When I get the message that says I need to rest so I can level up, I go to rest and when I do the box comes up where I decide what I want to increase, well after I make my selections and click exit the entire game crashes. Any ideas on what's going on?

Using 163.44 driver for windows XP and I have the latest patch for Oblivion I don't have any of the expansions.

And I've been a member of this forum for about a year now and that was the fastest response I've ever seen!

are you playing on your laptop (vista) or an xp machine?

on my XP desktop, I used the 162.18 drivers and had very little problems (1gb ram, nvidia 7300LE)

laptop Vista Premium 163.69 drivers and 2gb ram with 8600M GT = perfect

my laptop currently has XP on it. Do you get mouse lag while playing Oblivion? It's the main reason I reverted back to XP now I get this problem. Lose Lose situation. Though I can now play in Ultra high settings with HDR in 1280x800 with 61fps inside and 30-40 fps outside.

Ultra high at 1280x800 with those fps? Dang, my G1s with the DDR3 8600 gets the same results (ultra high, minus tree canopy shadows, at 1280x800) but I'm running vista so maybe that's why.

Anyways, I always notice there's a 2-3 second period where it seems like my game has frozen after leveling up. Maybe it has something to do with the hard drive, have you tried defragmenting?

Yes tried defragmenting. XP has given me a huge boost in performance. Though I'm starting to get a little disappointed in my 8600M GT. I just tried to install NVN and come to find out it won't work with my vid card.

Have you had any other crashes so far, like going into or out of buildings? Do you have a lot of saves/quicksaves?

You could try the unofficial patch the modders made. Anyway you need to ask your question over at the official Elderscrolls.com forum, if you really want it answered.

I had the exact same problem when I leveled up for the first time... found a bed and slept, once timer was up, chose my attributes, and bam, game freezed and crashed...

The reason why the game crashed was probably because after you have slept for the first time, you are supposed to be visited by a Dark Brotherhood black hand (assume that you have murdered someone) trying to recruit you to join their guild. So, apparently this little script of having him appearing after you leveled up is too much for the system to handle...

darn it, now I forgot how I solved that problem, I believe I tried a different location to sleep... like in the wilderness, a camp bedroll, or a beggar's bedroll, anyways, good luck.

Alright, I'll try the a different sleep location. I got to playing Sacred last night though and now I'm sort of hooked on it lol.

That level-up hang has always seemed weird to me. It seems like it gets longer and longer the higher level I am. I think it might be more CPU related though as I never see the HD or DVD cycling during the level-up. I suppose I could try bringing up Taskman then check out the CPU usage history after I go through that dialog...
