I'm wondering if there are any older games I'll be able to appreciate on a newer laptop. I mean, ones I can ramp up to insane draw distances and resolutions and still notice a difference. There aren't a ton of games I really want right now, but I still want to appreciate a moar pow0rful laptop.
Though any games with huge, explorable worlds would be great even if it doesn't show off the GPU.

Older game with huge, explorable worlds = Elders scrolls series Morrowind.
-
Off the top of my head, these two would fall into that category - very scalable draw distance, huge worlds, beautiful design over flashy graphics.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Gothic II + NoTR -
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i havent played gothic or NoTR (was is that?) but morrowind is a great game
-
-
Far Cry? Not an RPG, but it sure does look pretty.
-
ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i havent played that yet, only on console any good? would it look better on my 9262
with 2.33 dual core, 2GB ram and single 8800m GTX then it did on 360?

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
thanx. i might have to pick it up then. its part of 3 for £10 deals
-
Well I already pointed out I was a fan of the Elder Scrolls but I guess you missed those threads.
Gothic II looks like an awesome choice at the moment.
I hope I can find my Bioshock CD I really want to play that again :| Though I think I lost my savefile, is there an archive somewhere? I was halfway through the gardens level(a lot of slowdown on my Znote 6615WD, only has a Go7600). -
Gothic 2 is highly rated but stay away from its latest incarnation since it's a mixed bag. -
Commander Keen, Descent, Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall 2097, Xargon, Prince of Persia, Scorched Earth, etc.
DOSBox FTW. -

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
i might to have a look for G2 if its that good.
i had a look on Youtube and found a video and the graphics looked great with swaying trees and everything, then i noticed it was Gothic 3, is the game really that bad? -
If you get some older DOS games, you will notice a difference in play. They will often play at hyper-speed as they were designed to be processor-bound.

Diablo II : Lord of Destruction ..
Still a very nice, addictive game -
I wish I could find SimIsle and a way to get it to run on modern hardware/OS.

OLD TIMER!
One Must Fall 2097 = awesome. -
Oh dude, I didn't even notice that one. Scorched Earth! lol, I used to love that game.
Also, if anyone wants to take the risk: http://free-game-downloads.mosw.com/abandonware/pc/simulations/games_s/simisle_for_windows_95.html
It's an abondonware site that isn't abandonia with SimIsle. Mods, if abondonware counts as piracy, just edit this piece back out of the post.
There are also some copies of Sim bundles available on Amazon. SimMania looks pretty good. Thinking about getting it, just hope I can get SimIsle and SimTower to run. -
I'd say the chonicles of riddick and half life 2/the orange box
-
If we are thinking of HL2 as "old", perhaps Oblivion?
-
I'd really like something a bit bright and naturey like Oblivion rather than more "gritty" post apocalyptic sci-fi games which so many PC games seem to be this game. I'm wary of any sci-fi based game these days which is kind of sad.

Rome: Total War looks pretty good maxed out. It's an epic scale RTS game. Is that your thing?
-
I generally prefer quirker RTS like Warcraft 3.
-
How about the Thief series?
-
10 years old and it's still fun as hell.
you can change the game speed in multiplayer. -
Dungeon Siege I & II both look nice and detailed, are set in vast, beautiful landscapes (with a lot of themed set-ups: ice, lush forests, dungeons, castles, deserts etc.) and provide fun, action-based RPG experience. Might be worth taking a look.
Older games?
