    OC'd 740QM vs 2370QM in dual core mode ? (Dolphin/PCSX2 on Asus G73)

I'm a bit of a newb on this, which is why I'm asking here! :)

I'm trying to determine which CPU will give the best results with the Dolphin Emulator, which is very CPU intensive and limited to 2 cores. As well as for 2 core PC games, such as Witcher 2. In this game, the CPU is a bottleneck with the GTX460M.

Anyway, I've compared the Cinebench R10: Rendering Single CPUs 64Bit data from the 2370QM against the older 740QM.

    740QM: 3878.1 avg
    2670QM: 4899.2 avg

    These are stock speeds.

The 2670QM is quite higher, but it can not be OC'd due to it being a mobile sandy bridge. However, I can OC (with Setfsb) the 740QM, while disabling 2 of its 4 cores, allowing a stable OC up to around 3.3ghz. (Since by disabling 2 of its cores, the CPU temp drops a lot in the G73)

Is there anything I'm overlooking? If I'm correct, it would seem the OC'd 740QM in dual core mode would outperform the 2670QM on PC games which only use 2 cores and for the Dolphin emulator as well.

    Thanks for any replies.

    Sorry to dissapoint you but even my Intel Core i7 2720QM can keep up with Dolphin. D;
Dolphin can use up to 3 cores, splitting them up between cpu, gpu & sound.

Think i gotta invest in a i7 2920XM or something for sweet high resolution Wii gaming.

I think you meant to say "can't", right?

I looked at the speed, It says "i7 2720QM - 2.2 GHz Stock (3.0 GHz w/TB" in a PCSX2 test. So you're getting about 3Ghz peaked in the Dolphin. My desktop i7 920 OC'd to a stable 3.2ghz runs everything on Dolphin in 720p res minimum to 1080p on some. Doesn't it seem likely a 740QM at a stable 3.3ghz would offer similar performance? (across 2 cores)

There was a guy posting here a while back stating that his 720QM choked in PCSX2, but once he OC'd it to stable 3.2ghz (2 cores) it plays everything at full speed. In my experience, the PCSX2 was more CPU intensive than the Dolphin. This is why I'm thinking a 740QM would be able to get up to 3.3Ghz in the G73, and perform very good with the Dolphin Emu.

On two cores, isn't the 2670QM at over slightly over 3Ghz anyway, do to Turbo Boost 2.0?

Thats what i was meaning to type. xD
    Thanks for finding the typo.

Games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Zelda: Skyward Sword (In combat) makes my CPU struggle.

No, In PCSX2 test the 2670QM runs at 2.8ghz with Turbo Boost for 2 cores.

The 740QM is stable maxed at 3.3ghz (overclocked) with 2 cores manually disabled. (turbo boost is turned off)

It would be nice to disable two cores on the 2670QM and OC it past the 740QM, but OC'ing is impossible on the mobile sandy bridge CPU's AFAIK.

I know a stock 740QM at only 1.7ghz across 4 cores can't match a 2670QM at 2.4ghz across 4 cores, but I'm referring to a different way to run the 740QM. Wouldn't it seem the overclocked 740QM @ 3.3ghz can outperform a stock 2670QM with turbo boost @ 2.8ghz? (for dual core limited games / programs such as Witcher 2 and Dolphin/PCSX2 Emu's)

Yeah, those 2 games are very demanding compared to something like Mario Kart Wii and New Super Mario Wii.

What kind of fps does it average out at for Super Mario Galaxy 2?

I'll have my hands on a G73JW again this weekend. I can OC the 740QM and disable 2 cores, and report back here how it performs. I played Super Mario Galaxy 2 on it at stock speed with all 4 cores enabled and it played badly at around 38fps - 44fps max. It needs at least 55fps to run smoothly, lol

Im at 40-50fps here but still lose background music after a while.
Not that im too excited to replay it, had a blast playing it on my Wii even if it was only 480p. xD

This is good news. What resolution setting can you play it at before it slows down? I'm fine playing it at x1.5 native res. I just find it looks pretty bad at native Wii res, so I'm hoping the 2670qm speed can at least play it at x1.5 native.

    Thanks!

To get a near perfect performance on dolphin i had to switch to 2760qm because it does 3,4ghz with it.
Even so, paired with a 485m, isnt enough for it, while pcsx2 in 99% of the cases goes beyond 60fps.
I can keep dolphin fullspeed only on my desktop which does 4,3ghz on turbo.
