Ok so I just bought a new sony vaio laptop. I wanted to install the newest 9.4 ATI drivers for the gpu. So heres what happened:

    - Downloaded newest drivers from ati official site
    - Went to the uninstall programs section in control panel, closes thing I could find to ati drivers was "Ati catalyst install manager", so i uninstalled it and it uninstalled ati drivers within the process.
    - Then restarted the laptop
    - Then installed newest drivers with the catalyst control center.
    - Restarted laptop
    - After the restart the highest available resolution was 1400x1050, I couldn't find the ati control centre and can find no evidence of the laptop even recognizing the ATI GPU after the restart.

I've gone through this sequence twice now and each time the drivers haven't been updated properly and the same thing has happened.

What has gone wrong and how can I fix it, please help, it's really irritating seeing as I only got the laptop today and I already have a problem, Thanks.

Well, I'm not an expert on ATI cards, but I would think you uninstalled the wrong thing. You need to uninstall the drivers, not the Catalyst program. Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> *Insert name here* is what you want to uninstall. Boot up in safe mode with networking, try removing old drivers, restart, and install new drivers.

    Good luck.

You made no mention of using the Mobility Modder program, which is what modifies the driver INF so that it installs on the mobile variant of an ATI card; so I'm assuming you didn't use it. Also, when the install is completed, it always writes a log that you should check at the end, otherwise it gives no notification that the driver was installed (although the CCC program will be).

All that aside, I'm afraid you'll have to use the 9.1 driver from ATI's website, because the modification program I mentioned earlier doesn't work with the latest Catalyst drivers.

I've read all of the update graphics sticky post. I have tried uninstalling the drivers from the device manager and uninstalled the ati control centre from add/remove program in control panel, i then restarted and installed the newly downloaded drivers from the ati website, then restarted and still the maximum resolution is lowered and it's not reading that there is a gpu or any drivers.

You're not reading the posts in this thread.

Regular AMD/ATI driver DO NOT WORK on their mobile chipsets.

You need a program called "MOBILITY MODDER", and you need the "CATALYST 9.1".

Then, you run the "CATALYST 9.1" installer, but CANCEL IT before you get to the installing step.

Next run "MOBILITY MODDER" and read the instructions to mod the drivers.

Once you get the drivers modded, THEN you go into the c:\ati folder and the next two folders till you find "SETUP.EXE" and then you run that program.

Finally, you will have the drivers installed.

For 9.4+ I think you need mobility modder as well as a modified inf. If its too much for you just install 9.1 with mobility modder, it will work.

Yeah I did the whole mobility moder thing and now the catalyst centre is at 9.4 and the drivers are at 8.6. It all came in one download (latest one on ati site) and everything is successfully installed now. I don't think I did anything with the Inf file, but if my current drivers aren't up to date I would really appreciate it a lot if you could tell me how to do the .inf file thing, im pretty sure I didn't do it.

^ Modification of INF files is exactly what the Mobility Modder does. The INF file simply contains a list of GPU models that are compatible with the driver; using the MM program adds your model (among others) to that list.

The Catalyst 9.4 drivers decreased my 3dMark Vantage GPU score from 2000 to 1750. The 9.2 Drivers appear to be solid at this point. If I were you I would stick with them for the time being. Check out the download at this site. After download run setup. Choose the uninstall option. Restart once complete. Run setup again. Then choose install this time. Voila. You will have successfully updated the drivers. You will also be able to find the latest 9.4 drivers at this site. But like I said, my graphics processor power suffered with that update.

    Good luck with the install
