Ok when I play gears of war or call of duty 4 on my laptop sometimes it will freeze then my screen will start to flicker for about 10 sec then it will go back to normal. This has happened about 3 times on each game. Why is it doing this? Thanks!

Sounds like the video card is crashing, try some new drivers.

Not a huge fan of installing drivers lol. Because I have no clue how to do it lol. But this is a very small problem I can live with it lol but this is why this is happening because my card is crashing?

Its easy to instal nvidia drivers:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626

A few times I had AOC flicker whenever I started it up, downloaded new drivers and it stopped. Even though it came back later on and then stopped on its own again lol. It could probably be a ton of things, but it doesn't hurt to try new drivers (especially if you have really old ones).

Is it predictable? Certain scene? Point in the game? After a certain amount of time?

All those could be indicative of a potential cause. Is it only these games because you only play them? The most demanding games?

I am going to go out on a limb here. What you describe to me does not necessarily indicate a problem. With both complex and a huge volume of tasks/calculations to not believe occasional errors/conflicts can/will happen and demonstrate as a stutter/hiccup is well I think unrealistic.

I have not done much gaming in years. But when I did I used to do a little this type of thing happened sometimes. Also remember even though you are just gaming the system is doing more. That gets back to the "conflict" I mentioned. Back then that is roughly how it was explained to me by some who were knowledgeable in computers. Very specifically that is one advantage dedicated gaming consoles have over "computers". Computers do many things gaming consoles do one. That is the dilemma?

I might be mistaken but believe I read of some of these issues in for example MaximumPC when I was much newer to computers.

I would pay attention to the symptoms you describe. Look for patterns. Even if you find a pattern that is not indicative of a hardware issue for certain. Increased symptoms could be.

Any gamers with more recent experience want to input? I could be wrong been a while. ;)

it happens at random times. I will be playing Mp in call of duty 4 and it will happen at random times. Maybe once every hour to 2 hours and the same with gears of war. I simply wont update my drivers cause i'm to scared in messing up my computer.

Its pretty safe to update drivers as long as you follow the steps in the guide. Worse case you roll back the drivers using windows or windows update.

Halo360Fan I am 99% certain my explanation is correct at this point. You don't have a hardware issue.

Is mullenbooger correct about drivers? Yes that could help. Is it likely too? I say doubtful but more research would be needed on my part to say either way with any kind of authority.

mullenbooger is correct installing new drivers is no big deal.

I update my drivers for fun. My brother who has training and diplomas does not do for fun. Two different approaches. If you don't want to do you have many experts on your side. Also remember their could be a glitch in the software? Unless the driver specifically addresses your issue in that case unlikely to resolve the issue.

Do what ever you are comfortable with.

Check that there's no programs set to run in the background and suddenly interfering your gaming. You might also try running the games with different resolutions, to see if you still get flickering. Some games may not run well with certain resolutions.

Since it doesn't happen in normal use, the display panel is propably fine? And since your temps are also fine I would too, like others, suspect software issue: propably driver, DirectX or game issue. Try updating them all. Game patches are found e.g. from particular game's official website. Latest DirectX update can be found here. And yes, most games still need DirectX9 components, even though you have DirectX10.

ok I tried the directx updates and it did not slove the problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled both games and it did not solve the problem. So my only option is to update my drivers. Can you tell me what drivers I need with instructions? I'm a paranoid person when it comes to my computer. Thanks!
