i've been waiting for this thread..!

it's also good cause FS2004 and FSX are good "benchmark" games for notebooks

i'll wait to see what other ppl have to say..

i also run FS2004 for the same reason (and i have FSX and a new IFL90)

Glad this thread got started. Just purchased a 1530 dell, and downloaded the demo for FSX. Want to get FSX but was not sure on how it would run on a 8600GT.

The demo seemed to run fairly smoothly with all settings set to High. Was not sure if this was because of the demo, or if FSX was not the resource hog it was rumored to be. Would love to get some input before buying FSX on the type of settings I could run with the XPS. On a side note, I just played a little bit on overclocking the 8600GT on 3dmark 06 and was able to get a 5400 with the core at 550 and the mem at 810.

good post, you have some good links there.... been messing around with flight sim since the DOS days, still remember when flight sim 4 came out and i couldn't wait to get a copy, good stuff.... It's always been my benchmark for when to upgrade, and have spent a fair bit of cash to keep all the latest versions running properly... loved every minute though, even back when I upgraded from 1 MB to 2MB of VRAM or added a math CO-Processor to my 386DX cpu to get better frames per second... Currently have FSX running great on my Toshiba X205, love it! Great piece of software, tried all the others (Xplane, etc) over the years, but none other have ever overly impressed me.

The final version actually runs a bit better than the demo, and the patches have only improved it, so if you are happy with the demo's performance, you should get very similar performance! Good stuff!

About FSX, the final version runs much better with SP1 installed as be77solo pointed out

Hey, just curious n0elia, you ever fly for real? I've actually got a 1961 Piper Colt, bought it last year, having a blast with it! In the process of an interior upgrade, and looking at a possible engine swap, bumping up to an O-320 150hp, versus my stock 108hp.... anyway, sorry off topic! but, love flight sim! Wish the sim catagory was more active as in the past!

FSX does run fairly smooth on the 8600m gt.. but remember it's also a processor hog and SP1 is most advantageous if you have a dual core.

default FSX is pretty much way better than default FS2004, but with my addons , fs2004 looks even better than fsx and performs silky smooth. but i do miss some features of FSX.. maybe i will install both. :)

fsx alone also takes up 15gigs on hd !

FS2004 with A LOT of addons including GIGS of scenery takes up 8gigs on my HD

add fs2004.com to that list! .. good forum topics

Yeah, CH has some great stuff, but if you want something that is cheap and VERY convenient, I use the Microsoft Xbox 360 controller most days.... I've got several Saitek programable joysticks and a CH Products yoke and rudder pedals, but when it's all said and done, it's hard to beat how easy it is to plug in the 360 controller and just fly, works great and is small versus the alternative! Has plenty of buttons and 2 sticks, plus the triggers are analog so are GREAT for rudder input! Perfect companion to a laptop and gives you full control!

No, I don't have a license, unfortunately :) Have you been flying for a long time?

Yeah I think FS9 with quality addons is better than FSX! Also, I have some serious blurry texture issue in FSX.

Wow, very good info, thanks everyone. My dad would take me flying when I was a kid in his cesna, so always loved the idea of being able to virtualy take off fly to a destination and land.

So are these addons also available for FSX? Are most of the add ons for additonal airports? I guess I should click on some of those links and learn a little bit more. Oh, is FSX available for electronic purchase and download or is it strictly available onlyfrom purchase and install from CD/DVD?

I think it's only available on DVD

Most of the FS9 addons work in FSX, so don't worry.
I suggest you start with Avsim <- TONS of freeware addons

There's about anything you want available for flight sim.... FSX is constantly growing, and getting better every day.... Flight sim 2004 has just been out longer, so has a ton of add ons already available.... Anything from new planes, scenary, airports, multiplayer mods, graphic upgrades, weather, sounds, about anything you could want, and my personal favorite addition to FSX.... MISSIONS!!! I love em, gives you specific tasks and interactions and problems or emergencies with full audio dialog and graphics, weather situations, just gives you much more stuff to do versus just flying around, which, don't get me wrong, I love, but having to dead stick a caravan onto an aircraft carrier when the turbine stops or navigating the alps in the clouds, or racing at RENO in modified p51's against 7 other planes, just great stuff!

slowly but surly more and more addons are coming out for FSX. not to mention patches and updates to FS2004 addons to make them compatible

a few really good ones recently came out including Ultimate Terrain X and Ground Environment X

be warned Flight Simming can get to be a bit pricey... but way cheaper than flying for real ;)

could someone please give me an idea of what kind of settings could you expect to get out of this game with a Q6700, 4 gigs ram and a single 8800gtx? I'm not sure if I want to get FSX or if I should stick with 2004... I am picky about fps but want the best visuals too.

With a Quad Core i think you should go for FSX, SP1 enables better use of multicores. You'll be able get a pleasant flight experience

OR you could get FS9 and crank everything up. Insane resolution, AA & AF and 100% AI traffic without fps drop :) Beware that FS9 does NOT take advantage of multi cores, but you could run FS on one core and windows/background apps/services on the other cores

go do a search in the forums at www.fs2004.com (also about FSX)

and search for vids on youtube... FSX, 8800gtx. i think you will be.. happy, with FSX on that sytem. though there have been issues with recent drivers.. you may have to install some older drivers for that card to get the most from FSX.

and in order to take advantage of your quad core you will need SP1. However STAY AWAY from SP2!!! it takes away performance!! and changes the lighting and makes panel lights look awful.

There is a mod to make fs9 run on multi cores.. i'm not sure what's involved but some people have been getting 150 FPS in fs2004 with it.

150 fps.... damn. I think I'm going to research both of these a little more when my sager finally arrives ( supposed to ship the end of december ). Unfortunately youtube is blocked and you have to have administrative status to install any media players on my work computer, so I can't check those links yet but I appreciate the advice here.

FS9 is NOT written for multi core, so you can't simply mod it to take advantage of dual cores :) You can however, as I said above, offload the "pressure" on a different core, thus "dedicating" one core to FS

Anyone got some good .cfg tweaks for FS9 or FSX?

I've done the standard tweaks that can be found on the flightsim forums, and gained more fps and less blurry texture. Do you know of any "secret" tweak :)?

There is no need to look for CFG tweaks for FSX since sp2 has just arrived, and basically all tweaks to the cfg will be of no real importance. Check it out, it also gives a nice preview to DX10. Even though it's a bit of a letdown :S

I'm sorry but that "tweak" is just pure crap. It doesn't work. He doesn't know how dual core works.
FS9 is NOT optimized for multicore system, period!
As I said, with dual core the best thing to do is letting FS run on one core, and other background apps on the other core

And I can get 150-200 fps as well if I'm not locking the fps to 30-40!

    here's another link

it DOES spread the workload over both processors...

i guess it depends on the system if you get more in game performance or not

fs9 will run great.. with enough room for addons also

FSX maybe so-so... try the demo. the actual game runs a bit better.. and a lot better with SP1

you can make fs9 look and perform better than FSX anyway.. though you won't get those fun missions.

Yay, a Flight Sim Thread! I play FSX all the time. My favorite plane has to be the RedBull one. Can anyone land a 747 on the runway straight? I can take off, fly, I can get to the runway, I can touch down on the runway but I always come in at an angle. :p
