Opinions on these 2 notebooks?

Okay so I'm getting a new notebook shortly, by the end of this week most likely.

My choices:

Asus G51JX - X5 which comes with:

ASUS G51JX-X5 Gaming Notebook, Dark Brown - Intel Core i7-720QM, 15.6" FHD 1920x1080, 6GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M 1GB, DVD-writer, 802.11bgn, Gb LAN, Bluetooth, HDMI, eSATA, FireWire, Webcam, Card Reader, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (no Bag & Mouse)

And theres a door crasher going on for this on saturday for $999 cdn, with the regular price being $1299. I'll probably try to pick it up at that price.


My other choice:

ASUS N61JQ-B2, Multimedia Notebook (Dark Brown) - Intel Core i7-740QM, 16" HD LED, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, ATI RADEON HD 5730 1GB, Blu-ray Combo Drive, 802.11bgn, Bluetooth, 2.0M Webcam, USB 3.0, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Its $1199 cdn.


But the thing is I'll be taking one of these to school almost every day. The g51 blows this one away in terms of gaming performance (and i game alot), and it has a full HD (1920x1080) screen as well as a backlit keyboard. It also has a slightly smaller screen for better portability, but its also heavier/thicker and i really really dislike the fancy lid design.
Its also $200 cheaper...

for most of you this would be a no brainer, but I'm still undecided lol.

(Also i dont really care about the blu ray drive on the n61, the usb 3.0 is nice but i can live without it).

 

If your mostly taking it to class I would pick the more portable N61 since it is lighter. I would also look into which one is louder because I hated taking my old Sager laptop because the fans seemed to always be on and could be heard from the other side of the class. I guess it really depends on what is most important to you, gaming or portablity. What games are you planning to play on it anyway?

 

Uhm ... actually, I think the N61JQ will be the one to 'blow' the g51 out of the water in terms of gaming performance.
It has a slightly faster CPU, and do correct me if I'm wrong, but both 360m and Mobility 5730 are mid-range gpu's ... of which the 5730 is a higher clocked 5650m (but otherwise a same card), and as such BETTER than 360m.

The 360m or 5730 likely won't be able to handle full HD resolution in terms of maxed out gaming easily since both are mid-range gpu's.
They would have an easier time on 1400x.... or 1600x.... resolutions instead (but it also depends on the game).

 

The 360M slaughters the 5730. It's not even close.

Yeah ... the g51 would indeed be better gaming-wise.

Either way, the 'lightness' ratio really shouldn't come into question here.
I happily pack my 2.5kg heavy laptop into the backpack and carry it around.
Hence the g51 shouldn't really be that much of a problem to lug around (at least not any-more so in contrast to other laptops (plus since your primary function will be gaming ... and it's cheaper ... go with it).

 

lol you better line up RIGHT NOW in front of the store cuz there's only 10 available.

The last NCIX sale there was 3 G73's available for 999.99 and people lined up 6PM the day before... And the store opens at 9 AM the next day.

Both of these cards will not handle Full-HD resolution and games will look crappy if you go to 1280x720 but out of these I'd go with the G51.

Well NCIX also had the G51 for 999.99 during their doorcrasher in Scarborough, didn't go THAT quick.. but I got there at starting time and I got into the store 2 hours later. Basically everything was gone.

 

I'd go for the g51 because of the better gpu. Also, I've always found the lid to be ugly, untill i've seen it in real life. It doesn't look as bad as the pictures online suggest.

Okay if you got there at 7AM it should be okay... As the G51 isn't THAT hot.

If you leave at 7 and is from Toronto then I don't think so.

Check the RFD posts, a lot of people complained about a single family lined up early and grabbing all the good stuff and then all the people behind them get nothing.

 

yeah i saw the rfd posts, but also looking at the st.catherines thread, it seems that there wasn't really a lineup until 8am at the least.
I'll probably leave around 6 am then from TO, takes around an hour to drive down there, so should get there around 7-7:15 ish.

Yeah if you get there 3 hours before opening good chance you'll snag one.

yup, got there around 7:20, there were about 10 people ahead of me. I think i was the first one there who wanted the laptop cause everyone else there was there for the monitors and other deals.

I would prefer N61JQ because I heard that he G51 gets a lot of blue screen issues and overheating.
