Just received my new dv8000t a couple days ago and found some strange things with it. The main thing is, after doing a format and a clean-install of windows, I installed 84.25 drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. At default clocks, which are 450/380 out of the box, I get about a 3500 in 3dmark05.

I started playing with overclocking and set the clocks to the "suggested frequencies" that the driver calculated which were something like 479/440. I then ran 3dmark05 again and the framerates were half what they were at the lower frequency (I'm not sure of the score because I stopped the benchmark halfway through). How could that be?

    Thanks,

That is really strange.. You have a good notebook, at that clock it should easily get 4000. Why not try to run it the whole way?

Yeah I guess I should. I'm pretty dissapointed so far with this notebook. The seams on the left & right of the screen aren't tight enough so some light leaks out from the lamps behind the screen.. I'm not sure if I should send it in for that or not. My dv8280us which uses the same case doesn't have the problem at all. I just thought of the fact that I haven't set the power management to Always On yet and that might effect the frequency settings and cause it to clash with the overclock.. I'll have to try that now.

Well, setting the power preference to Always On didn't fix the problem. I ditched the drivers and am in the process of downloading the default HP drivers. Seems really strange that 3dmark performance would worsen with an overclock.

I think there may be an issue overclocking some of the newer 7x00 Nvidia cards . . someone reported the same problem you have the other day as well.

Make sure your graphics card is set to optimal performance. It looks like it is - 3500 is a good score for the Go7600, that is the normal range. If anything, I'd update the drivers and forget overclocking, see how it does then.

Thanks Chaz, I'll probobly take your advice, the card performs well at stock settings. I'll let you guys know if the default HP drivers make any difference.

Welp, I installed default HP driver and everything works great, except I can't seem to overclock. I've tried both Coolbits and RivaTuner and with both I can set the new frequencies but they always revert right back to default. Any idea how to keep this from happening? The memory on my board is underclocked and I just wanted to up it closer to the default it should be.

I know it isn't possible to overclock the Dell XPS M1710 without a BIOS flash - the frequencies are locked. I am not positive but it looks like the same problem could apply to you. Not sure if there's anything around that.
