I've tried using various programs, but I can't seem to overclock my NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS?
HP DV9548ca
Help please and thank you soo much in advance!

Get the 169.04 drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com and overclock using either RivaTuner or AtiTool. Make sure you follow the driver installation steps and download the original driver, replace the inf with modded one, and then install through Devices window.
-
There aren't any instructions?
I downloaded the file for 169.04 and the INF file, and I ran the setup.exe, but what more do I need to do?
I'm so confused! -
There are instructions. Read the quickstart guide. www.laptopvideo2go.com

I did what it said, and I've accomplished nothing...
I downloaded the drivers, I downloaded the INF file that was next to the driver I was downloading, I replaced the INF file in the driver folder I extracted it to, and I ran setup.exe. The computer restarted and I opened ATItool and I can't overclock? -
ScifiMike12 Drinking the good stuff
And you tried the latest version of Rivatuner?
-
Oh hey what do ya' know, it works.
Thanks sooo much guys, this made me sooo f-ing happy!!!! -
Thats good to hear. Post us with the OC results.

Ohh damn it....... when I overclock the driver screws up and it restarts, then the speeds stay at something stupid like 168/100, and it WILL NOT GO ANY HIGHER, and I have to restart in order to get it working properly again.
What have I done wrong? -
Well I've since determined that after the driver screws up, the GPU stays in "standard 2D" mode (lowest settings). When I change the settings to as high as they go, the clock speeds will change, but I can't use the high performance NOR the low power 3D clock speeds.
??? -
Make sure you're adjusting the Performance 3D clocks and nothing else.
-
OOOOOoooooooooooooooo I see, it's crashing because the settings are too high.
I've done some research and I wanted to know how far the 8600M GS can go, but keep in mind, mine uses DDR2 memory.
I've read that the highest settings before it will crash is 470 MHz for the memory and 680 MHz for the core clock speed. Is it actually safe to set the core to 680 MHz? I've set it to 600 and it runs great, tempurature is fine.
Question is, how high can it go, and should I set my core to 680 MHz? -
You should increase the clocks 5-10MHz at a time and then test in order to avoid crashing/overheating/etc.
-
Oh alright, well, does that mean I can underclock my GPU (standard 2D) and save a CRAP load of my battery?
So how far can the Core Clock Speed go? think I could go for 700 MHz? -
1. I don't know, never tried it.
2. Not without insane cooling. See this for highest 8600m GT overclock. Keep in mind people are referring to the GDDR3 version when they overclock to 700MHz. -
Well right now I'm running at 675 MHz for the core clock with COD4 running, and my temp is anywhere between 70-75 degrees celsius. If it goes over 80 (which it probably will) it'll notify me.
I'm thinking about going for 700 MHz but I'm scared outta my mind.
Anyone else know about the underclocking and saving on battery life? -
Interesting. What laptop do you have?
-
I've got an HP DV9548ca.
Core 2 Duo T5450 @ 1.67 GHz
4 GB DDR2 RAM
320 GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
Decent, but nothing special.
I'm satisfied with my recent RAM upgrade, and now I'm thinking of getting a couple of those WD 320 GB HDDs totalling 640 GB of space LOL. I don't need it, it's just hard saying to myself that I ONLY have 320 GB of space lol. -
So now my final question.
How far can the 8600M GS go? I've gone to a high of 680 MHz core and 480 MHz for the memory.
I wanna get my core to 700 MHz and my memory to 500 MHz. If I do this, will my laptop turn into a pumpkin and/or explode?
