Read in this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209831 that it was possible to get a 3dmark06 score of above 5200 by oc the 8600, that has to be IMO a very good score for this type of card.
But what about stability? And heat?
Have any other users out there with 8600m GT card, tried to oc, and what about the results, stability and heat (problems)?????

Not all cards tolerate the amount of overclocking required to get the desired 3dmark score, if your card can't do it despite help from a notebook cooler and other external cooling devices then there's little point persisting.

Search the forums, lots of people overclock their 8600 cards with varying results depending on user.

another point is the resolution these tests were run at. the standard resolution ( the only one that comes with the free version of 3dmark06) is 1280x1024.

a lot of people test in lower resolutions with or without knowledge or simply don´t have a lcd that is capable of displaying that kind of res.

they will come up with somehow mysteriously high benchmarking scores.

unless they don´t post the link that shows their result at the homepage of 3dmark06, i would not trust to much in such highscore benchmarking posts. and neither should you.

what i´m trying to say here, of course the 8600mgt is getting quite good results by ocing. but a lot of these high scores are simply not correct when compared to tests that were run at the standard test resolution of 3dmark06.

Well I dont have this card, yet ;) (see sig), thats why I ask. I'm considering buying Dell's M1530 (love the red on) and if its possible to get that kind of score in 3dmark by oc'ing on a 15,4", it will add another 2000+ point compared to my current system. Something that will come in handy when playing current games.

I didn't see that at first, and of course you are right, it should be tested in standard resolution.

I see that the M1530 usually get a 3dmark06 score around 4400, how much, would u say, would the difference be when playing games (same resolution), going from a system that gives 3000 points in 3dmark06???

hmm, thats hard to say, since 3dmark is a synthetic benchmark. game benchmarks can give a different picture for the difference between two cards.

but if you just use 3dmark as a comparison - 3000 / 4400 = ~1.5 times the performance. that difference you will expirience. this just might be these few fps that make a game playable.

1280x800 is much different than 1280x1024 in terms of overall score.

Keep in mind the 52xx score is with the DDR3 card, which you would get in the Dell 1530. Not every 8600M GT is DDR3. In fact, most aren't.

700 core? I have doubts. A desktop 8600GT (except the pre-OCed ones) needs a volt-mod to hit 700mhz on the core. The G84M, already running at a lower voltage?

See sig for info...but I've just been messing with 3DMark06 with default settings, 550/833 scored me a 4553. I don't want to go crazy but in my sig you can see with factory clocks (475/700) I scored 3996, which is about 550 mark increase. Under load my temps are about 90C.

    Thats impressive.
Was your m1530 stable when u played CoD4 and what are your impressions of the screen? Good, bad????
I think I will go for the 1440x900 if I get one. Have 2 days to decide before my 15% off coupon expires :)

Screen seems to be good but im getting a replacement laptop because the keyboard isnt flat (?!) and the trackpad goes haywire everytime i open the screen

But overall i am very happy with it and its seems to be very happy to overclock

    @ condieboy

can you post the link to your result. whenever you finish the benchmark you get a link to your result. would be nice to have some backup/proof of your result.

can you do that, if you still have it. if not, is it possible you run another benchmark with that settings ?

    best

I got the performance in my sig in XP, but when I OC in Vista, it's not near as stable. (IN XP I was running the Crysis MP Beta for hours on end with no problems, in Vista I've had problems running Counter-Strike: Source while OC'ing, which should be more stable of a game by now).

Well, Vista is notorious for being unstable with some games and you would probably increase your performance by going back to xp.

If I get the m1530 I will probably install Xp, or maybe dual boot with xp.

Also take note that that score is at 1280x800...not the default 1280x1024...it makes a difference.

I think most of the scores for the m1530 are given in 1280x800 since early on that was the only resolution you could get.

When I run 3dmark06 in 1280x800 I get the same score as in standard resolution 1280x1024.
    There isn't that much difference.
So again, I'm impressed over how the M1530 are able to perform.
