Well, I have ordered a new computer, which I am confident will play any game currently on the shelves, however, I am interested in getting a fairly bona fide guide as to what I won't be able to play on Vista 64. Here's what I have:

    Starcraft
    Baldur's Gate
    Warcraft III
    KOTOR
    Empire at War
    Battlefront
    Republic Commando
    Alien Vs Predator Gold
    Battlefield 2

Anyone know what I can't play straight up, just putting it in the drive, and what I can't play no matter what? I'm not asking for directions "How-to" just some guidance.

I have vista 64 bit and ive been able to play everything, even C&C1!. It needed a patch, but still.

For starcraft all you needa do is right click, and go into the shortcut option stuff, and check

    - Compatability mode for Windows XP SP2
    - Check, Run in 256 Colors
    - Check, Run in 640x480
    - Check, Disable Visual Themes

    And then it works!
Im sure the same goes for most older games.

Btw, for WC3, BF2, you wont have any problems then will run without you having to do anything.

I play starcraft on Vista just fine. the other poster is right about compatibility settings. Just install and try. Most of the time they work or just need compatibility settings change to fool it into launching like you are on xp.

Also, if you want to play even older games, you can always load up a program called DOSBox.

WC3 and KotOR works fine on my system
If the games you want to play are a bit older, be sure to set the compatibility as Monkey suggested. If you run into problems afterwards, just ask here

Another trick that works for older games (if all else fails) is to disable sound.
Vista changed the driver model for sound and this often causes much fun for older games.

Truth be told I don't feel as if I am missing anything in Vista64.

I play battlefield 2 on my vista basic(64 bit) just fine...i had to make some compatibility adjustments, but it worked out overall...oh and diablo II LOD won't work on vista whatsoever. Blizzard is offering no patches or updates as of yet, and I can't see them offering one in the future. This bummed me out.

Also add Scarface: The World is Yours to that list. It is incompatible with Vista and Vivendi has said they have no plans to rectify that.

I've played hours and hours of Diablo 2: LoD on Vista x86, dunno what the problem is supposed to be there. Haven't tried Vista x64 yet.

Should have named thread "Oh 64", not "Oh vista". Normal (32) vista is fine, 64 has problems with compatibility.

I played D2lod on 32 with no problems. Although I think, I had to use compatibility mode.

So compatibility mode actually works in Vista?

I know in XP it didn't do squat for me.

Name a game which doesn't run on Vista64 but runs fine on the Vista32 version. The 64bit OS executes 32 bit programs just like the 32 bit version. So I don't see your point.

    Agreed.

Ive been using Vista 64 bit for a while now too, and I find it no different from 32 bit. Except that some applications that I have I now can run in 64 bit, which actually had quite a significant performance increase :p.

Crysis runs faster too in 64 Bit. OMG! But just by a lil. Lol.

Oh I can load it fine, and start the game up, but by the time I see my char.(on single or BNet)and move said character, my frame rate goes into the toilet. As long as I'm standing still, the framerate is fine...I loaded it on my inspiron b130 from 5 years ago, works fine with all clocks at max...the video card in the b130 compared to the hp dv9700 isn't half as good...i guess it's just something else...i can't get the thing to work. :(

The best way to make sure your old games run: get Virtual Machine from MS and install windows 98 on it. All of my oldest games run.
