I haven't played the game myself, although I may in the future due to it's good reviews. Still, it seems to have a fairly shallow black-or-white morality and combat system; although the character development looks decent.
One RPG that I would recommend over Oblivion simply because it supercedes Oblivion in all the criticisms I mentioned is the Witcher (Enhanced Edition).

I think so many games back then were so fun because a lot of our friends played also. Now-a-days, it may be somewhat fun playing online, but hardly as fun as playing with people you know. No more LAN parties or dorm room networks on Coax BNC connectors so everyone in the middle has to keep their computer on. lol

I thought about something interesting, maybe everybody has a particular game which pulled them into gaming. That one magical game which set the standards and have been chasing for more for all this time.
Personally, this would be Final Fantasy VII, as stated in an earlier post. This was one of the first games, which was about the time when Final Fantasy X came out on the PS2, and it was a masterpiece, even compared to Final Fantasy X.
1. Great humour
I remember laughing at many things in the game, which was something that made it unforgettable, no other games have done this before. For example, there was this quest to infiltrate Don's castle to save Tifa, and had to disguise myself as a girl for it. The things I went through to find the parts for my disguise was so funny, for example, I had to beat this gay guy from a gym at squats to win a golden wig! It was all fun up to the point where Don actually chose me, over the two girls, to sleep with him that night.
2. Character building and Romance
All the characters had unique backgrounds and traits, especially the girls. For example, Aeris is the cute-girl type but enjoys teasing me in certain situations like when I was trying on a dress from the quest above... They did a great job of character building I really felt I knew them.
These two elements were magic, and I was really into the game. When Aeris got killed I was actually depressed, and I didn't feel like finishing the game until some years after because it felt like something was missing (no, I wasn't depressed for many years!).
3. Storyline and Battle System
The storyline was great, not something I could have anticipated and it was actually interesting.
I thought the battle system was unique, turn based and use magic, materia and summons. I loved the summons, even today it is still cool, although they could cut down on the time it takes for the attack scenes.
Immediately, you can tell that the creators of Final Fantasy VII was really into their games to create a world that comes to life on your PC. If I knew how to program I would recreate the world as a mod in a modern game like Oblivion.
Well, this was the game that got me into gaming; do you have a game which pulled you into gaming? -
Love the ending movie of the game, now if only they would announce the coming of the witcher 2.
In regards to the topic, I for one like the turn based battle environment, I mean, I do like those real time environment like that of KH, KH 2, star ocean and FF12, but there are always appeals to games with turn based battle system going on, take Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 for an instance, it was an innovative way of implementing an evolved version of turn based system.
The RTS as well as FPS genre for the PC hasn't change much, which is probably a good thing. Cod 4 & 5 are great while Tiberium Wars is not too shabby. Partial about red alert 3 though.
PC games are seriously lacking in the RPG department. While Mass Effect and Fall out 3 was highly praised, I just couldn't bring myself to like these games. For one, I simply cant fathom how i shot the guy several times in the head and it does just a few damage to the guy's life point. those two looks like an FPS or OTS shooter, but doesn't play like it at all. It's like a genre born of the inbred of FPS and a retarded RPG damage calculating mechanism.
No offense to those who like the above games, I guess I just cant adapt to the gameplay. -
You're not alone 000022.
I really enjoyed Oblivion, even though I never really got into RPG's and never cared for the fantasy scenario. So I thought Mass Effect or Fallout 3 would be much more to my liking since I'm a big Sci-Fi and anything space-based fan. But so far both have fallen short.
I bought "The Witcher" based on all the high praises and from those here at NBR, but so far it also ceases to amaze me. Part of it is I have trouble with the attack system. For some reason my timing is always off and can never get a decent attack, or maybe it's just me who expects a lot more out of hitting someone with a magical super sharp sword.
I've started up another Mass Effect game as well as The Witcher. So we'll see which one wins it over for me. I'm veering towards The Witcher because it seems so much more involved and more fun, again which surprises me because I'm not big on fantasy or medieval based games (or movies for that matter). -

Vicious - I'm with you. It seems that is the pattern more often than not these days, unfortunately. Games like Call of Duty 4 are where it's at. I love the varied scenarios but ties it all together so nicely. Even though the game was relatively short, it was fun to play, and didn't get repetitive.
Half-Life 2 was the same way. Considering the state of the global economy I hope that developers understand that they are vying for everyone's hard earned cash more now than ever and that they need some real content to sell it. -
All in all, as I've said before, The Witcher is a great game of its genre ON the PC platform, since PC gamers don't really get much RPG love. -

While it was short I think it justified the full price tag even just for 1 player, but it has a pretty good multiplayer too. Though the MP did not keep my attention as long as I thought it would.
I really liked that sniper mission. -

Although, I get your point, and it remains to be seen whether they will do this in the future. Take Dawn of War II for example, they give you half the races this time so they can charge you the price of a new game for an expansion(s) for remaining races. Great way to make money. -

Does anyone remember the game Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines? I really like the vampire genre and that was the best vampire game by far. However, the company could not finish it in time before they went bust, kind of a shame, it could have been really good.
Why don't they make a game based round werewolves or vampires? -
A lot of mods and patches for this one, which addresses a lot of the original issues !
BTW, you can't just play the demo of The Witcher and give an objective review, as the 1st part of the game you,as most games, are spent learning game controls, etc.
Still stand behind The Witcher as the best game made in the last 3 years and I believe the Devs started GOG ( Good Old Games ) where you can download older , full versions of games, DMR free and XP and Vista capable !

Also, I thought the werewolves in Underworld were a bit weird, they don't have much fur apart from the ones created by William, the original. -
I been player The Witcher Enhanced Edition. The type of gameplay is similar to Oblivion but I think has been packaged much better. At the moment the combat is not that interesting, but better than the Oblivion hit and block I suppose. So far Assassin's Creed is better with combat, and the range of finishing moves makes it more interesting.
I have only played a bit but I get the impression that I am supposed to sleep with every girl I meet? -
The combat system turns some people off but it's hard to deny that the moves look really amazing when you finally earn enough points to unlock the last combos. -

I've got one word, and one number for you: Starcraft 2.

You must have some beef with Relic if you say that their games are ridden with stability problems, just about everyone else on this forum has little but praise for the work they've produced. -
