I've just got my new inspiron 1720, and have decided to start overclocking it. I have 165.01 drivers, and am running Vista 32-bit. I am able to get a STABLE 685 Core / 535 Memory overclock from the default 475/400.

What Vista 32-bit drivers are best for this card?

Also, people should post what overclock they are getting, with what notebook, and with what driver version.

i was running 542 core and 800 memory without trying too hard. its very stable at those clocks. it could go considerably further- especially the core.

    macbook pro

i had to use the 101.24 drivers to do the clocking because i am using windows xp and the 160 series drivers prevent over clocking in xp. in vista you can play with the clocks with whatever drivers you want, it seems.

yeah cmstyles is correct. the macbook pro, asus g1s/g2s, and maybe a few other notebooks have somewhat faster memory. the macbook pro is clocked at 470/635 by default. the others (i think) are 475/700.

still, i dont think my core clock will go up to 685. thats a MASSIVE increase. i can't imagine that it is safe at that clock...

Lol i was going up in about 3-5 mhz increases, looking for artifacting. I actually didnt get any artifacting up until 690 mhz. I dropped it back to 685, and played HL2 Lost coast at max settings and max res, then I also played Lost Planet (DX10) for a while. I didnt have any problems, and the card wasnt even getting that hot.

Well, I want to overclock the 8600M GT in my 1520.

Can someone guide me as to how/which program to use and what drivers are the best for Vista 32-Bit?

I have RivaTuner if that's what I need. If I need something else, please tell me.

stick with riva tuner. it is all you need. its not as simple as atitool but its much more powerful. (its not that hard either)

check out www.tweakguides.com for an explanation of overclocking i think a guide to riva tuner.

Well if you want to overclock you have to use older drivers which cause alo tof crashes and such in games. If you want to use the newest drivers they do not allow you to overclock.

above is true for windows xp only, i think.

apparently vista 160 series over clockers are abundant.

If you want to overclock in Windows XP with some newer drivers, use NGO's 158.22. I'm overclocking just fine with them.

any idea why whenever i try to go beyond 470mem clock i wil get an error which says nvlddmkm.sys has stopped responding and has recovered successfully? i'm using the 5920g clocking it at 600/470, i can up the core clock but not the mem clock any higher, this is frustrating, my tempts are al stable, just that i get that error and it goes back to 169/100, unable to be changed til i restart the comp.

Btw i'm using 158.45 and if ANYONE can provide a solution on this i'd be most grateful

I have same spec as you. What program did you use? because I can't get my OC to stick or stay. It would go back to default with ntune. Are you using atitools? ANd the driver your using is old, I believe because of the release date on that. I'm using the 158.36 because 160 will not OC . I'm hoping they make better drivers for these because they have potential.

My Asus G1s sees 80 degree temps all the time with the factory clock (500/700 I think).

G1s' in general run pretty warm, some computers are just that way. Those temps you see may be normal for your machine.

    Use rivatune.

I hear some of the 162 and 163 drivers have been giving a 5fps increase ovr stock, is this better than overclocking a 158.45?

    I just overclocked my 8600m gt from 475/400 to 555/455 on 158.45. I got a slight improvment in performance;

    3dmark 06 score (1280x1024) before overclock was 3000 and after 3300.

CSS stress test all settings on max, native resolution, filtering x4 and AA x4 before overclock 51fps and after 58fps.

Also got an increase of about 4-5 fps in dark messiah.

I would really like to overclock a little more but there was a point where my GPU reached 89 degrees C so thats it for me :( .
I might try some of the 162 divers and see if those work better.

You should really up your memory some, a lot of room there for a lot better performance.

These notebook cards are built to handle lots of heat, but mine isnt reaching near that hot. Are you on a 15" or 17"? Also, a dell?

I wasnt able to OC with any of the 160 series drivers, but GL

I've never overclocked before, so I'm a little hesitant. What would you say is a safe rate of overclocking, yet with a good power boost? I'm running an 8700M GT at the moment, and I have an external cooling device that helps a good deal as far as heat goes. I just did 625/700 and it ran nicely, but I'm unsure as to what would be too high.

well if i got my 8600M's core to 655, id assume that you should be able to safely get your 8700 to the same or a bit higher without worrying.

Im on a 15.4" Zepto Znote6624.... obviously it has crappy cooling.

Anyway I changed the clock to 535/490 and got a further improvment in performance and the temp is about the same. New 3dmark 06 score 3392.

However I discovered a problem. I selected the "apply overclocking at windows startup" option in riva tuner and whenever I restart my laptop I get the following error message in the boot up screen:

    "ERROR
0232: Extended RAM Failed At Adress Line: 22
    Press F1 To Continue"

When the laptop finally boots up the card is back at its factory clock; 475/400. I get this error message with any change I make to the card clock.
    Any ideas?

i seem to be having a little bit of trouble overclocking my 8600m gt, i have both rivatuner and ntune installed. i am running the 158.36 driver with windows vista home basic, and my gpu is currently idling at 53 degrees celcius.

    Core Clock/ROP Domain - 297 mhz
    Core Clock/shader domain - 594 mhz
    Memory Clock - 199.80 mhz

In rivatuner when it tries to find out my clocks in the overclocking area, nothing happens, and in ntune i cannot drag the sliders to overclock.

im trying to overclock because i can only play the MoH:Airborne demo at almost lowest settings :(

    i have vostro 1500, c2d 2.0ghz. 2gb ram

    thanks,
