Yeah, it's the drivers. Try using driver sweeper or something to make sure there is nothing left of the old driver.

Uninstall all ur old display drivers.
reboot and go safe mode and use drive sweeper
Reboot into windows and get the official 186.81 drivers... they run cool and u should have no problem OCing..
get NVDIA system tools 6.05... i had some weird problems with it not working so i use 6.03... get 6.03 on the safe side..
On AC power , then set ur clocks... should have no problem...

You can ignore that post, its not possible and hasn't been for years now. Nvidia learned their lesson on that.

and exactly two post down ..........Not sure what your trying to get out of this, as I already said this was taken care of years ago, by nvidia soldering off the unused or dead cores that result in a lower end gpu.

A lucky bios flash from another gpu that doesn't brick the gpu being flashed does not mean the performance is increased. gpu-z reads the bios of the card the only things that are usually always 100% right are the clock ratings and bandwidth. Hence why when new gpu's come out gpu-z can only read the clock settings and bandwidth and everything else is usually blank till a update is released.

To OP: don't even try what he is suggesting, best case scenario is you get no improvement at all and a new name for your gpu. Worst case scenario you turn your laptop into a fancy paperweight.

lol what bios flash?? you change the device id in rivatuner and then change a few bits. worst case scenario is you'll have to reboot in safe mode and uninstall rivatuner/do a system restore

i had an hpdv9740us with a 8600gs and bluray. it was difficult finding an unlocked driver that you could overclock and could play BD's with.
the one i ended up using was a dox 169.xx driver. i think if you look around the net that series is still the best for o/cing the 8xxx series midrange cards and you get BD playback too.
forget the newer drivers as they are not really made for your card.

    unfortunately i dont.
but i do think its a dox169.09 good o/c, good temps, goo bd/dvd playbacki used to play medieval total war 2 and batman arkham asylum with that driver on my 8600gs, that was slightly overclocked
dox has his own stickied thread in laptopvideo2go.
    youll find it there

be forwarned that the 8xxx nvidia mobile cards can burn themsleves out with o/cing.
be careful and do it slowly and watch those temps always

thats strange, cos i can use any official drivers with my bluray. i use 186.82 though cos its given me the best results consistantly. it overclocks in nvidia system tools too.
never been able to overclock in riva tuner.
