I'm just wondering how would the two computers compare overall.

This is because I bought my P-7801u before I even heard of the MSI. Now that I look at it, they both cost $1350 but the MSI has bluetooth, blu-ray, and a 5.1 surround sound with subwoofer (wow!). It also has better specs such as a faster processor and a 2 megapixel camera as opposed to a 1.3 megapixel on the p-7801u.

I believe the GPU is more of a brand difference rather than a performance difference so it might not matter as much.

The only beef I have with the MSI is the smaller screen resolution; I actually consider WUXGA not large enough for a 17 inch screen.

It seems like it's better in every way, but I want to get real reviews from people who have one or the other (or both) to see if it's worth selling my computer (I think somebody is willing to buy mine for $1400) to get the MSI.

From what I've seen, I don't believe that the GT725-074 has Blu-ray. The HD4850 vs. 9800m GTS and P8600 vs. P8400 isn't much of an increase over the P-7801u. Plus, you may gain 5.1 stereo, but you lose WUXGA and end up with only WSXGA+. Of course, the more expensive GT725-075 overcomes these drawbacks, but it costs several hundred more. Personally, I prefer the styling of the Gateway, but the MSI would probably have better build quality. In the end, I wouldn't go through the hassle of trading for the GT725 (a Sager np5797, maybe ;) ). But, that's all my opinion. It's your call. :)

MSI are almost becoming like a next Asus..
Actually both MSI and Gateway are bargain for gaming laptops..
However MSI would be a better deal ..

I think that the GT725-075 is a much better deal than the 074. For $250 more, you get WSXGA+>WUXGA, P8600>P9500, and Blu-ray. Of course, you could always just upgrade your FX with a Blu-ray drive and better processor.

The 4850 is certainly better than the 9800m gts. It's roughly between a GT and GTX, trading blows here and there. If you want to game, I'd opt for WSXGA, so MSI has yet another win.

I second this, especially if you like gaming with AA/AF. At WUXGA, laptops are handicapped by the fact that their GPUs are significantly weaker than her desktop counter parts, add in higher res AA/AF, and your laptop wont seem to last as long without scaling.

Wow, now this is an interesting topic, I had heard about the MSI but never knew it was at such a price point.

Depending on the performance level, I might end up getting one! I guess I will go lurk over the MSI board to find some benchmarks on games, since it seems that currently, vs my G50vt, its a 3dmark score difference about 1k (9k vs 10k). I want to see how that translates to real life performance.

If the jump in performance is not that much, I guess I can just wait it out :)

Yea, I was looking into buying the MSI GT725 myself, but went with the ASUS G50Vt cause it took way longer than expected for it to arrive in Canada. The only downside of the MSI is that it can't take a 2nd hard drive. Other than that it's a killer for its price-quality-performance.

Yes, but adding another hard drive bay would increase its weight. I was pretty impressed by MSI. If i hadn't already bought my notebook, i might have looked towards MSI.

Keyboard on the MSI sucks big time compared to the one on Gateway. Also, the build quality is better on Gateway IMO.
