I know this is in the notebook thread but I heard from a computer website in Aus that Nvidia were stopping production on all there high end graphics cards so this would maybe include GTX280M and GTX260M as well ??
I will be getting a new laptop to replace my aging XPS1530. I was interested in laptops with the GTX280M bit with the information about Nvidias high end cards should I think about the mobile 5870 instead ??

    Cheers

Your source please? I doubt Nvidia will stop production in the near term since they have no decent alternatives to the cards you mentioned for the high-end market. Others might be better placed to confirm your assertion though.

First and foremost you should be thinking about getting the Mob. HD5870 because it's the better card.

Talk was that the high-end 55nm desktop cards were going to be canceled back in October 2009 due to a scarcity of GPU supply...and also because people were still hoping to see Fermi by the end of 2009. ;þ

Honestly though mobile GTX260M, 280M, and 285M will likely be EOLed by the end of 2010, but that really has nothing to do with the high-end desktop cards...since mobile versions aren't based on those GPUs anyway....instead they'll be EOLed because those mobile cards are old as dirt 55nm 9800 tech that can't be pushed any further.

It's true and it's old news. GTX 200 cards have been out of stock for a while now on newegg. Sources as mentioned here:

But of course the mobile cards are based on the G92 cores so they may still have a decent supply of those until they think of something to replace the 260m/280m/285m. In addition, they could just be reserving G200 cores to be used in the next gen mobile cards which possibly may be the GTX300M cards and hence the shortage of desktop GTX200 cards. Nvidia certainly did not expect Fermi to take this long to be rolled out due to terrible TSMC yields and so they're basically running out of supply.

Uh huh. In other news, I got my GTX285 from newegg just yesterday, and had been looking at them for quite some time before pulling the trigger, with every one I had looked at being "in stock". Source

EDIT: *Waits to be grilled for not getting a HD58xx*

All right then sounds like still some mobile versions out there of Nividia cards , I was also going to buy a new desktop in the future as well , and it is hard to source GTX295 cards anywhere. ATI5980 HD is out now for a 1004 dollars at one Aus site and that card is now faster any way.

I will get the Asus G73 A2 when more comes into Aus , they are selling like hotcakes at the moment and stock seems to be limited . Sounds like the 5870 is at least on a par with the 285M depending on which forums you read and its a whole lot cheaper. Dell is only stocking the m17x in Aus with 4870 which is bloody criminal other wise I would get the m17x instead of the Asus, although I might wait a while to see what Dell does in the next couple of months.

If they are going to stop making them, what are they replacing them with?

You may want to consider this Clevo, which is already available in AUS: W860CU.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I have a voodoo3 3000 if you want. Only £140, like new! It may not be the newest card around but you don't seem to mind :p

Let's forget that the 5800 series is much better, why the heck did you not wait 2 weeks for fermi if you are an nvidia fanboi?

Eh, color me un-impressed with Fermi. I frankly like the NVIDIA drivers and the single GTX285 is plenty enough to do whatever I might want to do with it for QUITE some time. ROTF @ the VooDoo3!

Yeah Fermi sounds interesting , but the Asus with the mobile HD5870 is just too good a price. And it sounds like it could be a while before Nvidia mobile versions of the GTX470-480 will be availible after the desktop equivalents are released at the end of this month

Well I have a 5830. Why did I go for a 5830 rather than a 5850? Because I got a good price on it lol.

    Stock clocks are 800/1000.

However they fitted it with 1250mhz rated ram.

All in all it reaches 1000/1400. At that level its competing with a stock 5870.

The 470 will use the same power, cost the same but score 30% more than your 285... ouch.
