I haven't really played an RPG since the Final Fantasy series was crippled to online only  but until then they were my favorite. Any recommendations of RPG games that are similar to the old FF's and that aren't limited to online only? I work on ship's so I rarely have an internet connection for my laptop. :(

I've got The Witcher 1 loaded, but it got boring quick and it's really not what I was looking for anyway.

Um, there have been new FF's released that aren't online only, unless you were saying that you don't like them.

    Anyways, try The Last Remnant.

The Last Remnant looks promising.

Which new(er) FF's aren't online only? Everyone I see in the stores say online only and broadband internet connection required.

FF XIII came out a couple years back, and that's offline (ps3), as well as FFXII (PS2)

I hated the last Remnant personally I just couldn't get into it the characters just didnt work for me. If you are looking at an RPG then head straight to Witcher 2 its a massive improvement on the 1st one.

You cant beat the old games though to be honest, I picked up a PS1 and FF9 the other day for dirt cheap just so I could relive the good old days. FF7&9 are the best there is and its sad that Square Enix choose to move away from what use to make games great. Im currently trying to get into FF13 but struggling I am still near the start and need to force myself to get into it to get passed the initial stage as I hear it gets better? Please say it gets better :(

Ah... I guess I should've said for PC only too. :)

...and @ Dallers: I don't know how well TW2 will play on a GT540M. I know it will... I just don't know how well. I just might have to pick up some of the older FF's to replay...

You might need to tweak the settings quite a bit but it should run recent updates have improved things a lot and the story is worth a run through especially the non human story I was gripped.

Cannot beat the old games Baldurs 2, FF7-12, Planescape, System Shock 2 they dont make em like they used too :) Have you played FF9? I pretty much believe that when I played this game I was at a such a low point in my life it pretty much saved me. I fight to want to like 7 more but 9 wins it for me the story was inspirational.

Hmm... might have to try TW2 then.

I've played 7 but I never played 9, I think because I'd given up console gaming and went primarily to PC by then.

I am a vain fussy fool when it comes to graphics once they are outdated I struggle to enjoy playing older games and get bored easily.

FF9 on the PS1 is the exception :D If you can play it! I would happily bet my kidney on it that you would give it a 10/10 if you did.

I'll have to see if I can dig up an old PS/PS2 and FF9 on the cheap sometime in the near future then... although I think my son might have a PS2 buried in the closet at home. I'll have to get the wife to look and mail it out if so. :)

You can check som FF games on PSP or Nintendo DS too... you can carry those with you easily. I don't know how good would those games be, never tried. Also, FF8 is on PC, but is a bit expensive

I hated 9, thought the characters were all terrible except vivi and beatrix, and the story line was so weird... 7 is still the best, and its branched games were pretty decent.

I actually really liked 13, but was never able to finish it. I thought the combat system was the most interactive of any FF's' that I've played to date. That's the only thing that's ever bothered me about FF games is how terrible the combat systems are, and I thought 13 was headed in the right direction, however, I do really like The Last Remnants combat system because there's a little bit of strategy invovled, but I do agree a lot of the characters are bland or obnoxious (I've grown attached to the chick and the 4-armed guy though).

Also, some other old school games that play like old school FF are Phantasy Star 1-4 (before they became that phantasy star online crap). You should be able to find those on a sega emulator or something.

FF9 and 10 using emulators. I wouldn't play lost remnant, it just didn't seem like that great of a game to me.

It actually gets better in my opinion, after 3 hours of boring play (forced myself, since I've finished every Final Fantasy there is, must finish this one too) and it actually got better, I enjoyed it. Finished it in 5 days only though, still haven't gotten around to get their maxed weapons since each character has more than one maxed out weapon that has different stats. Got one Omega Weapon for Lightning though.

Agreed, I think it is easily the weakest FF of the series story (and character) -wise. Visually it is gorgeous (the CG backgrounds) and probably the best-looking PS game.
