    Hi,

at first I considered a Dell Inspiron E1705 with a GeForce Go 7900 GS, but I realized that my gaming interest (especially for the PC) has been steadily declining for many years.

The only reason, really, that I wanted a gaming laptop at all was so I could play Oblivion on it with reasonable settings. And back when I posted on the "What Notebook Should I Buy?" section, a lot of people recommended the ASUS S96J, as the X1600 was the best GPU offered on the 15.4" size. So I thought hey, the portability might be nice (I don't need anything as small as the W3J, not to mention it comes with less RAM and is more expensive)

I've had a while to think it over, and especially now that the $750 off coupon for the E1705 is only for the 1.66 Ghz solo, I was wondering about Oblivion's performance on an S96J, or more specifically, an X1600. I'm thinking of getting an S96J with 2 gigs of RAM and a 5400 RPM HDD.

If you have similar settings and/or know exactly how it will perform, could you tell me what kind of settings I can expect to play it on? Resolution doesn't really matter much to me, I'd rather have full detail settings with a low resolution (I'm currently running it on a desktop with rock bottom settings and it lags like hell in some parts). Also I'd like to know how much framerate drops I can expect at certain settings.

I have about two months to buy a laptop, so I can wait a while.

Thanks guys so much! You've helped me so much already, and I'm confident you can help me now.

I would suggest bringing this thread to Asus section as well as it not only relates to X1600 (gaming and graphics card), but also S96J (Asus) where people might post some more comments.

I ordered mine last week and still waiting, but from what I was reading S96J should play this game with mid/max setting. This is the game that I will be playing first when i get my laptop

The S96J will run Oblivion great! The X1600 is a very powerfull GPU, I heard people running Oblivion at 1680*1050 (low settings tough) and it looked great they said.

I would only consider a Dell E1705 if you are a real gamer, not if you are a occasionally gamer. The Dell is big, heavy and not so good-looking as the Asus. The quality of Asus is also better then the Dell.

If you keep your resolution more modest, you should be able to play it with high textures, x2 or x4 AA, with pretty high fades, and distant lands on and still mantain about 30-35 fps minimum.

What resolution would be ideal for this game is I were to play it with all bells abd whistles maxed. Also - what is the difference in resolution for the game - better details? If so, I thought that max settings provide that for you?

    please advice

    thanks

    640x480 or 800x600.

You can better play at native resolution, or else the screen looks blurry or you get bars at the ends... I prefer a better resolution with lower quality then 800*600 with everything highest... but thats my opinion :)

Oblivion works great for me on my S96J. All highest settings on native res except for AA. Oh yeah, I turned the grass distance to a minimum. That kills FPS outdoors. It looks amazing and runs smoothly otherwise.

So do people think getting anything better would be overkill if I won't be playing many games in the future other than Oblivion?

    Many thanks!!
