I dunno about anyone else, but I'm really itching to play some classic real-time strategy games. The only problem is, the graphics aren't like the new-school real-time strategy games. A face-lift would do wonders. I just can't stand to look at the sprite-y-ness of StarCraft or Age of Empires anymore.
I like the new real-time strategy games like Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer 3, Company of Heroes, and I'm probably going to get World in Conflict.. but I really want a new game to come out that is like Age of Empires II, but with updated 3d graphics.
I miss the old gather the Wood, Gold, Food, and Stone gameplay. All the new games are over-simplifying it. Supreme Commander is 2 resource based, and the economy system is much different than any other game I've played.. no gatherers or anything, just generators that do the work for you. Command & Conquer 3 is all about just getting tiberium to get money. Single resource, very simple. Company of Heroes is just capturing control points to get what you need. Where are my peons?
StarCraft II is just on the horizon.. and I can't wait for it. But what I'm really waiting for is a WarCraft IV, or an Age of Empires IV that hearkens back to the medieval/fantasy genre of real-time strategy games. All the new ones that are coming/have come out are WWII or futuristic games.
Age of Empires III.. is all right, but playing in the revolutionary era isn't that fun. I really just want one more simple, medieval strategy game. Age of Empires IV anyone?

^^yep. i reckon.
i don't really worry too much about graphics any more. companys are just putting too much effort into that rather than gameplay.
AoE2 player still -

wheres empire earth, that game is still fun

I'm really really really hoping they're already working hard on Warcraft IV. They were working on Starcraft II for 4 years and were pretty quiet about that. Hopefully they'll just use the SCII engine and work on balance and story and it won't take 10 years to release ^_^

The command conquer always were single resource. Even the older ones sprites based. It's not a fault of newer games, although I really like command conquer

I'll probably play it for a few days and when I have time I'll write about it. Global Domination sounds really fun
-
it does indeed, sounds a bit like hearts of iron. man i love taking over the world as the germans.

yeah, its like a risk map with an RTS to fight for territories with
-
plus a lot of bugs and gliches, but its still fun.
anyway, i think they might ruin this one anyway. -
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
yeah, I get that feeling... its too mainstream, no deviation of the norm like more epochs, 15 epochs was fun for me.
-
and this other resource????? tech points, whats the go with that crap.
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
In the second one, tech points were the easiest thing to get, its like you have to get a certain amount of technology upgrades from this list, then you can epoch up. it took like 3 minutes to epoch up each time. its stupid, i didn't even need an army, i got nukes fast enough
-
I still play Warcraft 2. Kali net days were the shizznit!!!! Zug Zug

Rise of Nations is a decent strategy game with decent graphics and an interesting resource system.
You have food, lumber, wealth, knowledge, and stone. Food is gathered from farms, wood from trees, wealth from territory and trade routes, and knowledge from Universities. Its not very high resolution - I'm thinking 1280 or so - but still a lot of fun. -
i didn't really like ron. the most annoying thing was the resource gathering, 5 farms to a TC??????? then the research, and trading for gold?????? plus the territory thing.......i like aoe 2 and EE better.

WARCRAFT 3!!!!!
Probably one of the best strategy games ever made, i like the idea that you can mod it to nearly every other genre: rpg, action, puzzle, and hell of alot more but my favorite is TD
Otherwise i would reccommend you these games, maybe not so fancy graphics but gameplay is top notch...

I strongly recommend Age of mythology. The 3D graphics hold up quite well in my opinion and it has most of the resource collecting you mentioned. There is no stone to collect but instead you can place villagers on temples for favor.
It still has a quite a few playing online, although I havn't checked recently. However the overall single player package is decent. Make sure you get the gold edition or both age of mythology and its expansion the titans. -
I've been a hardcore Rtser for ages, and honestly, the best Rts games imo, are
Age of empires 2 , the conqurers- Wow i just don't know where to start, this game was awsome, both in terms of complexity , and also a great thing about this game was i ACTUALLY enjoyed the team games, even on team island.
Age of mythology - good game on the whole, but a bit watered down compared to age of empires 2.
Warcraft 3- not a bad game, but more of micro-craft than a strategy game.
Empire Earth - i loved this game as well... but the online lobby and interface was kinda bad which made alot of people not stick with it. The concept of the game was great, and microing the units in this game felt slick and smooth(just had a good feel to it)
used to have the nicks Storm_waters, legendaryleader, Anything in these games, and i'm really really looking hard for a good rts, with only COH that has really impressed me with its depth and interesting concepts. but thats hard to take in with the state that relic online is in..
Older RTS Games..
