I'm going to be buying Oblivion for my Inspiron 1420, and I would like to know whether or not my laptop will be able to support the game, and on what level.
My laptop specs are in my signature.
    Thanks!

Will depend on resolution. Medium on 800x600 is my guess for nicely playable, might be able to add AA/HDR.
    Is it a 8400M G or GS?

I have an 8600M GT my card is a little better than yours. I can play the game on Ultra High settings/1280x800 res/HDR lighting/Vsync and I keep a constant fps of 30+ bear in mind I am using Windows XP which has greatly increased my performance.

When you get the game I strongly suggest you update to the latest patch, get the 163.44 drivers or newer for your card. Go to tweakguide and use the Oblivion tweak guide to optimize Oblivion. Also a change that's not mentioned in the tweakguide in your Oblivion.ini change iFPSClamp=0 to iFPSClamp=60 (or 50 or 40 or 30) which ever works best for you. I'm currently using 40. This will cap your FPS so there are no drastic jumps and falls in FPS.

Basically I'm saying if I can play the game on the highest settings it has to offer then you should be fine. Goodluck and I hope you enjoy it, it's an amazing game.

It's an 8400M GS. Is that better?

Oh, and will my 1.8 ghz dual-core processor be able to play Oblivion as well?

I would think it should be enough. If you really want to know go here:

www.systemrequirementslab.com select Oblivion and it will see if your system meets the minimum requirements.

That site tells me that everything but the video card will run the game. It says that I only have 117mb of dedicated memory. What's with that?

That's odd... It usually shows over what you have. I'll leave this one to someone who knows more about it. I'm still pretty sure you can play the game on medium-low settings with a decent FPS.

Your card will borrow memory from your RAM so you will have enough, btw there is a thread for this.

See, I really like that site, but the problem is it tests the computer you're running, not the computer you're potentially buying.
