ok now to answer your question...yes your laptop is still good. it should run all games at or near high settings with 1 or 2 exceptions. I just bought a 1060 laptop for 1700 and your 980m is equal to it and you have a really fast cpu..don't worry about passmark as their is always a better laptop around the corner just be happy with what you have.....happy gaming and welcome to NBR

All my temps are ok but it’s just that since the laptop is this old I’m not sure if the thermal pads could be causing this problem also I’m not even sure what kind of thermal pads to get for my system -
Yes it could be the memory..if you have tested different drivers. You could always try new thermal pads...if it's just apex then it's likely drivers if your temps are ok...worst case scenario is you might just have to under clock your memory for that one game and it will barely affect performance..if you own Crysis 1 test that game out as it will show you what most games don't that is hardware defects....if you notice nothing then your GPU is likely fine....if it crashes or shows artifacts you may be close to having a dead gpu

40 FPS but still smooth, I tried a tons of drivers for apex underclocking is the only wayJRE84 likes this. -
not crysis three but crysis one..it could be your card but crysis one will tell you whats what its generally the best method to test a card...I had intergrated graphics and it would artifact when using AA and eventually that laptop went the way of the dodo

Hey man so i got crysis one and run it very high settings no artifacts but like 4 mins in then it goes back to the desktop but heat is like 65 degrees on the gpu, do you think the thermal pads could be causing this or is it the gpu days coming to an end ?
Update I think something was corrupted I reinstalled it so far ten mins no crash I’ll keep you updated will play for a few hours .Last edited: Jun 16, 2020JRE84 likes this. -

Try 3DMark Fire Strike or Time Spy. It will be easier to find comparable numbers for those tests.
If normal games run fine, that's a good sign. As noted your laptop is dated but still fine for modern gaming.
To determine if you have thermal-related problems, run HWMonitor in the background (just get the ZIP - English version on that page) while you're playing a game for 15 minutes or so. It will record the maximum temperatures for your CPU and GPU. If you are getting > 90 degrees C on either, the laptop may be thermally throttling. (Not the end of the world; there are many things you can do to keep temps down.)

but what I’m wondering since it’s an old laptop could it be because I repaste and did not change the thermal pads if this could be causing this issue as well. I would’ve easily change them now but this damn laptop I have to strip every thing out, so that’s why I’m curious before I go ahead and do that. -
Yeah your temps are fine, I hate to tell you bad news but it really sounds like a failing card but what charles said was the next step you could also try furmark and test for stability using that but it really sounds like failing vram....are you getting arftifacts?
-
Never seen any artifacts on fur mark but I do see it have one next to power when running fur mark so maybe it’s power limiting but those options are locked off in this card can’t control anything voltage wise
Furmark Result
Duration of test : 30 mins
Temp - 69
Max Frame Rate 58
Artifact - 0Last edited: Jun 16, 2020 -

Furmark isn't a realistic test. 3DMark or actual gaming are better.
So do you have any further issues ...temps are fine and you said games run fine. It doesn't seem like there's a reason for you to tear apart your laptop again.

You might want to try one of the owner's lounge threads in our Alienware 13 /15 / 17 forum at this point, ask if anyone else has experienced this.
They would know best if the thermal pads need changing.

I still think it's worth asking in the Alienware forum.
