    Hi,

I've been experimenting with RivaTuner which I downloaded the other day and I never realized overclocking was so easy and effective! My stock 3dmark05 was 3200 with 400 core / 500 memory although RivaTuner says 432(?) /499 on the actually graph. After upping it to 504/630 I managed 3850 3dmark05 and then 540/702 = 4014! Thats roughly eqv or even above a stock x1600 isn't it? Is it that easy to boost your system! It's like I have the best of both worlds, portability, battery life and now nearly some decent gaming potential :p

I've downloaded Notebook Hardware Control and am monitoring my GPU temp aswell through RivaTuner. Stock it was running at 79deg max on 3dmark05 and for the 540/702 it hit 88deg. I was playing for CoD2 for an hour with a slightly lower overclock with a good 20% increase in fps without any problems. My Cpu temps never hit above 55deg I don't think.

Questions I suppose are your comments on what sort of damage i'm doing to the gpu etc. 88deg seems high but i heard some Asus laptops run gpu's stock at over 90deg? Is it dangerous pushing it till artefact's appear (what ever they look like!)? I mean I only plan to have the laptop for say 12-18months before I imagine i'll want a new one and harddrives normally fail way before other components, even overclocked gpu's right? Can I underclock it to save battery life on long journeys?

I don't have a warranty by the way so theres nothing to lose there ;)

    Opinions/comments would be appreciated.

answer to your question is - by default reduce core & memory clock u can save a many power - but critical reduce the speed.

can u tell me (or upload) the program or the version that u use to overclock - because when a try to overclock by many programs - the clocks always revert back to default values when I press apply button.

and i need a overclock because the default clock is underclocked over a factory defaults
    400_400 over 400_600 see http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400M.html

With the DDR3 8400M GS in the 1400's, people have been able to overclock pretty hard. I think most people were getting to the 500+/800+ range. You'll want to check with other 1400 owners on their temperatures though. If you're already at 88c, you are probably getting close to your limits. Temperature can vary greatly between notebooks and GPU's, but anytime you get up into the 90's, you need to be a little more aware.

Those are some nice results for the more lower end of the dedicated mobile GPU units. Pretty impressive numbers you guys are managing. How does it hold up in the actual game environment, and in particular, to the 8400GT?

I am assuming 3DMark05 results? Is 1024x768 the default testing resolution?

I did some testing with my Vostro 1400 recently also. 3dmark05 with default settings. Results were:

    default 400/500 - 3221 80c max
    oc1 475/700 - 4044 87c max
    oc2 500/750 - 4281 88c max
    oc3 525/775 - 4434 89c max
    oc4 600/850 - 4984 94c max

I think I could have gone a little higher. After this I got ambitious and bumped the memory over 900 and the core up to 650 or 675 and about halfway through the benchmark it crashed.

I've been gaming at 525/725 perfectly stable and cool. Oblivion runs great at 1280x800 medium settings..smoother and more consistent than the Go7600 256mb that was in my HP dv8000t could do.

I feel like the little nerdy freshman here - how do you OC this? I am getting the same computer and video card you have. Is there a guide on this site where I can learn about overclocking the GPU in this computer? It seems with a stock 3Dmark score of 3200 - that getting it up by 20% could be done with almost no heat consequence (maybe 80 to 85 C).

Same thing with my desktop, I have the CPU and video card OCed by ~15-20% with absolutely no side effects. Its just free performance!

    Thanks!

Just like to report some 3dmark06 scores (Core/Memory Clock),

    400/500 - 1520
    423/555 - 1576
    449/601 - 1694
    470/638 - 1746
    500/700 - 1854
    600/750 - 2053

This was with 169.09 drivers, which IMO are the best drivers for 8400M GS. What are some other people's scores at 600/750 clocks?
