someone recommended an official thread since the game came out today.

what do u guys think?
did it live up to the hype?

i heard its offly short but the replayabiility is awesome (kind of like css).

if your looking to get a deal on this game, don't pay 50 dollars.. its 40 dollars right now at circuit city.

well it was basically made to be a multiplayer game from the start, right? the advertising and everything... no one's gonna buy it for the SP part i think

 

Just got mine copy from Gamestop for $39.99 because I pre-ordered the game. Cant wait to get home and enjoy ^_^

 

you paid that much for the PC version?? ......or is it because you put the $5 to $10 down.

 

I put 5 down and got additional extra -$5 offer so its $39 total.

 

What are the minimum specs for a decent framerate?

 

My first gripe with this game, mainly Steam - I downloaded the game overnight, and when I went to play it just now (said 100% ready), it has to update. That should have been done automatically.

 

but you'll be letting your friends down.

 

I'm dying to know if it will run as smooth as the HL2 eps and CSS do on my m1530! Apparently Valve is known for creating wonderfully optimized games.

How are the framerates?

 

if it runs smooth with my nvidia 7150m intergrated card it should run smooth on your system

I'd say that it's definately a game that is worth buying.

 

anyone else stuck on the hospital roof where you have to press the radio? it wont press, i mean first time when the pilot tells you to call him back works but after that you cant press it a second time

 

On the demo I was getting 30-40+ FPS at 1280x800 everything maxed with a 9500m GS so you should see similar performance. I heard that turning shaders to medium gives a huge boost so perhaps 1680x1050 would be playable with that option.

 

wait, I thought the demo was preload files....why am I now downloading more. My disc installer says it's ready to play....

You press it, then they give you about 30 seconds to set up, then press it again to start.

I've tried a passive 8600GT DDR2, NX8800GT OC, and my crossfire HD 4850 setups on this game(all desktop cards), and all in all it runs about equal to any of the other Orange box version of source games. Most of the time L4D runs better than HL2 ep 2. Using the flashlight in L4D also seems to have less of an FPS impact than EP2, which is nice because you'll probebly never turn it off in L4D. If you have an 8600GT, don't expect to run this game maxed out in 1920x1080, I only got about 22-30fps avg running like that, no AA, 16xAF. 1280x800 should be fine though. The 8800GT, and crossfire HD 4850's .... well max AA, AF, and all max settings possible in 1920x1080 still never dropped below 60fps on the 8800, and never dropped below 100fps on the pair of 4850's.

I just spawned as a Tank, directly behind the survivors. Awesome.


If you thought it was cool to fight a Tank, imagine BEING a Tank. LOL.

 

I got tank twice in a row actually. It must be given to whoever is leading at the time and I was leading in points that whole game. It's really fun but if you want to be effective don't go for killing, knock them all down first, then finish the job. I think the tanks in campaign on expert have more HP than when you're actually a tank in versus.

Overall it's crazy fun. And you know Steam will keep adding to the game like TF2. Definitely worth the cash. Even more so if you have 3-7 other friends that you can play with often.

 

Awesome, been hanging out for this one. Will have to check out EB when I get back!

BTW, L4D is available on the Circuit City site today for $39.99 + free shipping; when I checked yesterday, it wasn't available yet.

already got mine for 40 bucks ;p for some reason they "held" the game for a day and wouldnt sell it to anyone even though the box of them were sitting behind the counter..

 

Is valvE gonna open up the other campaigns to versus mode? That's the best part of the game and you only have two campaigns!

 

im sure there will be other maps released and content updates. this is valve we are talking about.

I am personally betting that they might even add a whole new campaign. Valve did loads of extra work for TF2 post-release and I'm sure they'll do the same here.

 

So when the game advertises 20 maps at the end of the demo, what does that mean? Is the demo considered 2 maps or 2 sections of 1 map?

My friend was lagging behind the troops so I pinned him down as hunter and killed him before anyone made it back.

is there a way to check the fps in-game?

 

Open console ( ~ Key), and type " cl_showfps 1 "

Typing " cl_showfps 0 " will turn it off.

 

Just bought it today after I cashed my work check. Was playing all day, non-stop till my eyes started to water, lol.

Best $50 I spent since I bought Fallout 3 a week ago.
(SOOO hard to distinguish play time between Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead. Both are just to good not to play).

 

I feel kinda cheated. Bought L4D off Steam for US$44.99, and I found out it was already in stores locally (Singapore) for US$33.

 

just use fraps for fps

 

steam has that deal where you buy 4 copies for $150, meaning the games are $37.50 for each copy. just get 3 friends with you to purchase it. i can see this game being modded a lot.

does anyone know any console commands to improve fps by any degree? with my setup and what i have it set at (1920 x 1200, everything High, no AA or AF), i'm at a solid 40 fps, though i get random lag spikes.

however, i don't like motion blur or depth of field for multiplayer games (or at least games with intense needed reaction times), and i want to turn them off in console. anyone know how?

 

Why us fraps when steam has a built in way?

I usually use: net_grap 3

net_graph 0 to turn it off

This command works for pretty much all valve games. The console is all the same, except for game specific commands.

 

These are some screen shots of tha full version game I played. Paid 449.99+tax at EBgames. but, all in all, worth the cost, since it is a valve game I know there will be mods, updates, and new maps all the time.. so.. good investment.

 

on my specs, with 2AA, and 2AF, full GFX, one option not on Extra High , I get Frames anywhere from 20fps-80fps, depending on the senario, but the game plays very well. I am sure with more updates and such and better GFX drivers frams rates will be more consistant. If you havea GFX card that has DDR3, you will probably get good frames, as my 9600mGT is the DDR2 falvour.

 

well because net_graph 3 is a big ugly bar, while fraps and CL_showFps 1 is small

 

cl_showfps is better for just fps.

Anyone have any tips? I'm a beginning playing single player @ the moment on advanced and it's very wreckless. I love the game but the restarting at the beginning of the map everytime you die...is unnecessary. Annoying to say the least on difficult difficulties.

Here are a few tips:


Survivors

- STICK TOGETHER... this is the most important point
- Keep your backs to the wall, avoid being flanked
- Crouch down when you are in front of your team mates, don't strafe around
- Try to bottleneck the zombie hordes, e.g. doorways
- Always keep moving, special zombies respawn after around 30 seconds
- Use molotovs against Tanks and stay FAR away from them. In expert difficulty, set them on fire and RUN AWAY. Let them burn out.
- Listen for special zombies, a good set of headphones will let you determine their location quite easily


Infected

- Play as a team, spawn around the same location
- Let the boomer puke on them, wait for the hordes to come, then use hunters to pounce them while they are busy
- Always try to pick off survivors that are separated from their friends
- Use the smoker from high locations, peek over the balcony so that only your head is exposed to enemy fire
- Use stealth and teamwork combined
- When playing as a Tank, your goal is not to kill them but to knock them down so they are helpless against the horde

 

Especially true. So many people don't understand that.

My whole point was that fraps isn't needed for source games. Use cl_drawfps. Cool whatever. I like the extra info net_graph displays. Either way, fraps is useless for source games. Unless you're just really lazy or want to capture video.

 

Thanks for the compliments on the 1st shot. while in game it is hard to get a nice shot/take your time to get one as it comes... since the rest of the team wants to move on or your getting eating by the zombos..lol
