Just to confuse you more, Nvidia will be renaming their GPUs again. The old G92 and G94 GPUs will be renamed just to make the average user think it's faster.

.....gtx 180...hmmmm
-
Also known as a rebranded 9800M GTX....
-
And on another note, the recent monster Quadro for desktops, the FX 5800:

Pretty much the GTX280, but with 4GB of RAM and approximately 7 times the price.
Final word? I want. -
Can anyone imagine how stupid their 10th generation names would sound if they kept the current convention?
Nvidia 1,000,000,000M GTX!!!!!!!!! Full power!!! -
-
Lol
The sad thing is that the average buyer is not up to par with this stuff and just like the OP said, it will make them think it's something faster and better when it's just a renaming or repackaging -
-
I think-it'll be the opposite, ( mean, what sounds faster? A 9000 or a 100? Stupid people (or people with common sense) will think 9000 > 100.
Sidenote Still getting used to my tablet, and my handwriting sucks. I'm amazed the comp can read it at all. -
i wonder how the people still with mx440 will think when they suddenly pass by a computer store and see that the current model numbers are below theirs?

unless this is some type of preperation for the GTX 280
-
Nvidia is sad. It's like the boy who cried wolf. Renaming might work the first or even the second time, but sooner or later, no one will trust your products. Next laptop I buy will have a Mobility Radeon 48xx.

They are renaming the desktop cards to... But if you look at the naming convention, somehow the Mobile parts have higher numbers than their desktop counterparts in most cases???
Core --- Desktop Part --- Mobile Part
G92 = GTS150 = GTX180M , GTX170M
G94 = GT130 = GTS160M
G96 = GT120 = GT130M, G110M
G98 = G100 = G105M
So can Nvidia Explain how thier numbering works? Cause I always thought higher number = more power, not the other way around.
Why is it that Nvidia finds it so hard to do something that a 5th grader could pull off ? -
I already have a chart of the new renames.... lemme see if I can find it and post it.
E.G. GTX 180M = 9800M GTX -

It's sad to see Nvidia doing this again; they did the same thing with the 9-series, which was nothing new. I don't like the way Nvidia has marketed itself lately - very cheap marketing tactics to spur sales. -
The unfortunate part of all this is that the average geek at geeksquad and the average apple genius will think that the renamed part is faster. -
Hey you could easily fit the gtx280m into one of these:
-
-
Hopefully it would just be the same core, but with more SPs and maybe faster memory.
-
here are the Geforce 9M videocards and their possible renames:
Code designation Suffix GPU current name new name NB9E GTX G92 GeForce 9800M GTX GeForce GTX 180M GT G92 GeForce 9800M GT GeForce GTX 170M GT G94 GeForce 9800M GTS GeForce GTS 160M GT G94 GeForce 9800M GS GeForce GTS 150M* GS G94 GeForce 9700M GTS GeForce GTS 140M* GE G96 GeForce 9700M GT GeForce GT 135M* GE G96 GeForce 9700M GS GeForce GT 135M* NB9P GT G96 GeForce 9650M GT GeForce GT 130M GS G96 GeForce 9600M GT GeForce GT 130M* GE2 G96 GeForce 9600M GS GeForce GT 130M* GV G96 GeForce 9500M G GeForce GT 130M* NB9M GS G98 GeForce 9400M G GeForce G 115M GS G98 GeForce 9300M GS GeForce G 105M GE G98 GeForce 9200M GS GeForce G 100M* Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
Cmon ATI, release that 4870 and maybe nVidia will stop playing these stupid games.
-
This new scheme kills all of the confusion of the 8k-9k generation, thus I have absolutely no problem with Nvidia's streamlining of the preexisting mess. Why did the company do this? Because 9800 leads to a naming dead-end, so the next generation of mobile cards has to be the 200M; why not go on and fix the existing cluster of confusion, while preparing for the new cards?
Standardization is always good, yet some are acting like the company released a press release touting the release of a slew of new mobile cards. -

The new names confuse me.
-
They're meant to be confusing.
Instead of using the names of the desktop gpu's equivalents (performance wise) with 'M' in the end they go and muck up everything even more.
No innovations (at least as far as we know) ... just renaming.
Great.
I'm very interested in seeing ATI's 4xxx mobile chips. -
How? From 100 to 180 with 100 being least powerful and 180 being the most. Seems pretty simple.
-
yet another move to fool the public, like renaming something make it faster. sounds faster though lol
-
-
The issue is in the fact they cannot make up their minds about keeping a specific name for a longer time, not to mention that they are doing simple renaming of the cards and nothing else. -
Indeed - I thought I was getting an actual 9-Series GPU in my 6920G.
Nope. The 9500M GS is just an 8600M GT in sheep's clothing.
Ditto for the 9650M GS and the 8700M GT.
And now they're doing it for the whole 9-series line? Greeeeat.
Wonder how all those people who own 9600M GTs are going to enjoy being considered G 110Ms. From mid-range to bottom of the heap. -
Like others have said, the issue is not with naming a new product line, it's that they're renaming the exact same products for the 2nd time.
-
Now one of those recent ATI 2xxx or 3xxx cards that work on the AGP port - that would be a worthy upgrade for a MX440. But I'll be sticking with the MX440 as a desktop GPU and leave the heavy gaming on my laptop.
Maybe with the slew of low-end models (by the new scheme at least) they'll also discontinue a couple - that'd be a nice help in making it a bit easier to keep track of their video cards.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015
