Could I request some actual fps benchmarks for Oblivion (say set to middle everything, HDR, no AA - just to standardise things) for the following two machines

    - Dell Vostro 1500 (with 8600gt)
    - Toshiba Satellite a210-11p (or any other machine with a hd2600 I guess)

Im trying to decide between the two and playing Oblivion is a major factor.

Please feel free to add any other game fps's too

(I read through that 8600gt vs hd 2600 thread but couldnt find any direct-ish comparisons)

    Thanks in advance

Ok, I have a Vostro 1500 (256MB nVIDIA 8600m GT) and I play Oblivion a lot. Specs used: resolution of 1280*800 with high textures, HDR, and between 25-50% factors as shadows, grass, objects and characters, no AA or v-sync. I can get a solid fps of 28-40 most of the time (obviously when loading a new scenario it will decrease, but only for 1 second). Commentary: this fps for me are very fluid for this game.

I hope this can help you.

I know there was another thread titled HD2600 Review that had some screens and fps for Oblivion. It probably a couple pages back. From what I saw/read it performed just as well as the 8600m GT

Just found this on another post. Comparing it to the 8600gt (subjective) results by 'lozanogo' Id say the 8600 gt looks better

Shame as I really want the Toshiba as I thionk it's a classier machine, but may have to go with the Dell if it runs better.

I just forgot to mention 1 point: I followed the tweak guides ( www.tweakguides.com) to modify the .ini file to take advantage of my duo processor (Core2Duo 2.0 GHz) and 2GB ram. Maybe this accounts for my constant rates even with grass.

    I hope this can help.

Lozanogo: Right. Diifficult to compare isnt it.

Ive found another contender though - the xps m1530 which is only marginally more expensive than the vostro with same specs except comes with 1.5GHZ though (the one in my budget anyway).

Is there much difference between this and a 1.8ghz turion.

If not Im probably going to go for it. I get something I know will run my games (8600gt) and looks the business too.

That was me :p . Since then I have updated the graphics drivers and tweaked the grass settings in the Oblivion.ini configuration file in the games folder in my documents. Tweakguides.com have a guide for it. It was mainly just the tall grass at the Gold Coast that was bringing the framerate below 15fps, normal grass wasn't much of problem (15-20fps at a guess). But now with the grass tweak and new drivers I don't think the framerate drops below 15fps anymore, and overall performance is very playable.

I have settled with Medium textures, HDR lighting, 50% draw distance on grass and trees, 40% shadows outside and 60% inside (at 1280 x 800 resolution).
