I have Doom Collector's Edition with all the original games and tried to install it on Vista Ultimate 32-bit, the install screen comes up, but when I click the install button it closes out and the install shield logo shows up, but then nothing happens. The Activision support site says its compatible with Vista. Any ideas? Thanks.

Old games dont work well with vista, and even worse if its x64 vista.

I would recomend getting your favorite version for a video game console and emulate it. That or dual boot with xp like I do. I have some games that wont even work with xp but only windows 98....

Well I don't believe there is a console version of the original doom games, so that wouldn't be an option. But it must be possible to get it to work since other people on the support site seem to have gotten it to work.

    Use the Doomsday source port.

    http://www.doomsdayhq.com/

I haven't tested it in Vista but it should work, and more than that, it'll look a heck of a lot better.

There is a console version of doom 2 or 3 of them actully :p

I must say I think doom64 was my favorite of them all tho. it had that classic doom feel but was good graphics, great sound (playing in the dark with my surround sound on make me jump more than once when one of those invisible demons would pop up in my face) plus it had cool hidden stuff.

Doom 3 for pc I own and didnt like that much, so I never beat it.

Ah that emulates older windows? That would work too, with a good performing notebook it should not be a problem to run a virtual windows enviroment and doom is not going to be a demanding game.

Are you all crazy go nuts?!

    STEAM IS YOUR FRIEND!

You can play any ID game including ALL of the Doom games using steam. It does all of the compatibility work for you. Works in Vista, no sweat.

EDIT: Seriously, this makes running Spear of Destiny SO much easier for me than it was before.

Now if only they'd put System Shock 1 and 2 on there. Both of those little dirtbag/wonderful games took me hours of emulator/driver/process affinity tweaking to get working manually.

Can you put your old CD key (or 1.44 floppy key ;) ) from the game you purchased 10 years ago into the Steam program and download it that way?
I thought it was possible to do that with Quake 4...

I tried that with several games. Seems that it only works with older games if they were made by Valve.

If you want older games, you'll probably need to rebuy them off of steam. Although 10$ isn't what I'd call free, at least they aren't charging 59.99 like EA would.

EA needs to burn in a fire seriously...

The dont hold your games for you like steam anymore, and charge you 7$ just to hold it for 2 years. Oh and they charge tax on digital downloads now.

Hence my warm support for Steam and NOT EA or any other digital DL service.

Does anyone know of any of Digital Distribution service that runs as smoothly as Steam? Any of them have a sense of humor or special deals like Steam? I love the 50% off deals every so often. X3 and Vampire: The Masquerade made it into my account through that route.

I just feel that this system really is the future of gaming, especially when developers feel the need to escape the clutches of modern despotic publishers.

I still sometimes like to be able to go buy a boxed game at Best Buy or Amazon, but in the end a system like Steam not only provides an easier delivery, it also secures the longevity of the product. Take DOOM, for instance. Using Steam I can have it bought, downloaded, and running within 1 minute.

With my old 1.44 floppy disks it can take almost 20 minutes getting the proper emulator downloaded and set up! And startup takes longer and is more of a decentralized chore than with Steam.

    Steam Steam Steam.
    Steam.

Then again, I do fondly remember the day I had to register on Steam when HL2 came out. It took 18 hours to get that thing decripted or whatever they did. Oh man that was a bad PR launch.

    But hey!

All is well in Steam-land these days! :D

I just have a very bad habit of losing or breaking my phisical disks so the digital download thing is great. Infact I have the 5 disk version of HL2 and lost one of the disks so I couldnt use it but steam has it for me and as far as I can tell they hold it for you for life.

Its great for when your on a different computer than normal too, you can just download it to your location and play.

Plus you would think it saves the company abit of money not having to make the phisical box/disk and not paying to ship it to a store.

Wich is why I cant figure out why EA wants to charge 50$ + 7$ + Tax for the Digtal Download of Hellgate when several retial stores will be selling it for 40$ on launch day, and I think one of them even has it for 30$ if you did a special promtion.

I luckily found out about there little scam of not holding your games for you anymore permanently before they blocked my access to battlefield 2142 and the expansion so I had to install ea downloader and download my games the other day and now I have to put them on disk and hope I dont lose it or have trouble installing it if I want to play in the future (I really like BF2 and BF2142, and now I like Hellgate London.. its a shame these games are under EA..)

There's been plenty of stability problems with Steam

    Huh?

Of course, do any of them ban your account for playing your game in the wrong region like Steam? You forgot that in your little sales pitch.

Right until the day Steam servers go down.
Games bought the old way can be played literally forever.
Games bought on Steam? You're screwed if Valve goes out of business or Steam gets taken down. Or they just decide to drop support for older games.

I'd like to hear them. I currently have my HL disks collecting dust because I can't get authenticated via Steam. (new email address and Steam doesn't recognize the login info.) I've tried contacting them but no replies yet. IMHO Steam is about the worst thing that could have happened to gaming. I'm not saying EA is any better but c'mon, it just pisses me off that I have to check in and be authenticated to play a game on my own system that I paid good money for.

    Oh ho ho.

    I like this one. :D

Anyway. I'm comparing Steam to other Digital Distribution services. I never said it was perfect (see mention of 18 hour decryption fiasco on launch), but I did say it was the best Digital Distribution Service online.

So did you have a competitor you were going to mention or do you just hate intangible entities like Steam?

By the way, love the avatar.

I remember being frustrated when steam first came out. Got it with HL2 and on 56k that took an age to decrypt or whatever.
Now though I love it. Keeps everything up to date, can buy games easily and just recently I bought a steam game second hand really cheap. I'm guessing someone out there thought they could trade in the game for a new one but keep it in their account through steam. Got in touch with Valve and had the serial key transferred over to my account. Probably wondering where their game went, hehe :)
