Ok everyone, i am new into this site and found it while trying to find info regarding a laptop i am thinking of buying.
I am an owner of a Travelmate 800LCI although it is really decent and still can perform quite ok i am moving to something more powerfull.
I am a programmer and IP Engineer so my laptop follows me everywhere work, home, travelling.
I am also into games (when i have free time) so thats another reason i am upgrading.
Because of the really good impressions i aquired 3 years owning the Travelmate 800lci i decided to move again to the same company.
So here is what i wan't to do and i am waiting for your comments:

    Games:

    1) BF (nearly all versions, 1942, Vietnam, BF2)
    2) Age Of empires III (haven't tryed it yet)
    3) Call of Duty 2

I am running Linux & Windows XP and i usually have lots of programs running around, i do occasionaly use 3D programs such as Vue D'Esprit.

    Programs:
    1) Zend (Java PHP Editor)
    2)MySQL - Apache sandbox platform
    3) Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Flash
    4) Vue D'Esprit

After lots of searching and having a budget around 1700 euros (and i have to go through a local dealer) i came across this platform:

    Acer Aspire 5514WLMI

    CPU: Intel M 760 (2.0GHz)
    RAM: 2X512 DDR2
HD: 100GB (dunno RPM Specs though)
    Video: ATI X700 256MB DDRIII
Screen: 15.4'' WXGA Acer CrystalBrite (1440x900)
DVD Dual Double Layer Slot In.
    GB Ethernet & 802.11g
There is also a TV tunner etc but thats not a priority for me.
As to the specs i think memory + Video seem really good so i would appreciate any comments, even if you don't own this specific laptop i think you could provide me a comment regarding the specs.

Nice laptop. You won't have any problems at all gaming on that.

You may want to upgrade the RAM to 2GB though, newer games can take advantage of that. I really noticed the difference when I upgraded my rig to 2GB from 1. Still, just try the 1GB out for now, if you are happy, then stick with it. ;)

Another Acer to check out is the Aspire 5024 as well, has an AMD processor.

Ok i got a call back from the dealer...unfortunately the aspire has made itself a bestseller and they are out of it, next delivery date for them is about at 3 weeks and for me 4 weeks...thats too long for me, he suggest i move to:
    Aspire 1694 WLMI
    Intel Centrino2 Pentium M 2.0GHz CPU 533MHz FSB
    100GB HD at 5400 RPM
    ATI RX700 256MB PCI-Express.
    1GB (2x512MB) of RAM
    DVD Dual Layer recorder
15.4" Crystal bright XGA TFT 1280x800 (Ok here is a question is the 1280x800 the analysis only for widescreen settings? or am i wrong?)
The price is a bit lower from the 5514 due to Processor and TV Tunner differences but i think its a nice deal as well, so i am moving to it...

The 1280x800 WXGA display is widescreen, yes. 16:10 aspect ratio.

The 1694 is a nice notebook, you certainly get a lot for your money. X700 256MB has awesome performance.

Have you checked out the 5024?

I checked it (thanks for pointing it) but in Greece (my home country) it comes with an x700 64Mb so i think the 256 would be a better solution.
More over from my travelmate 800lci experience up to day the biggest problem i experienced was: lack of a good gfx card to play newer games (don't mind if settings are at the highest since i own also a desktop system that performs pretty much ok up to the moment).
Applications where running ok on the 800LCI but the main problem was due to lack of memory (512Mb on the travelmate) i was suffering sometimes due to many open heavy apps (photoshop + Zend + Dreamweaver + winamp ) etc.
    Thanks for the input :)
I will get back with info on it tomorrow (i hope tomorrow) when i get it :)

Ok I see. I strongly recommend against getting an X700 with only 64MB of memory, or any video card for that matter. Performance will suffer with the latest games, and even some previous-generation ones. 128MB is the minimum these days for comfortable gameplay IMO.
