Your notebook could possibly burn up.

You don't need "specific" drivers. Just make sure whatever overclocking program you use is compatible with your version.

As far as abnormalities. It's a multi-part answer I REALLY don't feel like typing out several pages. Just check your program---some have built in corruption testing. Learn about temperature monitoring. There are whole forums devoted to overclocking. Go to a few and read their stickies.

Monitor tempatures, run a stress test, look for "artifacting", but most importantly, use the search button to figure this all out. :)

One way is to use ATITools and use the Search of Artifacts function. You can find more info in the link in my signature, as well as a small analysis and what to expect.

    I hope this can help.

Didn't think the 8400 GT came with DDR3 (thought just DDR2), or was that a typo?

The 8400m GT can come w/GDDR3...

    ------------------------------------------------------

About burning your laptop... if you're OC'ing only the GPU, you should look for artifacts and monitor your temps all the time whenever you're gaming.

In my opinion the HWMonitor is the best program for it, cause it keeps record of the lowest and highest temps and is very precise... Despite of that, anything beyound 100 ºC is reallyyyy bad... specially for a Gef 8400m...

If you're OC'ing you CPU as well, you should pay attention to unespected shut downs and/or windows restarts!! Cause usually that's what happens a little bit before you fry your CPU...

Also keep track of the CPU temps... for a Core 2 Duo anything over 85 ºC is definitely not desirable, specially if you use to keep your laptop running under these high temperatures for too long...

Watch yout temps. If they are in a good range and you step the speeds up a bit at a time, you shouldn't have a problem feeling out your cards limitations.

Paranoia about blowing things up from overclocking is based on ignorance. Heat and voltage kill hardware and you can easily avoid both, while getting added performace and maintaining stability. Just be smart about it.

I cant seem to overclock with 174.31 or 169.09 or 174.51 using RivaTuner 2.08 . The sliders just reset back on default. Anyone know how to fix this?

Ok, my last question is. I know that the cooler works. Im just concerned about my laptop now. It has 4 rubber grips that elevate the laptop about 1 inch above the cooling system. Is this the problem? Does the laptop have to come in direct touch with the cooler?

Aslong as it blows air into the laptop.

Direct contact probably wont be efficient. It will just block the fans, you want the cool breeze to hit your laptop. Mines only about 1cm and i can feel the air comming out of the sides after it has gone through the laptops surface

You should check first that the laptop is plugged, it will not let you change them. Also, when you say that 'The sliders just reset back on default', you mean that after restarting the computer or just after moving them?

    I hope it can help.

yes definately plugged in with no battery.

when you change the clock speeds and hit apply its fine, but when you click OK to close the window you can see the sliders reset back. Its not just me thats having this problem.

starting to give up with this oc thing.. ive tried nearly tried everything

You have to uninstall display, drivers, all NVIDIA files.

Try http://www.ccleaner.com after doing this and delete all files. Check registary and delete remains.

    Run Driver Sweeper.

    Repeat Ccleaner.

Then install Rivatuner compatible Driver. Be sure to check "inf" files and remove any device that is not related to your notebook make.

I did run Drivesweeper and Ccleaner, on safe mode aswell. As for modifying .inf file i dont think this is necessary. Other people seem to be able to OC with no problems.

Also my 3dmark06 score is only 1092 which is quite low for a 8400m GS

I had some problems with the inf and went into it and removed some other inf folders for other notebooks. I left the Lenovo inf.

    Mine worked after that.
