Hey i just got oblivion the other day and recently started to play
I have no idea what im doing and am rather concerned with all the character creation options early on in the game
I am looking to play as a stealth magic user
OR
a magical tank
I'm not sure how to achieve this at all
and am looking for some help on race sign and class
any ideas?

A magical tank? Does that even exist? You're usually supposed to kick back when you're a magician, not run up and smack them
-
You could go Conjuration so u can be Magic user and summon a tank (like that alligator one from early game). Conjuration also levels up fast and easy.
-
not a magical tank but like a tank that can use SOME magic.
Whats a good build for a first character just trying to get used to the game? -
Oblivion is an amazing game. In order to fully enjoy the game, you just play; don't worry about stats and just play. Of course some people can't do that, like me.
I'm more of a person who plays the game in perfection, ya know?
If you want to learn about game/character optimizing, here is the best site to learn:

Sorry, but the FAQ about character creation is totally wrong.
If you want to be say, a Fighter/Mage good at blade, block, illusion, destruction, and conjuration then don't pick those 5 as major or minor skills! Pick something worthless like speechcraft.
That way, as you improve those 5 skills, you won't level up (as leveling is a bad thing in Oblivion--at least unmodded)
Basically, create a character and pick whatever shills you NEVER use as major and minor. That way, as you improve, you'll actually get a character that is better than the enemies.
Also, never pick things you use all the time (Athletics and Acrobatics come to mind) or again, you'll end up with a high level character that is too weak to complete quests.
All that said, Oblivion's a great game no matter how you play it. -
Oblivion is a great game, but its leveling/skill system is the worst in any RPG I have ever played in my entire life or has ever existed in any universe.
It is SO BAD! This game could have been SO MUCH BETTER, but the fun was absolutely annihilated if you at all understood how leveling worked.
I tried to play it for XBOX but got too obsessed with stat/level optimization and stopped playing it. This happened 4 times! The only time I will ever pick the game back up is if I can buy the PC version and mod out the leveling system. -

Personally the leveling system is good, just that comes from a very different approach than the traditional RPG's we are used to play. -
Be a NightShade...that's what my character is...a Stealth Assassin/Mage type character, specializes in stealth kills, but can also learn most of the magics...really good combination methinks..
-
I made an assasin theif woodelf
the bow and arrow is so overpowered when your sneaking its not even funny
makes it pretty easy but id rather get used to the enviroment and everything before i remake a character that will level the way i like
so far i went to the dungeon place right across from the sewers and cleared it i think
got some weird item
and i killed a few guards and stole some stuff from the imperial city for fun
and just joined the assasin's guild thing -
Grey Fox mask is my favorite thing in the game...
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
the gray cowl of nocturnal... makes me remember what HELL it is to get, lol! worth it though, 300 points of feather = yummy for looting dungeons
...

sigh... never mind the min-maxing to not level... play it the way it was intended.
Choose blade and armor skills and pick Restoration (healing)
Get as much mana as you can on character build, make sure you have some health and melee stats as well.
play paladin-like until you can complete the mage guild line... max out mana points, build a spell which takes your max mana and casts drain (restoration skill - seriously)
The result is a character that fights well, heals like a champ and packs a nasty magic drain from hell for a big gun.
Ooh look a big mob... I have full mana! woo!
cast one spell (mob is almost dead and you are at full)
swing once or twice... you win.
Did I mention this build is easy to play prior to the big gun as well?
(swing swing heal, swing swing collect loot) -
Glass houses, my friend. -
Honestly, some people seem to think anything outside of completely random character generation is min/maxing.
its like assuming any D&D rogue with a dex above 13 is min/maxed...
What I outlined above allows you to play the game intuitively and without a single cheat. What part of that is min/max or not playing as intended? -

Any ideas on where to go and what to do
im lvl 3 just have to sleep for lvl 4
exploring some random cave.. lol -
Do a few quests from the main line, and then branch off to do the fighter guild lines. Get a few "chop chop loot" quests down, and move on to the mage guild and then back to the main quest.
After you get about 30-40 fame/infamy points, just walk around towns and randomly speak/listen and they'll come to you for help. -
What about the darkbrotherhood i was about to do their first quest to join
Im a thief so of course im gonna go more for infamy i would assume
stealing stuff and killing guards its just so much more fun =] -
Hmmm...I kind of forgot about the Dark Brotherhood. You could do it, but you might want to look up mods that make the guards less "god like"...I really hated trying to sneak past them for anything and that they're always way too powerful in groups if you get in a confrontation.
-
Im playing on a 360 so mods are a no go
i have it set on easy
and im pretty good at sneaking sence its like my main thing
but well see how it goes -
Oblivion = fun. I was a Warrior who can heal - I would just run into enemies, kill them, retreat, heal, then jump back in
Some people like to make the game easy. I'm the other way around, that's why I love the leveling system. You never overpower your enemies, each one has a chance of killing you, which keeps you on your toes and makes you think twice before slaying guards! (Which is a ton of fun, btw) -
is there anyplace i can buy lockpicks?
i suck at the minigame or w.e u wanna call it and always run out =X -
Thieves Guild.

BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Oblivion is awesome, I branched off a bit, and did the Officiall Add-ons...
Although Im starting the shivering isles, and i accidentally killed many guards on Crucible...
then i quicksaved... it was awful... T_T...
and im doing the mages guild quests on cyrodill, already finished the thieves, fighters guilds, did the order of blood, the white stallion, knights of the nine... lots of thingies, but, theres still MUCH to do, i still have the Nirnroot quest from the beginning, and the Wine one from that lady in Weye -_- h8 it... -
Oodle-Bear Alienware Mug, Testpilot
I have not played Oblivion yet but have the Game of the year version ready to load onto my M17X, whever i get it.
Anyway, i have rad loads on character creation etc.
I have also aquired numerous mods, mostly aimed at making the game look better.
Has anyone used the QTP3, if so does it kill GPU's i have basically followed the Oblivion Texture Overhaul guide with all the high res tiles etc.

Heh... I loved being a rogue in Oblivion.
I picked up swords, bows, stealth and illusion. Used Chameleon and could sneak attack all day long. Once I got some of those uber items, I'd just shoot them with the bow, wait till they came close looking for me and backstab them with a magic sword.
so much fun :-D
Melee combat is much improved over morrowind, but I still find it a bit underpowered compared to rogue type builds and mage builds. -
Any DM in a tabletop RPG would also match the enemies for your party's (or your) power level.
The probelm was that you could stay lowbie and make things easy-mode.
The world should be tough to start with and get closer in power per unit as you rise in power and in THAT way, yes it was silly as it was just the opposite.
However, what I suggested kept the player power in line with the mobs by using a system built into the game. You chose an outside method to keep your character low so as to keep the game easy. I used gameplay inormation to mold a useful strategy within the system. You used inside information (that a player should never have) to mold the system to better suit you.
Its a single player game, and you can do whatever you like... but you cheapened the experience for yourself and suggested someone else do the same.
Maybe its just the DM in me talking...
if someone in my campaigns figured out (with their character) that a wizard was their next target and chose feats and skills which allowed them to better deal with a wizard, I'd be pretty happy with them.
if someone kept dying or using XP to try to keep the party low enough to make that high wizard lower so as not to have certain spells, they'd be in for a rude awakening. -
Oblivion's awesome lol, been playing Morrowind for ages and have just made the move to Oblivion....I'm an Argonian thief assasin type blokey.....I rule.....jumping from roof to roof and the like...lol.
