Im trying to overclock the 8600 gt ddr2 from its default 475/950/400
Iv already tried 500/1000/420 and seem to get a max temperature of about 52C in gaming.
Im now looking for the best stats to overclock without getting this laptop too hot
    The questions are:
1)What do people clock their 8600m gt to and is there any websites with like a graph or loads of data or something
    2)Whats better to increase:memory clock,shader or core?
3)What temperatures are the limit, example 70C or what?

    Thanks for your help

52 is pretty low. Anything above 90 is pushing it, I believe.

Well first off what drivers are you using? I have almost same setup (T7500 and 250 gig hd though) and I use 169.12 which have turned out the best for me. 169.25 and .21 gave me overclocking issues and temps idle were around 50ish, whereas 169.09 gave me about 42 but some weird issues in WoW. 169.12 I can run wow well, crysis on all high settings (except shaders to med shadows on low and volumetric on low) and get around 25 FPS most of the time (dips to like 20 FPS in fights, but with motion blur turned up manually very unnoticeable, although the momtion blur may be causing this lol), and I idle at about 43, get up to about 60-62ish playing games for like 4 hours.

Edit: Oh and my clocks are now at 620/505 and it's perfect for me, got about 4590 on 3dmark06.

169.04 for me.... core can reach 625 stable and 450 stable. I run at 580/445 and idle at 46 and max out at 60 (I also use custom fan control). my in game FPS have increased by about 15%.

P.S. I've noticed that switching from 169.04 to 169.25 my temperature monitors are reading 7c cooler.

you mentioned CUSTOM FAN CONTROL? what program is that? Is it similar to NHC? I plan to OC my 8600 but I want it to adjust when I pull the AC adaptor out back to stock and back to my overclock when I have it plugged in.

    169.09 for me.
I used rivatuner for awhile, but now I'm using ntune to OC.
On stock clocks I hit 60 degrees C while playing NFS :pS.

Mind you, when I do OC (I OC pretty high) I've only ever hit 65, so 52 is really good for a temp when your under load. Just an example for when I OC, I hit 4838 3dmark06 when I run my "stable" clocks.

I'm currently using the 169.25 drivers and RivaTuner to overclock.
Have a Inspiron 1520 with a T7500 (2.2GHz) CPU, 2GB of RAM and the 8600M GT. I've clocked the 8600's core to 600Mhz and the VRAM to 450Mhz. Running Vista too.

Just ran 3dmark06 at 1440x900 (closest I can get to 1280x1024) and I got around 3600. Not too sure about temps, but its idling at around 52 degrees on my lap. After finishing 3Dmark, the temp was 58 degrees though.
At 1280x800, and I get around 4150. Also seems the temp went up to around 65 degrees while running it. Not too sure what that would equal in actual games though.

edit - overclocked a bit more (680 / 565) and I get 4850 in 3Dmark06. Not sure if that would be stable in games mind you, will try that tomorrow.

Where do you find the maximum temperature charts for nVidia. I can't seem to find it anywhere including nVidia's website.

I'm not Overclocking and still getting between 58-62 without gaming.

jack53, I'll see if I can dig them up. AFAIK they don't publicize it well (because they don't want to encourage overclocking for newbies) so it's difficult to find.

Some people are quite lucky. I can't exceed 605 GPU or 510 Mem. But that still renders about a 4500 3DMark06 score, not too bad.

I'm getting 675/1350/550 and never exceed 60c, while playing COD4 or Crysis for hours. Running 169.09 using RivaTuner. I've tried going a little higher, but it would just lock-up instantly.

Does overclocking decrease battery life for normal use (non-gaming)?

Usually not, since there are like two states for the clocks: low (normal use) and high (gaming, high intensive graphic applicatins, etc.). Normally when people mention overclock is in the high mode.

With RivaTuner there is 3D, 3D low-power (battery), and 2D. I am unable to change the 3D low-power, so the only time I'm overclocking is when the computer is plugged in and playing games.

I'm considering trying out some AS5 to see if that lowers it at all

AS5 is only good if heat is preventing you from overclocking. In most cases with a laptop it's the chip itself that can't handle the higher clocks regardless of heat.

Mine runs at about 65C full load at my O/C's

At the time I was running a pretty decent overclock.
