    Hello,

Just got this laptop and when I run some games at full 4k maxed settings the cpu gets to 98C and GPU 82C. It's probably about a week old. This laptop is fairly new so it's hard finding heat samples on it. Anyone know if these temps are safe? I get no slowdowns and I do have it on a cooler.

98*C is definitely not good. I'd look into the issue

If i was you i would just send it back since you're within the 30 days return period because no new laptop should reach temps like that. I dont know if its the cheap design of the OMENs causing it or not but with those temps on the CPU you're very close at the shutdown range.

It's a replacement for my old broken laptop lol. I just ran heaven benchmark and it got up to 86C CPU & 76 on the GPU. That was off the cooler. Wanted to see if the cooler might have been doing anything. Replace or fix they're on the hook for it.

Also the GPU overclocked itself to 1911... Which seems pretty high for a notebook.

GPU clocks sound good. High 70s in temps is not entirely unacceptable for the performance. On the other hand, Pascal cards can maintain stock clocks at insanely low voltages, if you check out the voltage-frequency curve in Afterburner (ctrl+F, not sure if working on mobile cards). If you're willing to give up the 5-10% of performance from boost, you can manually lower the power or temperature target to keep the temperatures where you're comfortable with. (Again, not sure if working on mobile -_-)

You can try fixing maximum clock of i7 6700HQ at 3.0 GHz through Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and see if it helps. Intel CPUs are known to run hot. I would have suggested disabling the turbo boost feature of i7 6700HQ by limiting maximum processor state down to %99 but it may cause bottleneck. I am not sure though. Since you said you play at full 4k max settings the GPU is the most responsible on workload. You can try both and see if temps become okay and cause bottleneck or not.

repaste with grizzly + undervolt a little the cpu -75mV or -100mV will make temps okey..
    it's a thin laptop with a 100W class GPU :) that was expectable :)

The Omen's cooling capability leaves things to be desired. This is why I wouldn't even dare get one. The MSI GT62 and GT73 do the cooling a lot more efficiently.

Another option is to just sell it and use the money to buy a different laptop before the problem gets worse.

Like others said you could try undervolting the CPU and doing a repaste on the CPU and GPU

As pointed out in the HP section the OMENs are based off the Pavilions. Not only the build quality but the ports and design as well.

Theres no way it could handle a GTX 1070 which explains the temps

Properly undervolted Omen 17 1070 completely stock.

I can see why the CPU would go to 100c if @collegekid28 didn't do the undervolt homework.

@Mobius 1 are you sure you can't undervolt more? I run 4 core @ 3.5GHz with only 1.024V and that is because my disgusting CPU can't go below -50 mV. I know every CPU is different but 3.1 GHz should run more or less below 1V. In my case it is 0.91V.

I would say try to undervolt more.

Wow this thing really took off didn't it. Anyways I love HP laptops. The reason being is HP has always taken care of me when I had a problem. I buy a care pack and they fix any problem I throw at them. As for this laptop it was new with not a lot of info so thought I would ask before talking to HP. Some very good info here. I told HP about the over heating problem and because this laptop was a replacement for a 850M (gotta love that warranty) and I had to wait a month already they sent me something already built (not custom) which was the same laptop but with the 7700HQ (like a faster CPU will help this problem). It comes today, I will give it a quick test and if I can cook food on it again will proceed with some of the mods / fixes mentioned in this post. Thank you for answering a lot of my questions.

    1850 on what test?

this omen 17 on stock only does 1440~mhz on firestrike ultra loop hitting max power spec 115w

shorting the two R005 resistor using liquid metal on the motherboard doesn't help, seems like need to solder a wire on it

Because I paid for a laptop in 2012 and through warranties (the original & $99 extension) I have went from 650M, 850M (same gpu really), and Now 1070. All for a price I paid in 2012. As I said before I am hard on my laptops and they always replace them no questions asked. Yes I can buy from a different maker but I am hard on my laptops since I travel with them a lot. Sometimes it's my fault others they just fail. This is the first time I have had a true heat issue. I used the Heaven Benchmark to test the gpu. But all the games I played on it the gpu boosted fine also before I sent it back.

Meh, FWIW, I got a cheap $1100 Omen with the 1060 6GB, i7, G-Sync 75hz, etc. and it runs fine. No problems, temps fantastic. You can bash HP, but occasionally they deliver. In the Clevo/MSi/Asus camp, I was paying more for less.

Mobius 1 did you use coolsense with this laptop. I had a issue with "
System Temperature (90D)" error. It happens when I play Fifa 17 which isn't that demanding of a game. On top of that I had turned turbo boost off to combat the high temp problems I had at the start of this thread. Which works great and I can game at 1080 max settings with everything I play. I can't for the life of me figure out why it was shutting down with the cpu only going to 2.8. I tried to read a bit on coolsense but got nothing really. So I turned it off. I turned turbo boost back on just to see if I would get thermal throttling and I didn't. Cpu runs at 85C and a boost of 3.7xx. I don't get it... Anyone care to explain?

My external at home is a 27" G-Sync Predator that runs up to 144hz so never really needed to OC since 75hz on the go is pretty good.

I attempted 110 and it did not like it. So far (Haven't been able to test with any games yet) 105 is working. So that's a nice little bump! Though I may lower it to around 90 just to be safe.

Hey Mobius1. When removing components, did you need to worry about Electrostatic much? Did you wear a ESD wrist strap? Thanks. Was it easy to take off the heatsink and apply Paste and how much paste do you put on of the MX4 Arctic on the CPU and GPU? Great illustrations and it will be a help when try enhance the cooling of my HP Omen 17. Thanks

It's something that you shouldn't use in a performance computer.

I attach ESD band to my metal desk.

Kryonaut for winter climates. Below 15c average ambient.

Conductonaut on slightly warm to hot climates. Above 15c average ambient.

Try first Traditional paste and still you have issues go for LM because most OEM void warranty upon usage of LM on cpu and gpu.
