i just scored 3376 on 3dmark06 with the 169.04 driver, default. however i want to OC it..what overclocking program should a newbie like me use?

what are the max settings i can OC it to without it being too dangerous for my system?

    i use a
    2.2 ghz core 2 duo 4mb cache
    2 gb ram
    8600m gt
    inspiron 1520

what are your OC settings? (and mark scores)

615/475 using ntune, pretty easy to use and gets integrated to the nvidia control panel once you have installed it.

Clock speeds will differ from person to person, but in most cases you should be able to get 590 with the clock and 470 with the memory. However for some the clock can reach above 610 where as the memory cant go above 475 without artifacts or crashing (applies to me as well), where as others cant reach 600 with their clocks but their memories can go higher.

A safe OC, if such a thing exists would be where your not artifacting, not crashing and your temperatures are not exceeding 90C under full load

    3dmark 06 score at default res of 1280 x 1024 is 4197 points

take into consideration the 8600M GT ddr3 will score much better even when not oc'ed, it gets about 3800 not oc'ed (Asus G1, C90 and Macbook Pro's are the ones with this card)

Riva Tuner will allow you to seperately clock your shaders you can usually get a little more performance by doing this.

    Uhm :D
My 8600M GT in my G1S not OCed gets to 90°C :(
And overclocked it gets like 95°C

    I know, tooooo hot
But i don't know how to reduce the temperature :(
The first thing i'm going to buy in december is a notebook cooler...

Dude, you have got a portable heater, I bet you will have a very nice winter this year...and of course the reduced electricity bill from not having to turn on the heater in the house.

im using rivatuner and following the guide provided at 3dguru, however we're using different video cards, what should my

    core clock
    link clock
    and memory clock look?

what values do 615/475 correspond to?

    should i 'link clocks" ?

also, in the tutorial, in his version of rivatuner, he can "test" the OC speeds, where can i do this?

Everyone else with a G1S gets the same temps, don't sweat it. Heck, mine even gets to 100 once in a while in certain games.

My G1s idles around 70 and hits up to the 90's on a Targus ChillMat. I have a feeling that these babies were just made hot.

Isn't it weird how the temp drops 10-15 degrees instantly, though? I mean, I know it will cool down once it is not under load from exiting a game, but honestly, I don't think that is possible to drop that much in a matter of SECONDS. I have the feeling the sensor isn't as accurate as it could be, but maybe it is.

I agree, rivatuner is much rich in options and allows for more customizing, however turns out using rivatuner to overclock was the cause of my games dropping down to 3 fps from 40 just after a few minutes.

Tried ntune and everything is perfect...so far

For me the core wont go above 500 without being unstable, the memory can go into 550ish tho.
