Can others post their response on this?
In short I have tried two different Optimus based cards 335 & 520 and they both displayed the same issue in Max (2012 and 2011). Which is this.
(THIS EFFECTS DX MODE ONLY)
Normal rotation speed, even on simple items, "pop" around on screen. If I go super slow, the rotation is fine.
I met up with a Nvidia Rep, and after looking at my settings, he agreed it was an issue on the card. But explained that the engineers see these programs as more for their Quadro line. I explained for game developers on the go, there is NO reason for us to use a Quadro. We are not doing CAD/CAM versus attempting to show end results that should look the same on a customers computer. While also working with game engines which the Quadro is NOT optimized for.
Anyhow he said he would try to get them to raise the priority of Max compatibility. They have not released any newer drivers since the version I showed him on (280.26) beyond beta ones that are made specifically for newer games.
However, I think its even a larger issue than he knows. There is some kind of interaction with the Optimus and Intel that actually will overheat my 520 to the point of it crashing (not the system but card) if I use DX mode. OpenGL will run at least 10 degrees cooler (thats without shaders in either mode with simple objects). If I use an external monitor (with a higher resolution) with the Nvidia running it solely, I do not have this issue. I believe only the newer Optimus cards can run an external monitor fully? Which backs the idea that its software. Some kind of interaction with Max, integrated intel and the nvidia GPU not working nicely.
Anyhow it seems it has some pretty bad unoptimization. Enough to turn off customers if they realize they cannot work with Max and DX shaders without being forced to purchase a Quadro. I tried their feedback email/bugs without response before. I'm seeing how many of us are out there and maybe, juuuuust maybe. There is someone at Nvidia reading these forums who can get this issue resolved once and for all.
If OpenGL works fine, why don't I use that instead? DirectX shaders. Which for game development is necessary to get a closer sense of the final product before engine import.

OpenGL is way slow in 3dsMax compared to DX.
The word on the street, read this as Graphic forums is that Nvidia is bricking their Geforce line to prop up the Quadro line. Many users are trying AMD/ATI due to that.
Be warned to not get a Llano AMD/ATI if you need OpenGL because on that it was the AMD/ATI that put the OpenGL running only in the economic card.
Did you tried older drivers? -
Yes, non of the Optimus work. And if they are purposely mucking their drivers on the Geforce to force the unnecessary purchase of a Quadro.. then all the more reason to go to ATI. So tired of people dissing ATI for content creation based on their previous experiences before the HD lineup.
Optimus and 3D Studio Max users. (Direct X)
