Does anyone else have a problem with Optimus switching to dedicated video with MSI Afterburner running?

I configured MSI to run on integrated through nVidia control panel, but it still switched to dedicated. The only way I can get it to run integrated is to go to task manager and end MSI Afterburner.

MSI afterburner is also a monitoring tool, it'll look for dGPU everytime it's launched even it's set to run on the integrated GPU. Monitoring the dGPU also counts as using the dGPU.

Hmmm. Ok thanks. I did not know that.

If I forget to turn Msi on, what fan profile will the GPU run by default?

MSI laptops should also have their own EC stored on the BIOS level which adjust the fan speed according to the temperature reported by the dGPU/CPU (As the later MSI laptops usually only come with 1 fan shared by dGPU/CPU).

So this is something hard coded into BIOS and isn't configurable?

I have not used the MSI 1762 before so I'm not sure. But usually not configurable by the user except Turbo mode.

I haven't seen anything in the BIOS for it so I guess so. I'll run it with the fan profile disabled (Afterburner) and see what temps I get.

    Thanks

The 16F3 and 1762 can be flashed with a custom BIOS to config the fanspeed (read it somewhere in the MSi section)

I am using 306.62 Modded from Lv2GO and running on automatic optimus config. Running Afterburner doesn't switch to dGPU unless running an exe that's configured to use the dGPU.

What driver version are you currently running?

Strange, I have the same driver and afterburner is config'd to run IGP (HD3000).

No switching problems at this end.

Try Kingpinzero's driver install tutorial maybe?

I had the same problem with stock drivers. I don't think it was the install process.

BTW I just tried this method. Same result. I have to manually turn off Afterburner to disable dGPU

Set your desired speed, enable set clocks at startup, then make sure in the options that it's not set to start with windows.

Now every time you restart afterburner will set your clock and close meaning your dGPU is not active.

Thanks Meaker. I primarily use Afterburner for fan control and FPS/temp monitoring though. Not really for over-clocking. Any other suggestions?

Is the fan not set when you save the profile to launch on start up?

For monitoring there's no other ways, any sort of GPU monitoring tools that relates to the dGPU will cause the dGPU to always be on. However if you launch GPU-Z and select Intel HD4000 as the GPU to monitor it won't use the dGPU, but kinda pointless to monitor just the iGPU. Well you just cannot monitor the dGPU without using the dGPU.

For FPS monitoring you can use Fraps, however for temperature monitoring the only way is to have the dGPU to stay always on.

I'll just have to disable startup with windows and try to remember to turn it on/off before and after playing games.

Quick fix. I created a batch file to run the game .exe file along with Msi afterburner. Converted them all from .bat to .exe. Created a shortcut to the new .exe file, changed icon with actual
game icon then pinned to task bar. Also created a .exe file to kill afterburner and rivatuner afterwards.

My quick fix was just to not use afterburner :p I don't generally overclock on laptops anyways.

Interesting, did you use bat to exe converter to pack the .bat into .exe?

This is kinda off topic, but is it possible to control the MSI barebones (16F3/1762) fanspeed using afterburner?

I don't use it for overclocking, I use it to monitor temps, fps, fan profile and to capture screenshots and video.

yes I did. Works pretty well.

Yes. You can setup profiles to run specific percentage at specific temps. I'm not sure how accurate the speeds are though with the 1762.

no offense but having to turn msi afterburner on everytime i want to run a game is slightly annoying.

the fact even having msi afterburner open causes my computer to be in permenant "turbo mode" is dumb. there has to be a way to overclock when running games only.
