Well I got a notification that my Oculus Rift will be shipping "soon".
I'm trying to weigh pros and cons whether to cancel or not. My main PC which is hefty enough to run VR, is in my bedroom, so having full movement like with HTC Vive is not going to happen. I don't need all those cables sitting around to trip on every time I (or my kids) go into my closets. Plus there's really no place to move around, so it'd be primarily stationary entertainment.
I'm not a huge fan of Oculus's approach on title support though and it is Facebook now which I also have a hard time supporting. Not to mention I will probably need two eventually because my kids will overtake this.![]()
Also with narrow FOV on a regular monitor it can give me motion sickness. So I'm afraid I might get a similar experience with the Rift or any VR headset.
I don't know anyone near me that has one so don't have the opportunity to try it out, so find that this will be my trial and can resell it if it doesn't work out so well.
Just asking opinions on this matter.
Thanks!

New HTC Vive orders are now shipping within 72h...you will want one just for the controller. VR with just a joypad makes little difference to having no VR at all.
Vive works perfectly seated as well and has already 250 games/software/stuff on Steam.
You don't want your purchases to be locked to the Oculus store and only their next HMD.Last edited: Jun 9, 2016 -
I think I may cancel anyhow because I'm just not ready or set up for any VR yet. Since my mom moved in with me, if I can convince her to get rid of some furniture, I have a room that would work perfectly for the VIVE. But then my gaming PC would be on the main floor instead of my bedroom, and I can't quite afford another high powered PC at the moment.
Ugh. VR is more of a pain in the butt than anything. It's an expensive endeavor too.
However, many of the Steam titles work with Oculus don't they? It's just that Oculus locks out other VR headsets like the Vive from playing Oculus exclusive titles, right? -
Whatever you can get on Steam works for both as long as the game supports it and you manually agree to the terms to lift the Rift inbuilt block to use apps from outside sources.
Whatever you get on the Oculus store only works on Facebook licensed devices.
For me it's Vive as I like to have the freedom of choice to do with the hardware that I purchase as I see fit.
You can 'unofficially' (not pirated) play Oculus shop stuff on Vive, but that's another topic....cough...revive...cough.
Edit: Move that furniture into the garage already!

+1 for ditching oculus rift and buying HTC Vive.
I heard they promised no DRM when promoting oculus but now they want their store only? pfff. -
+1 for the Vive. It's can do everything the Oculus can and more. Plus it's open. Screw Facebook for trying to lock things down and going to town data mining anything with a hole and a heartbeat.

Whats is this new vr hype? I just bought a 34inch curved monitor for immersion haha.
I get severe motion sickness so.. yeah.hmscott, HTWingNut, dahlia and 1 other person like this. -
I'm on the hype train too. And the Vive will soon finally be available for testing in a store close-by so I'll give it a try.
HT since you're on the fence maybe you should cancel and wait until you get the chance to test one first. -

Hopefully there will be a place to rent the Rift and Vive around here soon and that will make my choice easier. But $600-$800 is big chunk of change to risk.

if i made 30k a year or more id buy one.....kinda like debating if a car is worth it..

foodshelterclothing are one expense really and if you made 800 more a year it would likely be 65/month. if you can put it on a credit card i guess its worth it...i however have terrible credit

I love my CV1. Using my 980m spec MSI GT80s drives the rift in Assetto Corsa no worries. For the uninitiated you need to disable SLI as neither AC or Oculus support it. I get a message from the oculus software saying my laptop ISN'T up to spec but I have not had an issue. It is smooth and brilliantly executed. Hope this helps the undecided. A single 980m drives the rift fine in my experience.

I tried the HTC Vive two days ago, my first experience with any of the modern VR-solutions. It was really cool but at the same time I had hoped to be more blown away. A couple of factors contributed though:
- The small store where I did the testing blasted quite loud music in the background and it overrode the game audio. Particularly in Whale Encounter the immersion was broken.
- Since it was in a store in a mall there where lots of people passing by. During Job Simulator a kid right next to me kept screaming "PICK THAT UP!" and "THROW THAT AWAY!" Again, immersion broken.
- The store was small and their designated area was only about 1x1,5m. I could barely move or stretch out my hands before the virtual walls appeared. They probably calibrated it wrong too because trying to pick up things from the ground and I smashed the controllers in the floor before I could reach it. Also a physical concrete pillar was in the way of the power outlet in Job Simulator. Immersion.
- The guy helping me was a standin for the regular and didn´t know how to adjust stuff. In the end I arbitrarily adjusted only the pupil distance and hoped for the best. Not the best image at times but even with my glasses it was fairly comfortable.
- I only had a couple of minutes each on Whale Encounter, Job Simulator and Budget Cuts. Not much to go by.
-
I'm skipping VR. I'm not actually interested in an experience which completely blocks out everything around you. I'm waiting for augmented reality. I wear corrective lenses already - start making tech smaller and build it into my glasses!
-
Vive user here, this thing rocks! The cool part is that it is very intuitive even for people that rarely, or never, played video games. I took it to my work office too, and all my coworkers and boss had a blast playing games.
Right now there is very limited software so most users won't get much worth out of it, but it is definitely something else.
As said, it is important to have proper space and a good pair of headphones to really be immersed in the world. People yelling, worrying about bumping into stuff because it was not properly set, small play areas, pets, many things can hurt the experience if not properly set, but it's really not that hard to set either.
I can't recommend it right now due to the lack of staying software but I have high hopes for this tech. (I have many games but aside from puzzle/spooky/arcadey shooting, there is not much yet).
Also, we will really benefit with laptops using Pascal when it hits, provided we get near GTX 1070 level of performance. Since SLI is a no go right now, single GPU performance is a must. 980m is okay but I can definitely see games requiring way more performance soon, since we need constant synced 90fps after all.
Even with seated experiences, it's pretty fun to just be inside the game.Mr Najsman, TBoneSan, Prema and 2 others like this.
