Hey guys, looking at buying a new laptop...was thinking of ebaying some older XPS systems or alienwares...the gpus should hold up better than the mid-range stuff I could get now for the same price right?

example SLI 8800 m? or the 7900 series?

That is correct, buying a used laptop will mostly get u more for the money if u buy smart. Especially where i come from (Norway).

I would suggest a high end DX 10 card like the 8800GTX in SLI if u want a XPS 1730. The 7xxx is really outdated now and not recomended. I still have a laptop with a single 8800m GTX and it scores 11k on 3dmark 06 and 6k on vantage with a good overclock.

I can also play new games on it with no problem, even max out some so a 8800 GTX sli system is great if u can get it for the right prize

Just try to get the best GPU money can buy. It really depends on your budget and the prices in ur country.

You can look here for a ruff estimate how good certain GPU's are etc Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The newer model you get the better but try to get a high end model like Ati 5800 series or 4800 series or Nvidia 460, 360, 260-285, 9800 series or 8800 series. The newer the better

Don't get anything from the 8000M series - at this point it's probably either dead or dying from melted solder.

While the problem mostly heavily affects the 8400M and 8600M series, quite a few people on this forum have had a fried (melted?) 8800M as well.

    Well, think about it:

    1) The 8800M was launched at the end of 2007 and was sold throughout 2008.
    2) After Nvidia settled the lawsuit, all warranties were extended to 3 years.
    3) As a result, most warranties would have expired sometime in 2011.
    4) If you were the original owner, what would you do if a just-out-of-warranty laptop started having problems?

For $1000, you can get a brand new notebook with a GTX 560M.

    Here's one:

    Newegg.com - TOSHIBA Qosmio X775-Q7380 Notebook Intel Core i5 2430M(2.40GHz) 17.3" 6GB Memory DDR3 1333 640GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

Dual core Sandy Bridge + GTX 560M for around $1000 is pretty common, especially if you check the big etailers for their regular sales. I've even seen quad core SB + GTX 560M for $1000, back when the 2630QM was replaced by the 2670QM.

I have no experience with this particular laptop though, so if you do decide to get it, check with the Toshiba forum first.

If I have a choice between the GT 555m ( alienware m14 ) or a GTX 560, I want to go with the 560 right? I really want the alienware for looks but if the 560 is way better than I'll go with that.

The 555M is technically 2 completely different GPUs sharing the exact same name - the inferior GF 108-based version is half a 560M, the superior GF 106-based version is three quarters a 560M.

IIRC the Alienware version is the superior one, but the 560M is much faster than either version of the 555M.

Haha my first post on NBR was about a faulty 8600m right out of the box, which was replaced under warranty.

there were actually 4 different gt 555m, now there are 5, and the aw version is still the best, however there is quite a performance gap.

Sincerely have you thought about checking out sagers/clevo resellers? like xotic, malibal, and so forth? The NP8150 is quite a gaming machine, and will let you upgrade the gpu (if nvidia doesnt change the mxm standard so soon)

You can check Dell outlet for alienwares too. You can get a Crossfire 5870, 5850 or single 560GTX with i7 at nice prices.
