So I'm helping my gf find a laptop. She will do some gaming (WoW) and she will also be using it for school. Her budget is about $1000 so please let me know what you guys think of this build.

    dv6000t

    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5200(1.60GHz/2MB L2Cache)

    256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400

    1GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

I'm pretty much set on the video card (since its the best one you can purchase for this model). The memory can always be upgraded to more. I guess I'm wondering if i should get her a faster processor. I haven't been keeping up with processors (especially laptop ones). I definetly want a core duo 2 but I'm not sure which one. How much faster are the next two (T5600 and T7200)? Also do you think Wow will run well on this set up?

If I remember correctly, the T5600 Core 2 Duo is only a $50 upgrade from the T5200. That is by all means worth it - the T5600 is noticeably faster. The T5200 is not slow but is a budget CPU and is cut down (relatively low clock, slower Front-Side Bus).

Other than that the build looks good. What operating system? Ideally you are goign to want 2GB of RAM. If you can convince your friend to increase her budget about 20% ($200) that would fetch a nicer dv6000t.

Another option you can consider is the Dell Inspiron E1505. You can get more in that performance-wise for your dollar. Check the Dell Outlet for the best deals. I've seen Core 2 Duo, Radeon X1400, 160GB HDD/2GB RAM machines ship for less than $900. Just have to be there at the right time to grab a system. I'm thinking a Dell may be a better choice in this case.

WoW will run on just about anything so yes, the dv6000t/E1505 will easily run it. ;)

i have to agree with chaz on this one. 1GB of ram is actually starting to become entry level these days and 2 gigs is starting to be the sweet spot for laptops. and wtf? how the heck can dell ship a notebook with those specs for so cheap? at the volume they sell them at probably, right? u could also look up <html> teh egg</html> they got some good deals on lappys

I think all the new machines now come with Windows Vista (I think this one comes with basic). I was actually thinking of installing WinXP on her box so it would be faster.

So there is a big difference between the T5200 and T5600 in terms of performance? I wasn't aware of that. I mean I know on paper it's only a few mghz faster but wasn't aware it was that big of a difference.

I was never a big Dell fan but I did consider that model as well. Are both machines equally dependable? I want this to last her a while so therefore make it as future proof as possible. Do you think she will be able to run any other 3d games and get decent fps on this setup?
