I'm reading about the graphics card in the laptop I am buying in a couple weeks and I'm getting more confused the more I read.

    This is the laptop.
And the video card is labeled as:

    NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 GTS

I hear this is a great video card but they keep referring it under a different name, I wouldn't be worried about it if they were so close in name and can not find anyone explaining the difference.

Okay so here are the questions:
Is this the same video card as the NVIDIA GeForce 8800m-GTS? It seems like it should be, the only difference is the "go" and the "m" but reading up about these video cards a couple letters could be the difference between amazing and semi-par. This all just confuses me. I'm not a video card pro so bear with me. :\

    Second question:
Will this video card be able to run Crysis on High settings?
I know this can't be determined by just a video card but let's say I have the T9300 CPU and 3gb of RAM.

Will this video card be completely out of date in the next 3 months? Or will I be able to play new games on at least high? I really hope so, I'm not going to spend $1,600 (with the new processor included) to be out of date completely in a few months.

Sorry about the extra questions, I'm just so confused..

Also, how will I be able to tell just by a name if a Graphics card will be able to run it?

    Thanks for any help.

    -Justin

GTS isn't top of the line, but it should do ok for you. As to the Go vs m question, the reason it shows up that way is that Nvidia changed thier naming conventions. Up through the 7XXX line of GPUs, they labeled them as Nvidia Go [model number] to identify it as a mobile card. Starting with the 8XXX series of cards, they changed to XXXXm for mobile cards. Some sites have backend databases that still use the Go notation. Go and m are the same. What isn't the same is GTS and GTX.

You have relieved my mind. Thank you very much for the info, a question for you if you happen to look back at this thread, how much is the notebook in your signature? I'll look it up myself but it may be a custom notebook.

    Thanks again.

Try 1000 more than that. Of course, now it's cheaper... a month later. Heh. But not by that much.

I have few answers for you: :D
1.) the graphic card which gateway p-6860fx has is 8800m GT, not 8800GT, best buy made a typo on it.
2.) it will run crysis on high even with its stock CPU (1.83ghz)
3.) with 8800m GTS, you can still play the newest games at medium settings after 2 years at least, i personally gaurantee that.
4.) not sure what you meant by "how will I be able to tell just by a name if a Graphics card will be able to run it?"
5.) the laptop sirmetman has cost over $3000

No, I'm guessing it won't be outdated for at least 2 years. The 8800M GTS is the second most powerful gfx card for notebooks afterall so you should be able to run new games on high settings for a while... ;)

    My thanks to you. :D

I was about 90% sure I was going to buy this notebook and I am now 100% sure. Thank you very much but if I hate it I blame you! No just joking, thanks so much for the info I'm sure I will be very happy with this notebook. And WOW that is expensive. :) If I can run games for the next two years on at least medium I would feel like I got way more than I payed for. Thanks alot everyone. The only reason I'm upgrading the CPU to T9300 is because I am a huge fan of RTS games as well as FPS, and with starcraft 2 coming out I would like to be able to run directx10 nicely. Thanks again everyone and goodnight. ^.^
