    Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone could give me any sustainable solution to overclocking my GPU? (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650)

I've heard that there's a risk of overheatage, especially when overclocking a laptop so wanted to check with you guys first..

    To summarize my questions:
What program(s) do you use to overclock your GPU and how exactly do you do it?
Is there any way of overclocking without the risk of overheating my GPU?

    EDIT:
    Problem solved!

I downgraded my catalyst drivers to 8.10 and I was then able to overclock my GPU Core to 700 from 600! I'll let my memory clock stay at 500 though, that's good enough for me.

Thanks to everyone for their help!

I bios modded mine but AMD GPU Clock Tool should work. You shouldn't have any problem with overheating as long as your temps stay under the 90s....

Ok thanks but could you guide me? I have this AMD GPU Clock Tool now but how can I see the temps and how high should I set the clocks?

Everest should give you the temps. About how high to go, it is up to you as every card behave differently. I'm currently running at 700/800 stable.

Ok, thanks but I have a problem.. As soon as I change the memory clock or the Engine it jumps right back to where it was.. For example: My Memory clock is at 495.00 at the moment, if I change it to 496.00 it just jumps back to 495.00..

    Any solutions?

When I use AMD GPU Clock Tool for my HD 2600, the memory increases in 9mhz increments and 7mhz engine (otherwise it may drop back down).

It sounds like you may have DDR2 VRAM, as DDR3 at its stock speed is usually at least 600mhz. So don't expect it to overclock much over 500mhz (522mhz is my max stable overclock). What notebook do you have?

When you overclock make sure you have 'PowerPlay' (in Catalyst Control Centre) set to 'Maximum Performance'. It looks like you had it set at 'Maxiumu Battery Life' when you used GPU-Z. You need PowerPlay set to 'Maximum Performance' or disabled to overclock.

So you definately have DDR2 VRAM. I would just focus on overclocking the GPU Core for now then (make sure you monitor the GPU temperature); 25mhz or so memory overclock isn't going to make much difference (assuming GPU-Z is correct and the memory speed goes up to 500mhz with 'Maximum Performance' - my DDR2 VRAM's stock speed is 400mhz so I have to overclock it to 500).

If you're going to keep overclocking though, I recommend using a cooling pad to compensate for the higher temperature (Zalman, NZXT, Cooler Master & Antec make decent coolers).

What version of AMD GPU Clock Tool are you using? You need the latest version (v0.9.8) for the Mobility HD 3650.

Powerplay is actually off and it still shows my GPU Clock as 297 MHz and my "memory" as 247 MHz in GPU-z.. The weird thing is that according to AMD GPU Clock Tool, the Engine clock (is that the same thing as "GPU Clock"?) is at 594 MHz and the "memory" is at 495..

    I am using 0.9.8.. :/

Yes, they are the same thing. GPU-Z is probably wrong. It is possible that your graphics driver doesn't allow overclocking, but I haven't known that to happen with ATi graphics cards. It may not help, but make sure you have the latest drivers (they should be on the support page for your laptop on Acer's site). Otherwise, the only thing I can think of trying is enabling PowerPlay and setting it to Maxium Performance (which is what I have it set to when overclocking).

Ok so now I enabled Powerplay and tried overclocking with it on.. I was able to change the engine clock (not the memory clock) and when I did, my screen went black for a second or two and when it returned to normal I got a message saying "Your graphics drivers stopped working and have now been restored" and the engine clock jumped back down again..

I've updated to the latest Catalyst drivers (08.11) through mobility modder.. Should I change the drivers?

I haven't used Mobility Modder, so I don't know how well it works.

When using GPU Clock Tool v0.7, I used to get the same error occasionally but it didn't used to happen after a fresh restart (it's never happened with v0.9.8).

Hi everyone, hopefully this thread is not too dead yet. I also have a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 in a Dell Studio 17 (1737), Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2.0Ghz, 800FSB, 2Mb cache) with 4Gb (800Mhz) RAM. I have been reading this thread and following its instructions. According to my attachment of the GPU-Z readings, Dell underclocks my DDR2 card at 450Mhz. I found that 540Mhz is stable enough not to crash, but heating concerns me as I'm not to familiar in being able to monitor it. I just want to clock it just a bit above its normal settings (ATI's, not Dell's). Also, per the AMD Clock Tool, I see changing the Memory Clock value helps, but what does editing the engine do/ should I do it? I've attached what I see in the Clock Tool. Thanks!!

Edit: Okay, I've attached another setting. Seems as when I really push it (highest setting in WoW in Dalaran City), the memory bumped up to 495Mhz and the Engine 445.50Mhz. I would think it would be safe to bump the Memory up a bit and the engine to at least 500Mhz??? I don't know, that why I'm posting, haha. Also, is there a way to make it so the video card doesn't throttle, so its at highest performance all the time to keep smooth and awesome gaming up? Powerplay is set to highest performance. Thanks again!

if the gfx card is throttling then its getting too hot, check everest while gaming, my ddr2 3650 is stock 600eng,500mem (70-80c)and my gaming max stable is 800eng,600mem (dances around 90C) but every card/laptop is different and may not get to these levels. also if powerplay is set to max performance then it should only downclock when ur not gaming so double check powerplay isnt screwing you up but disabling it and seeing if ur clocks are lowering. also make sure ur using the 8.8-8.10 drivers those seem to work well

Yeah, I think the throttling is from the not-gaming to gaming aspects. But I'm still unsure the difference from eng and mem levels, or what do set them to possibly. I am using the 8.10 driver. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!!

engine is the core clock of the card and the memory is the speed of the card's ram and you can take them to any number as long as the
    1. they arent the cards physical max
    2. they are stable and dont crash
    3. they dont cause temps to go too high ~90C +
    4. the card doesnt artifact.

you can see how high u can take the baby by using attitool to check for artifacts/instability and everest to monitor temps hope this helps...?

How would I know what the cards max is? Also, what do you mean when you say "artifact?" Is that essentially "frying?" lol. Unfortunately I got the s**t end of the stick when it comes to what version of the mobility radeon hd 3650 card that Dell choose...Any numerical suggestions? I did ATItool a little while ago, and it crashed when it got up there.

physical max is when you set clocks and then a blue screen or sumthing comes so you know your card doesnt allow to be set that high. artifacts are when you are rendering something in 3d like the artifact test in attitoo and you see little yellow things popping up on your screen which indicate that the clocks arent stable. just test with attitool and everest and keep slowly increasing the clock rates until you start getting problems. as for numbers id like to think that it should handle at least the default clocks of 600,500 that mine has

Hey, thanks for all your responses, you are a big help. Yeah, I've been pretty much doing everything you just mentioned and saw the artifacts, and have been through 2 blue screens. So far I've come up with 750-<800Mhz for the engine, and 531Mhz core (540 gets artifacts). But what does having the engine that high actually do? I don't much of a difference in FPS for the spinning box.

Oh, and if I do change the clock speed, will it still throttle back when I'm not playing games? It seems senseless to have it that high when browsing the internet, or is that something I'll manually have to do all the time?

dont use the fps in attitool has a benchmark, ignore that and use games or
3dmark. if you press set clocks in amd gpu tool then they will stick all the time so unstick them after gaming by pressing restore default clocks. if u find my post helpful u can rep me by pushing the "scales" buttom to the left under my name

i'm not ablet to oc it, atitool doesn't recognize the ati driver...
with amd gpu tool i can modify the frequencies, but i think it doesn't take really effect on gpu....i've tried 3dmark06 with freq. 660-900 but it results with 3500 points..against 3500-3700 with standard frequencies.

    i need help :)

You cannot overclock through windows with all the catalyst after the 8.10. The only way to overclock with the newer drivers is through bios modding.

Hey sorry for resurrecting an old thread but this guide helped me alot, I tried using atitool as mentioned in the mini-guide but to no avail, however this worked like a charm. My Toshiba Satellite a350 was returning 3700-3999 in 3dmark06 but after following the instructions on this thread I got=

Mobility Modded Catalyst 8.10 driver, overclocked with AMD GPU Clock tool to 810mhz engine, 603 mem as recommended in this thread, with max temp during 3dmark06 and HL2 Lost Coast Stress test 73c ($10 cooling pad used). Gained 30 fps in Lost Coast stress test. Cheers! Will try clocking higher once i've ensured stability.

I've been reading and want to overclock my HD 3650 DDR2 256MB.

When im running AMD GPU clock tool my engine is only 109.68 and memory clock is 405.00.
Anyone knows how high i can overclock it?

I dont have any clue now since all the others that were posting had over 500 Engine.

    Thanks in advance,

Those are your graphics cards IDLE speeds. This will increase during gameplay. My AMD GPU clock tool shows the same speeds at idle. These will automatically go up when the graphics card detects a graphics intensive application running. As far as i am aware, the stock frequencies for this card are around 600 engine-500 memory (check the earlier posts in this thread). People in this thread have achieved speeds of 800eng-600mem stable, however I would recommend cooling for your notebook if you are attempting these sort of speeds. As with all overclocking, increase speeds incrementally while checking temperatures using AMD gpu clock tool.

As I post in the previous message, I achieved 810eng, 603mem stable, however I have found that 750eng, 550mem is fine for games (being a laptop, I don't want to endanger the unreplaceable graphics card). Run benchmarks and extended gameplay (longer than 30 minutes) and check the maximum temperature on AMD gpu clock tool. If the max temp is over 80C, i'd reccomend downclocking slightly. However some people run their HD3650 mobilities around 90C with no probs. If you start getting blue screens or artifacts, lower your clock rates! You've gone too high. However, following the instructions in this thread you should be fine. Ensure your notebook is always well ventilated while overclocking.

    Chur.

Just try RBE - and no soft/drivers issues anymore.
But be careful with temperatures. I have also Toshiba (a300d) so i just bought undercooler and have no troubles anymore for at least 4 monthes.
