Haha, nice find. I'm used to their articles being really silly, humorous and hard to take seriously!

What trend pisses everyone off the most, I wonder?

It seems weird to say but... out of all this nonsense - release an unfinished game then charge for DLC, or so many annual sequels, the vision of the future continues to seem bleak. Nintendo is at least trying, but it remains to be seen if they're going to just milk another cash cow gimmick like they did with the Wii.

The Kinect is still in it's infancy... apparently they're releasing an SDK for PC, but it seems the Kinect's best features are applied outside of gaming.

And we rely can't rely on graphics so much anymore. I haven't felt excited about a directx release since DX9... and 3D is meh.

If people keep buying it, they will make more. I don't see what's so surprising about it. Modern warfare is catered to the kewl high school kids who will buy every sequel without a second thought. 2 years down the road we will see modern warfare 4 with the same engine and then guess what will happen 2 years later?

I agree with the creative bankruptcy part of the article.

At least some devs still makes sequels with soul and passion, unlike certain DLC milking ones.

Very nice article, it's really worth reading. I really liked the part where he 'summarizes' M$, Sony and Nitendo game presentations ;D

I thin ME3 should have been left out, seeing as this has been a trilogy since before the project started. It does however fit the model of endless Payment with all it's DLC's

This is so depressing. I mean during the 90's and early 2000's when things were good, companies were throwing out money for new ideas. Sure you can easily take risks then, but now is when you REALLY need to take some risks to break new ground. With the economy the way it is, making something new and different and that stands out is what we need.

All these stupid gaming publishers won't touch anything that isn't like every other game out there. If they would just inject some money into some Indie developers that show promise, and take the chance. Even if they have a dozen failures, if they get one home run, will more than make up for any money they would have lost.

But instead they keep paying tens of millions of dollars for same-same games, instead of a million bucks which is all it would probably take for some Indie developer to make an awesome game.

If I won one of those crazy $500M lottery jackpots, I'd throw $1M to a couple dozen indie developers that showed promise, hold contests for winning a contract, or something to inspire ideas instead of keeping the same stagnant staff on hand that keeps churning out crap.

Through the 90's and early 2000's I couldn't buy all the games that were awesome and the games I did buy just couldn't ever get through them because of the time required. Too many awesome games to count. Now I end up not playing most games because they suck. I quit because I've had enough. That or they last three hours and you're done. Now I can count on one hand the games I want to buy for the year, and half of those end up being mediocre and in some cases suck altogether.

on your last point... do you sometimes feel, maybe it's better that way? this is definitely something books, music, and film have felt for a while now... there's just so much to experience, but you can't get to everything. Now that I'm older I have bills to pay, less time to play, etc, so if I can find 5-10 games a year I want to buy, that's great. I may only end up beating 2 or 3 of them anyway. but like you said, that number does end up being lower overall, because usually they disappoint you.

I find the only way I really enjoy gaming now, at least this gen., is by owning a little bit of everything. If I just played games on my PC or 360, I'd be disappointed for sure. Thanks to ebay and price drops.. I didn't mind grabbing a ps3 and DS either. But sometimes I miss the days where a playstation or snes had more than enough games for me.

I've always been a PC gamer. Could never get used to consoles. Own an Xbox 360 and PS3 and they get little to no use. I use my Xbox 360 primarily as a streaming media player, and occasional kinect games when my nieces come over. PS3 I played some God of War and that's about it. It can't stream mkv's and many other file formats, so has made it worthless to me to stream media even. So it just sits there. I was using it as a blu-ray player, but it sucks at that too. Just a waste of money. Speaking of which I should sell it. Any amount I get for it will be money in my pocket.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind on selling your ps3 but I'd like to ask you to check out ps3 media server, it can play just about any file out there, including mkvs, with its transcoding ability. And forget about the crappy compression of transcoding you get with apps like tvversity... this is the real deal for quality when configured properly.

with a decent pc running in the background.. i'll admit I stream far more to my ps3 than I ever play games on it, but I owe it to that little free program right there. :D

I personally had more problems streaming on 360... and never really liked WMC outside of music (ps3's music playing options kind of suck)

Thanks for the link to the PS3 media server. I guess the one caveat is whether or not it will run on Windows Home Server or Home Server 2011.

Great article. The lack of creativity and innovation is depressing. But even being the cynic I am, I can't agree that the news for so-called hardcore gamers is all bad. Just look at Portal or Minecraft or Amnesia. Heck, even CoD shows that it has a few twists up its sleeve (No Russian, anyone?) Hopefully, upcoming hardware technology (true 3D, refined motion-sensing, etc.) can pave the way for new gameplay mechanics and maybe even define new genres.

Was a great read thanks for the link. This gives me a lot more respect for Arenanet and Guild Wars 2 and all the changes they are trying to make to break free of the usual grind of MMOs, and best off all keeping it subscription free.
