Are there any 1080P titles out currently for it. Does any one that has one think 1080P is necessary or is 720P more than enough? Also do the HDMI cables really make the picture look better or will components do fine?

Well if you can afford it go 1080p. It's got over twice the resolution. I'm not sure if there are any 1080p games right now, but I know Gran Turismo 5 will be.

There's like a basketball game and a tennis game that is true 1080. Everything else has a lower resolution like 720.

1080P certainly is nice, but the best-looking titles on PS3 right now are "only" 720P. Look at Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune for examples.

Here's a list of 1080P titles. Nothing really oustanding there yet, but I have both LocoRoco: CocoReccho & Super Stardust HD and they do look very sharp in 1080P (albeit far less detailed than any of their true 3d counterparts like HS or Drake).

PFFF... PS3 all the way baby!!!

Get the orange box... even if its only like 720p or 1080i... 5 games... the best... all in one box... come on...

    :)

And I think that there are def. more games than we listed here... why doesnt someone go to the store and look ? lol

only the elite xbox comes with HDMI cable... why not just buy the PS3 then?

Xbox is really twisting my mind... why buy xbox? Just to play online? I mean.. you pay for the console, the game you internet and over that you pay for the live service? !??!?! What in the world?

And the xbox gets old real fast... I mean... ps3 has optional OS instal and programs... power... my god... I really dont know....

A game that says "supports 1080" doesn't mean it runs 1080. Normally, they're 720 upscaled by the machine. True 1080 games are few and far between.

Why buy a 360? For one thing the 360 has more games than PS3 that´s a very good reason and this won´t change anytime soon. The so called power you speak of where is it? The 360 can output as good looking games as the PS3 and it is first now the PS3 has two good looking games, Uncharted and GT5.

The PS3 has no more power than the 360 has, we could put it this way PS3 have the better CPU but the 360 has the better GPU, ATI Unified Shaders -----> RSX (modified 7800GTX). Now I´m more a Nvidia fan but here MS did the right thing. They have a very good GPU in their machine and that shows. ATI´s Xenon performs better than the RSX.

Ok... but then again... why buy a 360 for those games?

I walked through Best Buy and probably saw a couple games I wanted... When walking through the PS3 games (far less) I wanted many more...

And I hate the size of the xbox360 controler... And oncemore... why buy the console? the game? Pay for your internet? and over that pay for xbox live?

Anyways... I have played both and imo the only games I really thought where good on xbox where Bioshock MAss Effect and... uhm... I forgot...

Seriously when playing the 360 I notice how the graphics really arent that good... you can still notice the cheats they use to make it look better... the PS3 on the other hand is more like PC...

But the $349 Xbox360 Premium (which has backwards compatibility I might add) comes with component ;) Let's not forget that all Xbox360s are VGA capable too. And for some odd reason (you can google this) the VGA output of the Xbox360 provides better image quality than the HDMI out of both the Xbox360 and PS3.

The heads of SCEA have come out and said that PSN won't always be totally free. Plus, you get what you pay for. I'd rather pay for a quality service and experience than deal with a crappy free service.

Power? What power? The Cell is a joke. One PPC core at 3.2GHz with 7 SPEs (one disabled for redundancy, i.e. they're defective) and one of those SPEs is dedicated to the XMB. You basically have a single core PowerPC G5 with a bunch of co-processors tacked on. What a load of crap. The only reason Folding@Home appears to be so fast on the PS3 compared to PCs is that most people running F@H on their PC are doing so on their old P2s and P3 systems from the late 90s they no longer use. Put the Cell up against a Core 2 Duo or even the triple core PPC G5 at 3.2GHz in the Xbox360 and that PS3 is suddenly going to seem incredibly slow. If you want to see for yourself, check out google. Look for benchmarks from when the first Core Duo MacBook Pros and iMacs were appearing. They ran circles around the multi-core PowerPC G5-based PowerMacs. with UB applications. That Core Duo in your HP notebook will even give the Cell a run for its money in a real world situation.

Who really cares about the "optional OS install"? You can only install PPC-based Linux distros, which are basically dying now thanks to Apple switching from that god awful platform to Intel. Sony purposely keeps Linux gimped on the PS3 so you can't do anything other than basic media playback, and your run of the mill applications. So whats the point? You want to run FireFox on your HDTV? You want to use Gimp or OpenOffice on your HDTV? That's silly. Espicially when you consider the Playstation3's memory constraints. 256MB of main system memory and 256MB of video memory. Running a modern OS on 256MB of memory? hah. Yeah if you only have it and one other application open. The PS3's media capabilities are better than that you get in Linux anyway, so theres no point in even installing it. But when it comes to that, the Xbox360 is better. Easier streaming setup, especially with Windows PCs, better codec support, you can play your own music during games.. Not to mention the Xbox360 has on-demand HD movie and TV show downloads. Thanks to the Xbox360, you still get high def movies without having to pick sides in the format war or pay extra for a feature you won't use.

Well, thats your opinion. The average gamer feels otherwise, which is why the Xbox360 is outselling the PS3. I see nothing besides Ratchet that I want on the PS3. Lair? Don't make me laugh. Heavenly Sword? Sorry, I don't like lame hack 'n slash games that are over in a couple of hours. Gran Turismo 5? Sorry, I graduated from bumper cars. Final Fantasy? Everything after FF9 has been terrible. MGS? I haven't cared for MGS since MGS2 had cut scenes every 2 minutes.

The Xbox360 controller is basically perfect. And this is coming from someone who loved the Dual Shock 2 on the PS2!

And, once again, Sony has said that PSN won't always be completely free. We already know they're going to make "Home" micro-transaction hell, so theres no reason to not believe them when they say they are thinking about charging for gaming in the future.

What good game is on the PS3? Ratchet. That is it. What else is there? Nothing. What does the Xbox360 have? Well, I'd certainly take Forza, Halo 3, Gears of War, PGR, and the crapload of others over the PS3 any day. Not to mention a working and playable version of The Orange Box. Don't blame EA for that either. Theres only so much you can do with a crap processor and small amounts of broken up memory.

And the most important game of this generation, Grand Theft Auto 4, has been confirmed by the developer to be better on the Xbox360 as well as it having additional content.

When I play the PS3, especially games like Lair, I notice how the frame-rates are horrible, theres glitches and v-sync issues, and the graphics really just don't even look as good as they do on the Xbox360 or PS3.

Actually the most saddest part is to look where I live, if you go into a store to buy games then look at all the 360 games that is there compared to the corner where the few PS3 games are.

I wonder if PS3 will ever catch up, then I mean by sales and number of people owning it. For now it is still way too over priced.

Until it plays Flashpoint Elite, there's no point in me buying another one.

Free does not equal crappy. Just look at how awesome Linux is.

    Mine isn't defective. :p

No... F@H goes quicker on my PS3 than my MacBook.

I do! My PS3 is my home media server. Stuck a couple of external hard drives into it and feeds all the PCs in my house.

How exactly to they 'Gimp' Linux?

    Yes.

    Yes again.

There is nothing silly about Gentoo being awesome. It runs fine with 256MB of ram. I just don't game in Linux.

What if you don't have a Windows PC? I ditched them months ago.

I was a fan of the phat Xbox controller. I prefer it over the Sixaxis and 360 controls.

Whereas I could say I hated Halo 3 and Gears, thought PGR pales compared to GT5 Prologue. Games are a purely subjective argument. I happened to prefer the PS3's selection.

Just because the box says it, it doesn't mean that is the resolution of the game. Most games are rendered at 720p (or less) and then upscaled.

Your CoD4 only runs at 1024x600. Which is 307200 pixels less than 720p, and 1459200 pixels less than 1080p.

Not too mean it doesn't look amazing of course. But just be careful with what you read on the back of the box.

Linux is pretty crappy. I'm sorry, but until I don't have to go to the command-line to get my OS up and running with everything I want to do, like play MP3s and watch DVDs, then it's "crappy". Plus they need to get some real artists to design the UIs. You can tell that just about every aspect of the various UIs were designed by programming teams using GIMP.

Proof? Are you running F@H at FULL speed, like it does on the PS3 or just letting it use idle CPU time?

Every knowledgeable person and every benchmark out there shows the Core series handing the PPC line their butts on a platter.

You'd be much better off with a PC for that. Obviously you have your PS3 hooked up to an HDTV or TV of some sort. A PC with a GeForce 8 will have hardware support for every video codec you throw at it. Which means you get hardware acceleration and features like deblocking for H.264 video, as well as DVDs and VC-1/WMV.

Memory constraints as well as the fact that Sony doesn't allow access to the "RSX".

On 256MB of RAM? Yeah. Not even XP runs good on 256MB of RAM.

Sorry, but no modern operating system can run good on 256MB of memory. Leopard and Vista can't even run that good on 1GB of memory. XP and Linux generally need at least 512MB, unless you're using one of the "lighter" distros.

I was all for "ditching" Windows PCs a few months. But after owning a Mac for nearly 10 months (well, I had about a month off thanks to Apple killing my system that needed repaired) and using various "flavors" of Linux (god I hate that phrase), I realized that you just can't do as much with OS X or Linux as you can with Windows, and the combination of Mac/Linux + PS3 is far less capable than the combination of Windows + Xbox360.

    Oh yeah?

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/840/840505p3.html

    Heres a quote:

    And:

Would you like me to post more links to reviews that talk about the frame-rate problems?

Sorry, but MGS is a snooze fest. All you do is take a few steps, watch a cut scene that lasts at least 3x longer than the steps you just took, then wash, rinse, repeat throughout the entire game. It's way too boring. The first game was okay, but the second game overdid it.

The "GTA3 Trilogy" sold around 40 million copies. Each one sold well over 10 million. I'd say that GTA is more important than any other game out there.

By the way, your last comment about the "rumors" being "quashed" literally made me laugh out loud. You really need to keep up on your news: http://arstechnica.com/journals/thu...eft-auto-iv-content-for-only-xbox-360-in-2009

Those two games you mentioned that run natively at 1080p are Virtua Tennis 3 and NBA 2K8.

And to those arguing which console is better. STFU and just buy both, unless you can't afford it. Learn how to respect a person's wants and likes. Each one to his own as they say.

    @ narsail

Why go HDMI when you can go component + optical with a digital 5.1 surround system like a Z-5500? My friend's got the same setup with his PS3 and Xbox 360 and it's just awesome. And HDMI does lose quality when the cable is longer, right? It might not be true for all HDMI cables though, especially the expensive ones.

@ symphony, im just on a budget and would not like to spend more then i have to , so if i can get a cheap crappy HDMI cable ill be happy with wht ever audio i get, thnks for the suggestion tho.

My PS3 arrived just with standard definition AV cables. I bought a $10 HDMI to DVI converter to plug the PS3 into my PC monitor, and enjoy 720p through that. I still have the AV cables plugged in to supply the sound output.

I use a generic brand cable, and have had zero problems with my setup.

Component cables support 720p/1080i. It's still HD resolution, just analog. To me, the only reason HDMI is nice is because you have both video and audio cables in one cable instead, and it's digital. But I don't see the difference in video quality between digital (over HDMI) and analog (over component).
