Hey guys. I've played and am still playing Oblivion which has wetted my appetite for RPG's again. Since I haven't really played many RPG's in the past, I'd like to get ahold of some of the great ones and catch-up, so to speak.

Was hoping you all could provide some suggestions. I'd really like to play something that has a good storyline to keep me interested, and of course graphics and gameplay are important too. Any type of RPG is fine. Fantasy-historical, futuristic, etc. Thanks for your suggestions!

P.S - Not looking for anything extreamly old.. as in pre-2000, unless it's an absolute "must play".

Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale both have great storylines, although the gameplay did let me down a bit. The Final Fantasy series have good storylines, and 7 and 8 were released for the PC once upon a time.
Those mentioned above are pretty old, but many have loved them.

What about the Bard's Tale series. And, if you are willing to go really back, I mustr recommend a personal favourite RPG: Zelda for the SNES. It is a classic with a storyline that you will not find in today's RPG!

Might and Magic VI. Its graphics are... well... old, you know. But the story was great. Maybe NeverWinter Nights is another option.

    Cheers.

For very old and old RPG: go for Final Fantasy 7 ( a must play game if you play RPG) , Fallout 1 and 2 (very good, they made American RPG as good as Japan RPG with this) , Diablo 1 and 2 (does action RPG count?) I did not played Baldur's Gate so I dont know.
For new RPG: Never Winter Night and exp is very very good. Dungeon Seige 1 and 2 is good (lot of looting). And the upcoming Titam quest, I played the demo and it good, like Diablo in Greece which is good.
I havent played KOTOR, Bard Tale for my PC is dying.
Hope this help, have a nice day.

My all time favourite RPG games are Baldur's Gate 1, 2 + expansion, Diablo 1, 2 + expansions, Neverwinter Nights + 2 expansions, KOTOR 1 and 2 and Fallout 1 and 2. SpellForce is an RTS with a well-implemented RPG element. Out of all these, NWN offers the most replayability due to the vast number of community created modules which are available and the great variety of characters classes to play with.

OK, these are older titles I'll admit... but I think they've aged gracefully.

System Shock 1 & 2 - Equal parts FPS, RPG and adventure... with a hefty dose of survival horror thrown in. Not to be played with the lights out. A perfect warmup for the upcoming release of Bioshock... :D

Dues Ex & Dues Ex 2: Invisible War - The sequel wasn't as good but the original picked up a truckload of awards in it's day. I spent months playing this one. Like SS and SS2 above, a compelling blend of FPS, RPG and adventure...

They made Vagrant and FFtactic for PC? I dont think so, You can play with emulation but with bad quality.

Well, since the OP liked Oblivion, how about recommending Morrowind? Aside from this, there really is nothing else I can recommend that hasn't been said already.

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. These should keep me busy for quite some time. I've never played any of the Final Fantasy series and managed to find a copy of Final Fantasy VII, so I'll give that one a go. Going to look for KOTOR and Fallout also. Fallout was actually mentioned more than any other in the thread I think, so looking forward to that one. Thanks again!

you could always try out morrowind and daggerfall, to see where oblivion came from (daggerfall might be pushing it on the age thing...)

there's arx fatalis, and the gothic series as well.

Other RPGs I really enjoyed were Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind. Baldur's Gate isn't bad either...

Wow, I must be old. I can't believe no one has mentioned Betrayal at Krondor yet - one of the greatest games I have ever played. It is pretty **** old though.

im with chaz, kotor is an excelent game, i thoroughly enjoyed it as both an rpg and as a star wars game that has the pros of lightsabres and the force, but minus the plot from the films (which makes a change from the usual star wars game), it is set a few thousand years before the films i think.

I agree. Lose Diablo 2, though, it's crude and very repetitive. I own a copy w/ Expansion.

You'll be blown away by Final Fantasy, I guarantee it. I've been a big console gamer for a while, so my favorite RPGs are on the SNES and the Playstation. If you have the origianal games you are legally allowed to get emulated ISOs.
