I've been looking for some place to download older games that aren't on steam (legal downloads, of course). I'm especially interested in Silent Hill 2, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Do you guys know any good place?
-
gametap? even though it's subscription based.
-
try GoG.com They specialize in old games for cheap.
-
GoG.com FTW!
-
gog is good, but i don't think they have silent hill 2.
-
No, GoG is new, but ramping up very quickly I might add. No subscription, you own (well as far as 'own' goes for software) the game, no more DRM crap. And it's relatively inexpensive.
-
GoG does look really promising. Thanks a lot!
I'm still a bit bummed out about Silent Hill though. I've played Homecoming and thought it was average at best, but the second part is supposed to be one of the best games ever if Yahtzee is to be believed... -
Goozex.com. 1$/trade + trading points. (PM me and I will send you a referal link)
Although, it doesn't look like there is a lot of trading for Silent Hill 2 (i am #8 in the trading queue.
But overall, the Goozex experience has been positive. -
I personally liked SH 3 better than part 2. 2 is scarier, but 3 is overall better.
-
Goozex sounds pretty cool, but I'm in a weird situation regarding games. I'm in college right now, and all I have with me are a few games that I really like, which is why I'm more interested in downloading than sharing.
Yeah, I will play SH3 eventually as well XD -
This may be a bit too old but they sure have some great ones up here all free to download. Some are trials/demos but most are full free version released by the companies.
www.dosgames.com
I always get games off there to play on DOSBox for some retro enjoyment. -
My experience with Good Ol' Games... www.gog.com...
Someone mentioned the above site here a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of days ago, I began checking it out...
Nice web pages with a hip, sassy attitude and a decent game selection...especially for old Epic and Interplay titles...
I bit today and purchased Sacrifice (very different and cool RTS...like Overlord which I just purchased off Steam...Overlord gave me nostalgia for Sacrifice...), M.A.X., and Unreal Gold.
Sacrifice worked just fine with no hitches...(but the desktop shortcut points to a 'gogwrapper.exe'...I re-directed it to the Sacrifice executable and the game still works fine...)
gog.com had M.A.X. running under DosBox...I prefer my DosBox setup so I stripped all the files into my DOS games folder and it still worked fine...
Unreal Gold (the only $10 title I bought...don't ask me why) was a no worky-worky though...I perused their forums (they already have a healthy community) and there were lots of suggestions about using non-Epic patches and mods (which I don't like doing...call me a purist) but no real help on why I couldn't just install it and run it as advertised...I've sent an e-mail to their customer support and I'll see how that goes...
But the downloads seem like someone used their personal collection (or, heaven forbid, a torrent site) and got the games working in XP or Vista and then programmed their own installer to zip up their game folders and make the appropriate registry entries if it was a Windows title...the website is based out of Poland and I'm not sure how strict their copyright laws are...and I'm not sure the publishers (or whoever owns the IPs) will care...Interplay won't (rest in peace)...and there's not much online presence for most of the games they sell...they do have an agreement with Ubisoft (Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil, IL-2, etc) which lends some legitimacy...I was just a bit disturbed to find M.A.X. having DosBox included...
I run DosBox and it's freeware, but I don't bundle it up with DOS games and then sell it...I hope the DosBox fellas are getting their cut...
And each game installation, whether it was DOS based or Windows, stuck an instance of Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0 on my system...that makes me extremely nervous...I got rid of the instances and it didn't affect gameplay...I imagine that it had something to do with the 'gogwrapper' or 'goginstaller'...
Anyway, the games do work and they're very reasonably priced...I was just curious about how they go DRM free, and now I'm afraid to ask many more questions...
EDIT: www.dosbox.com is promoting gog.com in their news section...so apparently the dosbox authors aren't out anything... -
Oh, dosbox brings back happy memories. I used it to play Day of the Tentacle. Good times...
Thanks for all the tips guys. I'll definitely check gog out when I once again have money to spend... -

I had a look at GOG.com the other day and although their collection is still small, some of the games they have are real gems and worth playing despite the dated graphics.
Seeing the Battle Chess series, 7 Kingdoms Ancient Adversaries and Sacrifice really did surprise me. -
And I didn't realize Interplay was still kicking around, but according to wikipedia, it's true...but if the wikipedia article is correct, and I'm reading it right, Bethesda would be the interested party for Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout: Tactics that gog.com is selling...
I just wish that gog.com sold the original disc image for those of us who can set up compatibility on our own...
