Im recieving my m15x very soon (Specs in Sig) and I know there must be several other users who use PSCX2 on NBR, I wanted to ask if the emulator is optimized to be used with core i7's? since each core speed is 1.73Ghz; I've read that the CPU doesnt always turbo boost for better performance and stays at the normal core speed, so its always recommended for dual-cores that have a 2.0Ghz+ Core speed to start with. I've also read that, CPU matters more than GPU in PSCX2 so thats why im asking all these questions![]()
I'm planning to play Kingdom Hearts I and II on my new laptop.
-
Technically, its best on Dual Cores since their code is optimized for it. But the i7-740QM is not only good for PCSX2, its also good for future proofing since its a quad. And yes you can play KH1 & 2 with those specs.

I am not very far into Kingdom Hearts but on my laptop (in sig) that has the mobile i7 820qm quadcore, I get a steady 60 fps. From the resource manager I can see that PCSX2 is using 2 Cores and another Core appears to be dedicated to the background processes of the Operating System although that is only using a small amount. -
I don't think pcsx2 is really cpu bound anymore, the latest plugins really put a graphics card to good use.
-
i was just searching around and i found a few posts online where people have said they used small hacks of some sort to use all cores and/or have the game utilize the CPU to run at higher core speeds for smoother gameplay. any truth in this? anything above 30+ FPS is fine with me
60 FPS would be AWESOME, i came from a 64MB GPU which played okay most of the time with some stuttering, on a Core2Duo 1.73Ghz
-
I had no idea there had been a recent release with lots of updates and optimisations. Build r3113 has been out for quite some time and I wasn't expecting anything at all!
-
let us know how it works out
I have to wait till late next week to recieve my system
so cant test anything until then
-
-
oh, thanks for that
can you please explain it abit more to me, I am kind of new to all the new Core ixxxx
never paid attention till like last month, so maybe im not following correctly, anything to help me learn would be really great. thanks

Made a thread "Multi Core processors" in Components and aftermarket upgrades.

Yes please refer to your thread:

It will help you understand you are wrong Maxiiboii.
Each core speed is running @ 1.73Ghz!!!! -
good lord how could he get it so very wrong? rehangohar77 pcsx2 will run just fine on your laptop, if you could pick a specific game/games it would help narrow down if it would properly or not.

Hmm im trying to use a ps2 emulator to play kingdom hearts 2 but im having trouble. Could somebody be nice enough to tell me how to get a ps2 emulator running? Laptop is in sig rig so should be more than powerful enough to play.

There are many guides, maybe the following will help:
PCSX2 Playstation 2 emulator - Guide -
I have a old PS2 how do I get the BIOS from it to use for PCSX2?
I'm new to this so any help would be great. -
and maybe Harry Potter 2 and 3 thats all
-
Kingdom hearts games will run just fine, just make sure you use the latest plugins that take advantage of your gpu. Not sure about the harry potter games though. Pcsx2 really only seems to struggle with fighting games, but my old gx620 could run just about everything with a 9600m gt and a 2.8ghz cpu.
-
Somehow, people are forgetting that all this business of ripping and downloading PS2 BIOS's is actually illegal...
-
oh, i didnt know that, i usually play my ps2 games off of the discs but didnt know how to play PCXS2 without the bios.
-

Is it illegal to dump the bios from your PS2 and use that?

If you own a PS2 and get the BIOS from that system I think it's OK as long as you don't get pirated games and just play the games from the discs themselves.

thanks for letting us know. learn new things everyday
im just going to edit my post mys elf -
Definitely better with a dual core. I think the quad cores run slower clockspeeds with 2 cores stressed then the dual cores do with both cores stressed.
Also depends on the game. I'd say 50% of games would be fine with an 820QM. Other games like GT4 you will need at least an i7-640M to get full framerate for time trials, no laptop CPU would cut it for a race. Some cases might need a 4.5GHz or more i5/i7 in that game!
My i5-540M will drop down to ~32 fps sometimes under time trial at Nurburgring for example with my video overclocked to the max and all the tweaks possible, running directx, hacks, etc. Even running native resolution. So really you might need a good 5GHz desktop setup in some cases. -
any game available on PC that i want to play, then ill go buy the game, but for games not available on PC like Kingdom Hearts then thats the reason i use PCXS2
like GTA4 is something I'd use with my PC so no worries there, only thing im worried about is Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and Harrpy potter 2 and 3
-
For PCSX2 alone you want the best possible dual core. That would be either the i5 580m, the i7 620m, or the i7 640m.
I personally have the i5 520m and I play most PCSX2 games max FPS with minor slowdowns. I do need a lot of speedhacks though for some games.
For PCSX2 the things you want are a lot of cache and high dual core clock speed. -
the 740QM has a 6MB cache hoping thats enough, yeah i read about the speed hacks very lightly but dont know what they are, how to use them and what would they exactly do
-
Hi anyone here has a good setting for FFX? Like I want it to run as how a normal PS2 runs not sped up / crackling music/bgm lol. I'm using PCSX2 0.9.7 (r3878) and here is my computer specs:
MSI 1722 ID2
CPU: T9600
HDD: WD Black 500GB 7200rpm
GPU: 9600m GT
Memory: 4GB PC6400 -
the i7 740qm is a pretty good processor for PCSX2 but you'd do better with the 620 or 640m most likely. I'm not sure honestly but it'll be fine.
-
lol okay, i mean I dont have a choice now that I've already got it hehe, so Ill have to do with what I've got
-
I'm sure you'll be happy with it. Use 9.7 beta for pcsx2 version. I leave almost all of the speedhacks on.
-
when i receive my laptop next week Ill make sure to PM you about that part, thanks for your reply
-
Sure think. I'd be happy to help. I'm on the PCSX2 forums quite often as well.
-
-
So you're saying no difference between i7 620m,640m,740m,720m? At least for pcsx2?
-
I have no experience with the i7 640m or the 720m. The i7 720m has a slightly lower Turbo Boost on 2 Cores though. I think, as said previously, only when you are hitting around 4Ghz Vs 3.0 Ghz do I think you will see any significant performance difference but even that I am not 100% about.
I am curious to see how well the laptops that use Desktop Processors in them perform though. -
Well thanks for letting me know =p I'm looking at new cpu's and I play loads of PS2 games. I'm thinking of getting the i7 640m as an upgrade from the i5 520m. I personally don't think having more than 4MB of cache will benefit PS2 or Dolphin (though it will benefit other programs of course)
-
i think i7-640m is a waste of money to be frank. Yes you get a high clock dual core processor but a 740qm or even 840qm is better and more future-proof.. i'm seeing a lot of stuff now being multi-threaded. CAD software , Matlab is murdering computers more and more and a quad helps.. This might not be as applicable here but i agree after reading up , 740qm is good enough.. you're better of spending the money on an SSD or something.
-
Except my mobo isn't compatible with quad cores ;D so the 640m is the highest end processor that would work.
At least... I don't think it's compatible. -
i think in the 0.9.6 version they added support for multi threading, im not sure, ill see if i can find the changelog for it. and @Hungry Man: what laptop do you have?
PSCX2 better with i5/i6 or i7?? multiple core advantage?
