Okay, so I never OC'd any PC before since I never had a PC that was capable of OC'ing
I just moved up from a 7400 128MB GPU
to 8400 GS 64MB (as i've heard)
confuses me as to why Sony would upgrade their GPU range but downgrade the video ram but anyways i was hoping to make OC my GPU just a little bit nothing too too serious that would cause heat problems or worse any kind of failures or crashes, just a tiny boost. since this will be my 1st time I was hoping to get some help from someone on how do I overclock with nVidia tools and how much should i OC and Pro's/con's and all that good stuff. Cheers!![]()

well the best tool for ocing is rivatuner and you can find many guides for ocing on net.just search it.
btw it is a weak card and you wont gain much by oc.so my advice is to stay away from it. -

It's also a deffective card, it's an 8400 dude, it's not going to be much of a performer in the first place. If it was the GT with GDDR3 memory, then maybe you could attain a bit of performance out of it, however the 8 series, well, to be honest isn't much of a gaming contender anymore, as the minimum specification will very soon be 8800's, not that you can't run those games on lower spec cards. My 570M runs GTA 4 on the same settings as my friends laptop 8800 and it's not OCed, all stock and basically the GDDR3 8600M GT, doesn't get 30-40 FPS, maybe 20-30, but i honestly don't mind that kind of FPS so long as it's not stuttering and relatively smooth.

Yeah, i'm not gonna rant about the deffect but it pisses me off how they were all excellent cards apart from that one stupid problem that renders the laptops that do have them a liability.

I do not recommend 3rd Party OCing Software for Nvidia GPU.
Just use the Official Software that Nvidia provided. It's called Nvidia System Tools(bundled with nTune). Google about it and download it.
However, TS, you GPU is not a suitable cake for OCing.
It's "defective" as mentioned above. Precisely, it's "easy to spoil" even without OCing at all. I can't imagine to OC it. There's a lot of users experienced it and it's a known issue.
Yet, there's exceptional. Minority(extremely little) of this GPU(Geforce 8400M GS) is safe and can be OCed.
Conclusion, it's not recommended to OC your GPU. Moreover, you're a newbie. Don't bother test it. -
like what they said. it not a pwerful card so if you o/c it minimally you will hardly see any difference. it is also a defective card, so if you o/c it a little further you risk frying it.
just enjoy it for what it is. -
okay thanks for the replies, the thing is with my 7400 GPU i was ab le to get around 30-48 FPS in NFS most wanted and carbon i was hoping for ATLEAST THE SAME RESULTS WITH the 8400 GS, i dont want to bother installing the whole game and find out that i cant even play them smoothly.anyone else know any good games that are playable with this GPU with over 25+ FPS?

) i played batman AA a little bit but on min i got 24fps average.... its up to you what u get. a good bet if you don't already have it (i dont know anyone who doesnt tbh) is counterstrike source, lots of people still play that. i can play that on my awful GPU all high with 8x filtering and some AA at like 40fps
win for the 6 year old games -

guess you will know more about it then !

Nonsense I was able to OC my Vostro 1500 no problem and played Mw2,BF2/2142,NFS and many others. I only OC'ed for short periods of times(1-2hrs) in a cool room. Of course the fan started but then it went quiet again. I think my clocks were 550/500/1100

OP, your 8400m GS should not perform below your Go 7400, regardless of overclocking. Just make sure you update to a stable graphics driver from laptopvideo2go.com.

Thank You for all the replies guys, so to answer Questions my card is soldered in to my MB, and on my last PC i updated to a driver from laptop2go and i kept getting an error message at startup saying nvcpl.dll or something error, didnt do anything was able to click okay and move on but got a bit annoying and worst part is i forgot how to update drivers from laptop to go
cuz Im not sure if you guys know but Sony really sucks in its Drivers section, you have to use their specific drivers and whatnot, anyways i donwnloaded the modded INF and the driver from laptop2go, what do i do next?
oh and one more question......before I install nvidia tools is there anything else i can do in the program other than OC? other display options or stuff like that please let me know so im not installing stuff i dont need
Thanks Guys -
1.Uninstall vid driver via device manager
2.Reboot then hold F8.Goto safe mode
3.Open driver sweeper and choose the nvidia option
4.reboot to safe again. Open device manager
5.Do install from disk, search for the modded inf
6.install then reboot
7.install sys tools 6.05
8.DL direct X redist from microsoft
9.You should look for other drivers while on LV2go, like mouse, sound, etc -

after all this talk of the defective card, im gonna stay away from OC atm
ill just stick to what i have, so how about half life 2 or left for dead? im getting counter strike right now so ill install it tomorrow and see how it goes, along with all my games,
One question,I remember when nVidia came out publicly and said that they are aware of their cards being faulty wasnt it that alot of companies were giving an extended warranty for the laptops with those cards if the card went dead or something?
OC nVidia 8400 GS(My 1st time help needed)
