I bought the Orange box, I know, not so new, but HL is a great game.
Anyway, because Steam needs to update every time I run the game (which by the way, takes some time), I just cannot play without being connected.
I just can't believe this, I payed for this but I cannot play it anytime I want.
Anyway, does anybody know a way to make this run without steam, or at least without being connected to Internet?
Thanks.

why not just set steam to run in off line mode.....
-
I thought you needed to have a connection also, but that is initially, and probably after a prolonged period of time, but like bwh just said, use off-line mode,...
-
There are Steam updates about every 10 days or so, but if you want to play without an internet connection, it will just start in offline mode and you can play.
No problem here... -

Like others stated run Steam in offline mode and every thing should be cool, I think if you go a really long time without logging online and just playing in offline mode eventually Steam will prompt you to log in (had it do this to me once after not logging in or playing for at least a month) but its not a big deal and it may have just been a fluke on my comp.

How do you set it to work ofline? I was checking the options and I don't see any check box for that.
-
Click "File"->"Go Offline"
-
Haha I just downloaded steam last night. Useful info.
-
You shouldn't even need to do anything. If there is no internet connection Steam will automatically load into offline mode.
-
Steam will prompt you to switch to Offline Mode when it cant detect an internet connection.
You will be able to play offline aslong as your credentials are saved. -
So I did it, but it doesn't work. I just updated Steam yesterday, and today on offline mode Steam says:
This operation cannot be completed when Steam is in offline mode. I press Ok, and the game does not start.
Please help. -
I've had this same thing happen with mine. The offline mode just doesn't seem to work at all. I'm not sure if the game was intended for 100% internet connection use or not, but I personally don't know of any method around it.

Any help please?

I've never had that happen, but I'm guessing it was trying to update the game when you went into offline mode, so now it wants to get the update.
Which game are you trying to play? -
I'm trying Episode 1. I don't think it has to do with update, cause I update it yesterday. However, I don't have Steam initiating by default with windows, so may be every time it start it needs to go online at least once?

no, thats not right. you should be set to go without an internet connection. i think that if you connect to the internet and it starts downloading an update, you have to finish before you can go offline again...
check your complete percentage download on the game you are trying to play. -
Its been 100% for a while.

Launch episode one when online. Close the game and then go in offline mode.
