Two days ago I recieved a letter in the mail about a class action lawsuit against Nvidia and ATi for alledge price fixing of their graphics processing units on Nvidia.com and AMD.com.
Also, a class action lawsuit has finally been filed against Nvidia concerning defective graphics processing units.

BTW, this is good and bad news for me as I am an avid Nvidia and ATi supporter. However, my 8600M GT in my laptop went out about 2 weeks ago and seeing as it is out of warranty, I was stonewalled by Asus when I tried to get a replacement. This even after I mentioned the current Nvidia defective GPU situation. So at least there is a possibility for me to get some compensation from Nvidia for my defective chip. I hope that vendors (such as Asus) wont be affected by this seeing as this was an Nvidia issue....I also hope that Nvidia is able to fix this problem for users and also maintain stability in the company. I would hate for the users to get screwed and for Nvidia to get screwed.

Well, I hear Intel's been itching to take over top-dog slot in the graphics area!

Where is 3Dfx when you need them?
...oh, right. -
Hmmm.... I hope I can get in on that class action lawsuit as well.
-
This law suit should have nothing to do with compensating consumers, just nvidia investors, no?
-
Yeah, looks like it's just for the nvidia investors. Nothing about ATi either. Would have been nice if there was a class action lawsuit representing the consumers though. Maybe if they win, we can have ours.

You guys do realize now that prices of the cards are going to rise? Not good for any of us.
-
bah, I'm buying a new smaller non-gaming laptop anyway now. I've learned my lesson.

The alleged price fixing, was'nt it supposedly done a few years ago?
It's definitely not happening now, ATI and Nvidia are in an all out war.
Both of them are fighting with Intel as well with Nvidia saying that the GPU could become the CPU of the future and Intel saying that the CPU will become the GPU of the future and then you have AMD stuck in the middle saying that both should be integrated in some sort of fusion type package with the major elements of both. -

and we should all care why... these are multi billion $ business

Empty post....

There are actually two lawsuits. The one for investors (defective units) and the one for consumers (price fixing on Nvidia.com and ATI.com). The latter is definately for consumers because of the letter I recieved in which I can join the class. -
-
I think people should take note that the lawsuit alleges a cover up.. that Nvidia knew about the defect long before admitting to it, not that that there is more defective than Nvidia will admit to. We shall see if they go there or not. It does stand to wonder that if Nvidia knew about this so long ago, perhaps only some are affected. Perhaps they solved the problem when they realized it, which would account for their claim of just some being defective. Maybe the reason they hadn't come forward and addressed allocations of all the G86 and G84 cores being defective because explaining why not all of them were problematic would be admitting to addressing the problem far before it was announced and thus leaving them open to this lawsuit.

Im not saying theres about to be one, but its undeniable that Nvidia is soon to be between a rock and hard place. -
looks like you can join a class action lawsuit .... if you invested in nvidia common stock between november 2007 and july 2008.

the bashing is going to start now...
//
edit
you can find the complaint against nvidia here :
http://www.lawssb.com/docs/NVDA_Complaint.pdf
not only nvidia as a company is accused of securities fraud, but also the CEO Jen-Hsun Huang and CFO Marvin Burket. they are said to have had knowledge about the issue since november 2007. -
All I know is my cards are fine, and as long as they start competing again Ill be happy. Right now Im getting tired of new card generations just being die shrunk and not really the performance upgrade a new generation should be. In my eyes the 9 and 3 series for ATI and Nvidia should be 2 and 8 series with 50 added to the end. Whatever happend to the 7950s or the 1950s or the 7800 to 7900 or 1800 to 1900 days where a series had these improvements and everyone knew it wasnt worth a generation upgrade. But then again that's just my .02cents and sorry to get off topic.

Sigh...
Class-action lawsuits are profit-making schemes for lawyer firms.
They make millions as their cut for "representing" and each person in the lawsuit can claim their $4 provided their file the proper 400-pages of laywerese paperwork.
Meanwhile coprorate execs see a slight ding in their "3rd yacht fund" and raise prices so the consumers pay MUCH more than $4 on their next card.
Not that the concept is wrong, but the result will probably not be what you are looking for. -
-
Is the 9500 affected? I heard it's the same as a 8600 and since the g86 core is affected i'm a bit worrying about my card
-
-
a class action law suite isnt really beneficial for us consumers. Unless nvidia will replace all defective gpu with their new 9 series which i doubt will happen. The only thing we can expect is declining nvidia stock and a hard time for them to bounce back up.
I just want this to put some pressure on the company and make them fly right. ATI needs a competitor, otherwise would we have all the great cards we get from them? Without the 8800m gtx we would have the reviled hd 4870! -
And you are right the two lawsuits arent related. This makes things even worse for Nvidia.
BTW, no one ask me to scan the letter. The reason should be obvious. Some of you should be getting the letters soon enough anyway. -
-
Maybe ATi will come out with the Radeon 1 gpu. The final gpu to ever be made. It is a cpu/gpu/memory/hdd/bluetooth,wireless-z/gps/particle accelerator all in one. Too bad gas will cost just as much as one by then...

Anyone care to spec the specs if you know what I mean?
