hmmm assuming this graph is "untainted" could this so called trend just be a cause and effect of games pricing? Its really hard to say if this will be true because with every console that comes out it gets closer and closer to just being a much smaller pc. the next consoles might probably be out by then.(no i dont consider the wiiU a "next console." As was said before its just wii in HD
)
I dunno maybe people finally realize that building a gaming pc isnt as expensive as they thought. I see way too many reasons that could cause this graph to even make a guess but i sure do hope its true because anything that can cause less console ports is fantastic in my book. -

I would love a 360 and PS3 but I got neither just due to the price, and I got the Wii on sale.
Back in the day a PC was like $2k and a Nintendo was under $100
But now they are merging PC price falling, Console price climbing. So now you can have a killer PC for $1000 and your spending close to $400+ on a console.
If you already plan to buy a PC its not a full second purchase neither, you simply just need to upgrade the necessary parts for gaming or spend a bit more. -
I wanted to buy a console but i dont have a TV... I am not watching tv for more then 10 years in fact.
Another thing is that as soon as consoles got browser and internet its really close to being just a pc with different name. Things like wii however are cool consoles i pc gaming doesnt offer anything like that atm. -
I'd take it with a big pinch of salt, if I were you. Any forecast is subject to a -huge- amount of uncertainty, and that's particularly true with the video game industry.
-
Would be good but once the next gen consoles get released, that trend will soon reverse.
-
I've been saying that PCs are going to become the primary gaming platform soon. Everyone loves to put everything into one device. Phones now have cameras, flashlights, calculators, movies, music, internet, GPS, games, etc.
It makes little sense to make a device that can only do a few things. Yes, it does those few things well but there's no reason why computers can't. It'll bring everyone together, developers can focus their efforts on developing for just one system, and you can do so much more with a computer than just gaming.
What I see happening is instead of gimmicky ideas like kinect or playstation move, companies will develop USB devices and license those devices out to game makers to be used in their games. Then you would just pop in the usb and play. Whether it be a controller, a motion sensor bar, a microphone, or any other peripheral. (I had to search google for the spelling of that lmao)
I have always played games on both console and computer and I have to say, PC gaming is more entertaining and versatile. I bought a 1080p 40" visio and an xbox a few days ago. Guess what. I've spent more of my time gaming on my computer than the tv since I bought it. (like 10 hours on my computer, 1 hour on my xbox)
TL: DR
Yes, consoles will die to PCs someday soon. It just makes sense. I personally would invest in computer companies around this time. -

I think instead of consoles dying to pc's consoles will just become (watered down) pc's
Most of the functonality is already there, if they build upon it a bit more it would be a basic browsing/working computer in adition to playing games and of course they can charge $70 per game and make you buy accessories and controllers and stuff.
So for revenue if for no other reason they will never let consoles die because they make more money off you as you always have to buy new consoles and new accessories for each console etc. -
Buying new consoles and accessories and games is a hassle compared to PC games. Take a look at your collection. You can still play every single one right? Even ones you bought years and years ago. With consoles you have to get out your old console and hook it up to play older games.
We even have emulators for the older games.
I mean, yes it makes them money. I'm just saying they better have some GOOD ideas to keep up with PCs at this rate. It'll be soon if not.
Btw, this is my own opinion, not related to the graph. -

Your opinion is the same as mine, I have posted that same rant multiple times about why I prefer PC gaming to console gaming.
I can play all my pc games and use all my pc accessories but if I wanted to play all my console games I would litterally have a room full of consoles. atari, nes, snes, genisis, segacd, saturn, dreamcast, gamecube, wii. All of them with there own games, own controllers, own power supply, own video connection to the tv.
Its a terrible terrible mess, but it does not matter to the producers of consoles this is good for them because they know yoru old stuff will get sold or lost in the closet and you will buy a new console and then have to get new accessories and things all over again for the new platform. -
I never played vintage games
-
lmao, i loved the pictures in the article, and i remember when i got bf2 and was able to max it on high aweing at the graphics thinking they were soo cool. Now... bf3 compared to bf2 makes me think "WHAT THE **** was i thinking?!?!?" lol
this just made me smile and remember the good ol days, but the future seems to be bright concerning video games.
-
Hmmm, nVidia who is losing a stake in consoles? Gee no self preservatin there. At least rumors have it Microsoft and Sony are looking at AMD over nVidia or their own unique GPU architecture. I am a strong advocate for PC gaming since I've been doing it for the better part of my life, probably 30 years now (yikes). The one advantage the consoles have now is their longevity. Five and six years old now with no sign of a new console any time soon.
I just think consoles are getting long in the tooth for people now too. Graphics are looking subpar to PC's, not to mention limited to 30fps at 720p in many cases.
I own a PS3 and Xbox 360 and to be honest, I use them about a dozen hours a year each now... complete waste of money. I used my X360 for video streaming for a while until I bought a cheap $250 notebook that did what it could ten times better. Other than for my kids, I can't see investing in any future consoles.
I don't get the point of having a console like PS3 *and* X360 though. They are basically the same thing, very few unique titles. I would much rather see a service like OnLive /shudder/ take the place of consoles, with some improvements of course. At least then you'd always have up to date hardware. -
Both Wii and Xbox 360 uses AMD tech and i think i read that Sony is rather unimpressed by the GPU they have in the PS3.
Nintendo already announced that they will use AMD for the Wii U.
I will probably get the Wii U though, as its compatible with all my regular Wii controllers ect, and i do have a lot of love over the first party titles. -
I'm probably going to stick to PC games, but I don't want to sell my 360 because I want to be able to play Madden and other multiplayer games if people come over.
-
Those statistics include "social gaming".
So it includes stuff like Farmville.
The proportion of the population interested in playing Farmville is much greater then the proportion interested in playing BF3.
However PC gaming is on the rise, I think its time for a new generation of consoles to come out soon, we've definitely graphically capped the last. The only reason I don't PC game that much is gaming is just pure entertainment to me and I'm really lazy, because I'm an engineering student and I work 20 hours a week on top of that so when I game I want to just sit on a couch and play on a big screen. Other then that PC gaming is superior in most ways. Basically it would be nice if something came out now that was about 70% of the power of a good gaming PC like back in 2005 and then Console graphics and gameplay will be at pretty much the same level because of optimization. Then they can also finally upgrade to 1080p, 60FPS and PC level detail.
The thing though is that Crysis 2 sold more copies on Xbox 360 then PC, something not pointed out in the article. I don't know what that graph would look like without Farmville.
I've never bought a PC FPS and I will buy battlefield 3 for PC. Primarily because of the 64 players vs. 20 players. Right now my PC games are all strategy or games like DOTA. If the console supported 64 players then I would get it for console. -
I don't know how I could ever play a game like BF3 on console. It'd feel like I'd be playing with a missing limb or something. I can pinpoint target in a microsecond with a mouse, but a console game controller is like driving a bus around an obstacle course at 100mph. Damn near impossible and usually miss your mark.
-
That graph is flawed and compares variable PC gaming hardware to static console hardware that came out in 2005.
PC game sales are increasing most likely due to the advanced hardware the PC has over current consoles. When the next generation of consoles come out, I don't expect those figures to pan out.
Lets not forget the marketing power behind the consoles. I have yet to see a TV advertisement for a PC-ONLY game.
Another example of Nvidia marketing toward the gullible. -
MLG players in Halo seem to always hit the head.
But like I said I'm lazy and I like sofas which is the main reason I buy most games for my 360. PC FPS have better aim by far. I do however prefer platforming games on the consoles, hands down. Local multiplayer is better (obviously). I also like racing games on consoles because even though you can get a steering wheel for the PC I like the bigger screen when I use it. For FPS its just pure laziness for me TBH. For RTS I would never touch a console RTS. I also don't like third person shooters on the PC as much for example Gears of War. For some RPGs like Mass Effect I prefer the console because my TV set up gives me a more cinematic experience. For others like WoW (mmorpg) and DOTA/LOL I would prefer the PC by far.
Of course in the game known as real life, a battlefield is like trying to drive a bus around on obstacle course at 100 mph, while having only one arm and one leg and on top of all of that the bus is going to blow up if you hit a single obstacle. Plus no redos. (just a joke don't take it too seriously). -
I don't see gaming PCs ever replacing consoles for the general population for one simple reason - most people don't like to have to mess around with drivers, config files, compatability, overclocking, and whatever else it takes to make a lot of games run right. They just like to put the disc in and hit play. This is the biggest advantage consoles have over PCs, and will continue to have.
Of course, if Sony continues down their current path of being dead-set on convincing no one to buy a PS4 due to their business practices, you never know... -
Social gaming is also included in this number.
Nvidia neglects to explain that social gamers don't need a GTX 580 or even a GPU. -

Since AMD is going to be in the big 3 consoles next gen....
-
Shoot, I don't even have to get up to pop in a disk to play my favorite games, they're on steam.
Just an off the top idea, I don't understand why PCs can't use the same disk read architecture that xbox 360 does to prevent pirating. Then you wouldn't have to install, just read the disk and play. I assume this is possible considering the graphics and processing power leap from console to computer.
Drivers are for the computer in general.
Config files: I don't screw with. Settings in game, yes.
Compatability: I haven't had a game that wasn't compatible yet. Everything runs fine
Overclocking: I didn't overclock and can run most games I want on medium settings.
So I'd have to say, even though installing and getting the right FPS on games on PC is a slight hassle, it could be made easier. I still stick to my opinion that PC gaming is going to get a huge rise soon. -
Ya let's really trust Nvida (A maker of CONSOLE GPU's) and then rally people to buy PC's...win win...
-
Honestly i was xbox360 fanatic for awhile and i was one of those that thought pc gamers where weird. Now that i joined you guys about 2 years ago its been nothing but up hill
There is no comparison to playing a game on the pc.
Its just so fun and looks great.
Plus we have starcraft
Anyways, the people i know that "dont" want to pc game in the end dont want to, excuse me cant because they cant afford it.
And in todays economy its understandable i suppose, but its not all expensive just save up a bit every pay check. The difference IS night and day.
Funny story:
i bought BFBC2 for ps3 just for fun to see how it is..
It runs on low. LOL
Im serious dead low settings
On the xbox its medium.
on my pc its high
They cant and never will be able to compare it to us.
We can upgrade and have alot more maneuverability when it comes to things.
Sure they get custom ported games, but so do we?
I see no advantage to console vs pc.
PC is FAR superior in looks gaming and fun! -
Well most people have a PC already. Even a $150 video card and $50 in more RAM can make a world of difference even for an old PC. I have an old machine with Athlon64 X2 with an 8600 GT video card and it plays games reasonably well. I went from 1GB to 2GB and that improved things considerably, and even considering throwing in an HD 5770 or something.
-
Like I said; Why trust Nvidia who has stakes in BOTH platforms. Probably trying to drive PC sales as the new consoles are far away it appears...where their GPU will be used in at least one platform... -
I don't think I would say farmville is something NVIDIA can use to say they are future buyers of GTX cards, so they can't really be using farmville players in their market cap and revenue projections. -
That doesn't work for people who haven't bought a desktop since 2000 because they like laptops. -
Thats true, but those types of games are not made for keyboards.
Im talking about the general population that plays all the other games(shooters, rpg, etc) those on the pc are far better and there is no denying this, plus we have rts's -
True. But over the next few years laptops will become more and more "gaming" capable, especially on the AMD front. They IGP's in the Fusion APU's are pretty powerful already, interested to see what they come up with in the next couple of years.

Nvidia is lying when they say that Xbox is not more powerful than PC's.
I offer you the internet proof!!! -
I enjoy PC gaming, but I understand why a lot of people choose consoles instead. -
