I was trying to overclock an nvidia 9300M gs in an acer laptop. (in sig)

I first used NVIDIA system tools to do this. When I apply +10MHz to the shader clock, there aren't any prompts but when I apply even +1MHz in the core clock or memory clock, a prompts comes up and says something like "The settings are invalid and will not be applied".

Then I tried RivaTuner v2.24 with no luck either. It just throws back the settings into default once I hit the OK button. What could possibly be the culprit?

I'm using 179.48 drivers from the NVIDIA site, so could that be the problem?

    Thanks.

what drivers are you using? some drivers doesn't allow overclocking.

Stated above. :D using official NVIDIA mobile 179.48 drivers, uhh yeah, I was thinking that too, so here I downloaded different drivers, thinking of testing them this night or something: DOX 182.46, DOX 185.20 and I think this is LV2G's 179.13 drivers. :D

Oh, Mr. Penguins! Heheh.. Been reading your thread about the 9200M GS, and it's a quite hilarious bit at that. :p

I've been jealous. I know you guys have DDR3, but my 9300M GS only has DDR2 and a measly <s>1641</s> 1841 3DMark 06 score, meh.

Yep, laptop's almost always plugged in. I don't think undervolting my processor is relevant to being able to OC my card, but yeah, I have mine undervolted and (although CPU temps get stuck) I reached a lowest CPU temp of 31C (!!!) in scorching-hot Philippines, while GPU is at mid-40's.

So, there. PS I also downloaded most recent 185.68 drivers from LV2G, and then I'm gonna try benchmarking unOC'd 3DMark scores first, then try to overclock if (hopefully) possible.

BTW, on a last note my default clocks are 580/400/1450 Core/Mem/Shader. Hoo. :D

    UPDATE:

Okay, so I've tried other drivers..turns out even though I changed drivers I still can't overclock the card..got a highest 3DMark of 1891 though with the 185.20 DOX..

Could it be that Acer won't specifically make you overclock your cards? If so, would there be any way to overcome this? Flashing the bios or vbios perhaps?

I've never been able to overclock my acer 6935g. Not that i tried much but all the programs don't seem to have any affect and nTune can't even install without crashing.

Kisetsu, that score is quite good seeing as my 9200m gs DDR3 nearly reaches 2k with a 2.26ghz dual core (might be downclocked to 2.1ghz) that runs cooler.

Dont be unhappy, its a good score :D

Do you really need to overclock a 64bit card? Maybe an upgrade to the 9500M/9600M Acer? It's not going to do anything...

Well, hmm yeah, but I really have this sense of fulfillment in the event that I do something right. :D haha.

Anyway, I noticed that when it is the Shader clock I raise it accepts it, I managed to raise the clock from 1450 to 1480 and got off 1927 3DMarks with it, though I am yet to test its limit. Is it safe if it's only the shader clock I raise? Would that give a performance boost? :D

By the way, data sheets indicate that the 9300M GS has a memory speed of 700MHz..mine has only 400, do you think it's based on GDDR3? or something?

I had the same problems when using NVDIA System tools to overclock my gpu. Here's the solution i used. First your comp must be on AC Power. Second , u need to have the latest official NVDIA drivers(186.03) and newest System Tools(6.05). Download and install these first. Then when you open the control pannel enable the performance part of the control pannel and go to device settings, where they will show you ur current GPU clocks. Click on the box Custom and than change ur clocks and click save to profile. Create a new one and u should have no problems...

I had issues overclocking with Acer-provided drivers, but Nvidia's notebook releases have always been problem-free.

correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt the 9300m gs using a g84 core thus part of the defective batch? either way I'm againest overclocking (maybe its because I blew up my 8400m gs by overclocking). with a card as weak as 9300m gs you will not gain much in terms of performance, thus I will not risk the increased thermal flux.

btw: sorry if my post did not contain any useful OC advice

You are indeed wrong - the 9300M GS uses the G98 core, which hasn't been connected with any graphics explosions.
The 9300M G is a rebadged 8400M GS, which uses the G86 core, which is also known for going kerboom.

I had problems overclocking whether it be the official Acer drivers or the nVidia ones..seems my notebook is OC-locked in the BIOS, since the Extensa is the budget series of Acer and the bigger variants wouldn't sell if they enabled overclocking in this laptop...radical sales tactics ftw :D

Anyway, I don't think I'd try OCing my rig anymore (and this was a thread which was just re-bumped, eh? :D) and since I seem to hang whenever I install NVIDIA System Tools (the Performance part in the NVIDIA Control Panel, maaan) I don't think I'd have enough patience doing that again. Perhaps I'd have more patience just switching out GPU's or something for that.

Although, I did manage to overclock the card when I set-up dual booting in XP..I installed 169.04 drivers and used RivaTuner but it had problems that the GPU speed wouldn't come off the 2D Performance clock levels... I.e. I have performance 3D oc'ed from 580/1450/400 to 610/1600/400 but the clocks RivaTuner records in it's graph just stays in 2D (that's 169/338/100)... soo....yeah, notebook's full of problems lol
