I'm about to buy the new toshiba Qosmio F55 and they have this card.
PCI-Express x16 graphics subsystem, featuring:
o
NVIDIA® GeForce® 9700M GTS, 512MB GDDR3 discrete graphics memory, plus up to 1791MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory using NVIDIA® TurboCache technology.
o
Total Available Graphics memory 2303MB (64-bit version)
My question:
I heard that the shared part will negatively affect the laptop, is that true?
If it is true is there a way to remove it or stop it?
Anyway i think the 512 is more than enough, can't i just remove that part??
Sorry i 'm new to these things
-
I believe this card is 256bit, which it means it can utilize 512mb of VRam efficiently. As for "shared", it won't have negative effects, but it won't show positive effects either.
-
DOes the shared thing take from the RAMs?
-
It will "dynamically", meaning it won't rob RAM from you when it's needed, but it will "borrow" from it if the VRam is running dry. (Highly unlikely)
You are fine. -
i never seen that actually happen, but if it would where else can it take it from ?
-
Thanks a lot for your fast answers
-
"Turbocache" will dynamically borrow memory from physical RAM when needed. Like Royk said, it is very rare it is needed, especially in higher-end cards. Now, 64bit 64mb cards will effectively use Turbocache, as 64mb is a little low these days.

how much is the toshiba qosmio?
-
I think 9700m GTS is actually 128bit, not sure tho.
-
There are two configurations:
first is $1399.99
http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/F50/F55-Q502
The other is $1749.99:

I thought the 9700m GT was 256bit? Wouldn't that make the GTS 256bit?
-
not bad price points at all..... that x305 qosmio is so gaudy in that red IMO but its not a bad deal
-
The 9700m gts is 256 bit.
-
oh here we go:
-
Jeez I'm sick of this Nvidia thing. I thought the 9600m GT was the highest 128bit.
This 9 series is extremely annoying... -
I would go with the cheaper model also, I don't see 449$ worth of upgrades.
-
The NVIDIA® GeForce® 9700M GTS is 256 bit
http://www.guru3d.com/news/nvidia-intros-geforce-9700m-9800m-video/ -
The GTS has a 256 bit bus and 48 stream cpu's. Depending on what clocks it has it will be somewhat less powerfull than the 8800m GTS.
This is actually a new card.. Well done Nvidia
-
Is it an irony or sth?
Does it mean it is not a good card?
Sorry i don't know much about graphics cards
-
Em.... What?
If you are asking, and not making fun of me
, then yes it is a very good card! It should play any new game for 2-3 years
-
loool no....i thought you are making fun of the card
as i said i don't know much about them
I was confused when you said less powerful -

According to this report the 9700M GTS is 256-bit and has 48 shaders versus the usual 32 found in most mid-range Nvidia cards.
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8585&Itemid=1
That article also shows the 9700M gt as being 256-bit which would make sense considering Nvidia has so-far labeled it as an enthusiast card. But looking at its theoretical bandwidth it appears 128-bit though...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_m_series.html -
GTS is a 256bits G94 with 48SPs
EDIT: Woops didn't see second page. 9700M GT is a 128bit G96, but with a high core/shader clock. It probably has a "dual rank" 128bit bus like the 8700M GT. There's still a possibility that it comes with GDDR3 2400 so it would have almost as much bandwidth as the other 256bits mobile cards but I doubt that kind of clock is possible on a laptop -
Toshiba Qosmios are known to be overpriced monsters. Moreover although they are 17 inch models, they don't give you a full sized keyboard which is really sad. My first experience with a Toshiba satellite ended in disaster. Their service was simply horrible. I wonder if they have changed now.
-
This one is 15.4" and it's price is very low compared to others like xps m1530 $3100 (without the discount) with lower configurations......That's really strange. This is the only reason i'm still hesitant
-
I'd wait for an official review before jumping the gun, honestly, where do these companies come up with these prices?:twitcy:
-
ummm... that f55 in linked here:
http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/F50/F55-Q503
has a 9700m gts...
but the screen is only a 1440x900 -
Can order the bestbuy version now. If this laptop goes on sale, I will definitely be looking further into purchasing one.

I have Gateway P6860FX stock, but also purchased the Toshiba F55 becauase I'll be going back to school and gateway 10 pounds is impossible to lug around... but I have concern on the heat and noise, so toshiba is just in box sitting in my room.. not sure to open it or not yet..
-
I don't know about their qosimo line, but my satellite x205 has lasted a year and is still going strong as one of my favorite laptops that has passed through this IT department.
Compared to the Sony I had before and the many Dells which pass through here I am not one bit sorry I went with this Toshiba.
To be fair, I haven't had to have anything replaced or fixed and the only support I have required is driver support which has been adequate with everything else but GPU updates. (Dell and Sony were the same or worse)
I would definitely purchase Toshiba again at least for now and the F55 (15") and the x305 (17") models are definitely interesting. -
How does the 9700m GTS compare to the previous generation 8800m GTS? Notebookcheck says the 9700m is better, but then again, it's notebookcheck...
-
Should be a bit worse, with it's lack of Unified Shaders. Though, it is a 256bit card, which is nice.
-
But then again they may be equal because it's not the same chip. 9700M GT has same specs as 8700M GT but still is better.
-
Still can't imagine it having 16 less US's and being as powerful.
Must be a super chip. -
9600GT has 32 less than the GTS 640
-
Hmm... we'll see, I guess.
Never know, you may be right. -
I'll just point out that the 9700M GTS benchmark on notebookcheck was coupled with a Q6600 DTR.
They have the 9800M GTS outperforming the 8800M GTX, which I don't see happening at all, considering the 9800M GT performs at the same level with 32 more SP's.
And besides, we have the X305 benches on 1280 x 800 for the 9700M GTS. It doesn't look like it's outperforming the 8800M GTS. Very close though.

For comparison, the stock FX tends to score around 7600-7800 with a 1.83 Ghz C2D, compared to the P7350, a 2.0 Montevina C2D. -
Is the P7350 likely to be a bottleneck for the 9700m GTS?
-
The 9800m gts is one of the few 9 series graphics cards that outpaces its 8 series counterpart. In the 9800m gts case, they have increased the core and shader clocks. The 8800m gts was about 10-20% behind the 8800m gtx, so pushing the clocks higher might have made up the gap. Still we probably wont find out till gateway releases the refresh, since sager decided they want everyone to buy the most expensive card in the np8660.
-
Yep, I would see it as nearing the gap with the 8800M GTX/9800M GT, but not better though, which appears to be how notebookcheck is showing it.
As this would mean that the 9800M GTS would also outperform the 9800M GT, which I don't think is likely. -
Yah, I'm sure its not as good as 8800m gtx, but it should at least beat the old 8800m gts.
-
Oh yea, definitely. Thing is, I don't see the 9700M GTS beating the 8800M GTS either, it'll be close, but probably 10-20%. Much like the 8800M GTS/8800M GTX.
-
could someone post the result of 3dmark 06 of the f55 here?
-
Well, I posted the X305 scores. The lower end X305 scores should be similar to the lower end model of the F55 as they share the same CPU/GPU.
In case you missed it.

thnx for the quick reply - seems like the 9700m gts rocks ;D
did u already fill up the second hdd slot? if so, was it possible to get them to work in a raid-0 array? -
Note. I'll just point out that I didn't actually post them. I just linked them from the original post in an earlier post of mine in this thread.
Note that it's run in 1280 x 800, which isn't standard resolution. It also seems substantially higher than the other poster who posted results with the same machine. The other user got a 7334, I suspect that might be on 1280 x 854, but the other user hasn't responded yet. Nonethless, a 1000 points in 3dmark06 difference is rather odd.
From the original X305 thread, it was mentioned that you needed to purchase an extra caddy for the second HDD. -
Is it really? link please? I've been seeing 256-bit all over...

try reading more than just the first page....already been resolved.

Interesting this kind of shows or seems to tell me that the new 9700M GTS is about the same or a little better than my 8800M GTS in my Gateway P-6860FX. Comparing the 3DMark2006 scores my Gateway scored 8965 but that was with an Intel X9000 Extreme CPU running at 3.0Ghz, where as the Toshiba X305 is using the stock P7350 @ 2.0Ghz. As we all know CPU does help a little on the overall 3DMark2006 score. I compared the average FPS of both the X305 and my P-6860FX and they are basically even, actually the X305 slightly beats my P-6860FX by .5 or 1 FPS. With a stronger processor, I believe the X305 would gain probably 3-4 FPS. What you have now with the X305 is the power of the Gateway P-6860FX in a smaller 15.4" package
. Anyways just my oberservation. God Bless
-
Yeah sorry bout that I was at work so i couldn't check my information. But yeah i ran my 3dMark06 1280 X 800 which is what it defaulted to
